You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn't made until the time of the Qing Dynasty.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had not been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o'clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It had more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

The first little pig built his house with grass. It was the easiest thing to do. The second little pig built his house with wood. It was a little bit stronger than the grass house. The third little pig built his house with stones (石头). It was the strongest but took him a lot of time.
One day the wolf came and saw the first little pig in his grass house. He pushed (推) down the house and ate the first little pig.
Then the wolf came to the wood house and he pushed down that house too and ate the second little pig.
The wolf then came to the house of stones, but he could not push down the stone house. The wolf climbed up to the roof and tried to get in through the chimney (烟囱). The smart little pig lit a fire and boiled water under it. When the wolf fell down, he fell into the hot water and died (死).

15-year-old Kyle Washington writes about what he does in his free time.
I joined the National Youth Challenge (NYC) last year because I knew they went camping and sailing and taught skills like public speaking, and these were things I’d never done before. In the NYC you can do different activities to challenge(挑战)yourself and you’re always learning something. There are different levels, from beginner to advanced, run by adult volunteers called “leaders”. When you complete each level, you get a certificate(证书).
When I first joined, my leader suggested that my first challenge should be helping organize activities at a local children’s club for two hours a week. I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea, I’d joined that same club when I was eight and I’d found it really difficult to make friends. I was quite shy then and all the other children already had their own friendship groups, so I’d stopped going after a couple of weeks. I decided to take up the challenge though, but only because I wanted my first NYC certificate.
Soon, however, I wanted to spend all my free time at the children’s club. It meant a lot more to me than just getting the certificate. And when I finished the challenge, the NYC leader let me keep on volunteering at the club because I’d built up some great relationships with the children there. Now I go there for about four hours a week and I always really look forward to going.
Because of what I’ve learnt at the children’s club, I’ve decided that when I finish school in three years’ time, I want to go to college to study to become a qualified youth worker—someone who works with children. It wasn’t something I’d ever considered before starting at the club. In fact, I’d never thought about my future job, and the idea of youth work had never entered my mind. This has been my favourite part of the NYC so far and I’ve improved my communication skills while at the same time helping others. I’ve got several other NYC certificates now and—yes, one of them is for camping!

3. What was Kyle’s first challenge in the NYC?
4. Why didn’t Kyle want to take up his first challenge at first?

I AM THE PINE
“Look,” I said to my friend Mandy, holding up the bright—red paper. “There’s a five-day art camp this summer.”
Mandy took the paper and looked at it. “Tessa, you should go. You’re the artist. I am not.”
“You can learn with me.” I said in an encouraging voice. “I really didn’t want to go alone.”
Mandy smiled, “I tried, but my little brother thought the corns I painted were rockets.”
Later, I called my other friends, but none of them could go with me. Disappointed (失望的), I decided to go outside to draw the Westons’ pine tree. Drawing always made me feel better. On the way, I thought about the art camp and wished I felt a little braver. Mandy could make friends with others in 10 minutes, but I was embarrassed (尴尬的) when there were no familiar faces around me. By the time I arrived there, I had made myself believe that I was happy to give up going to the camp.
I took out my pencils and started drawing the strong trunk of the pine. Once I started, I didn’t notice the fly buzzing around me. That’s why I jumped when Mr. Weston talked behind me, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength (力量) of that tree.” “Thanks.” I smiled. Mr. Weston continued, “I’ve planted pine trees before. You have to spread out (伸展) the roots near the surface (表面) so the tree can get enough water and grow tall. If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dries up and dies. Roots grow out, not down.”
Now I noticed the roots all around the tree. I’d never realized how far a tree’s roots stretched (延伸) outward. It made me think about the art camp and my own roots. I was planting myself into one deep spot because it felt safer. If I wanted to grow, I had to start reaching out too.
That night, I made my final decision. I felt nervous but excited. “I am stretching my roots out into new earth so I can grow”, I thought. “I am the pine”.

1. Who was good at art, the writer or her friend Mandy?Writing a good story is not an easy task. What’s the secret? Mo Yan, a Nobel Prize winner in literature (文学), believes his success comes from a large number of reading.
Mo was born into a farming family in a village in Shandong Province. He grew up listening to folk stories about gods, spirits and foxes. Those stories later became the inspiration (灵感) for Mo’s writing.

Instead, he developed his own style.
