A terrible fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral (巴黎圣母院), one of the world’s most famous buildings on the Seine River, in the city of Paris on Monday. The fire threw thick smoke (烟) across the capital. Fire ran through the top of the cathedral. The spire (塔尖) disappeared quickly.
Firemen cleared the area around the cathedral, which marks the very centre of the city. France 2 Television reported that the police regarded this event as an accident. People in Paris also think so.
