One day a teacher stood before his class and picked up a large empty glass bottle and filled it with rocks. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
He then added a box of pebbles (小鹅卵石) to the jar, shaking it lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. “Is the jar full now?” The students said yes.
But then he poured a bag of sand into the bottle. Once more he asked if it was full and after thinking the students said that it was.
The teacher then opened two cans of beer and poured them into the jar. The students were very excited about this demonstration (论证).
The teacher spoke again, “I want you to know that this jar represents (代表) your life. The rocks are the important things in your life—your family, your partner, your health...things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks.” “The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Play with your friends. Take time to get medical checkups. Take care of the rocks first.”
Then one student asked what the beer represented. “It just goes to prove that no matter how full your life may seem, there is always room for a can of beer.”

Many people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend too much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives. Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. When playing a sport, such as swimming, many people forget about their problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. If you want to feel happier, do something useful for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, or go shopping to buy food for the old.

3. What’s Aristotle’s opinion?

One day, when John is on his way home after school, he sees a boy riding a nice bike. John thinks it is very cool. While taking a turn, the boy falls off his bike and gets hurt (受伤). John runs to the boy quickly to help him. He takes the boy to a hospital, and then helps him to get home.
The boy’s parents learn what happened. They thank John a lot for helping their sons. As a reward (回报) for his kindness, they give John a new bike.
Be kind and always help others in need and it will come back to you.

As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.
Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream true?
Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrews tells us that making our dreams true is life’s biggest challenge (挑战).
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.
Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream.
There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from getting your dream, the book says.
You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will lead to better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.

My friends were afraid of riding the roller coaster. “I can’t do it,” said Linda. “But we all need to challenge ourselves and try something new!” I encouraged them. At last, they agreed to try the Music Roller Coaster.
When the roller coaster started moving, my friends were too nervous to open their eyes. I advised them to shout to help fight against fear. So they shouted the whole time during the ride! After getting out of the roller coaster, they said it was a nice try.
Then we tried some other roller coasters. My friends were no longer scared and were even looking forward to trying more. One of my friends even opened her eyes during the ride, and she felt totally fine. Finally, we all enjoyed these activities.
My friends said it was truly an unforgettable experience and they would have regretted it if they had missed it. I totally agree about that.
Sometimes, our fear is our biggest enemy. It may stop us from experiencing challenging but meaningful things. So I would say to everyone, “________________.” You will then discover your real power.

When our students are able to walk to the primary school 4 kilometers away on their own, they will be enrolled (加入) in higher grades.”
