“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge's nephew.
“Bah!" said Scrooge. "Humbug(骗人的话)! ”
“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, uncle.” said his nephew.
“I do.” said Scrooge “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.”
“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don't be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” answered the uncle. "I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money. It's time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!"
“Uncle! Please don't say that!” said the nephew. “I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and acharitablehappy time. And so, Uncle Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”
Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded(鼓掌). He realized his mistake every soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.
“One more sound from you. Bob Cratchit," said Scrooge,” and you'll cerebrate Christmas by losing your job!”
“Don't be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.”
“No.” said Scrooge.
“I'm sorry you don't want to cerebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”
“Good afternoon!” said Scrooge.
“And happy New Year!” said his nephew.
“Good afternoon!” said Scrooge again.
His nephew left the room. He sopped to wish Bob a Merry Christmas. And Bob replied, “A Merry Christmas to you, too.”

The brush pen, one of the “Four Treasures of the Study”, was invented thousands of years ago. However, the oldest pen was just a stick or a piece of bamboo. It was difficult for people to write well on thin silk.
It is said that Meng Tian, a general of the Kingdom Qin, improved the pen. When Meng was leading an army to fight against the Kingdom of Chu, he had to report the situation to his king in time. But his pen was too hard and caused him much trouble, so he was thinking of ways to improve it.
One day after hunting, Meng made his way home with some wild rabbits on the horse back. Fat and heavy, one rabbit’s tail left a long trail on the ground when they moved on. Suddenly a good idea came to his mind when he saw it, “If I tie the rabbit’s hair to a stick, would it be easy to write with?”
On arriving home, he tied the rabbit’s hair to a stick and tried writing with it. But the rabbit’s hair was too smooth to write well and wasted a lot of silk. Meng was so disappointed that he threw away his “invention” into a stone hole in the yard.
However, Meng never gave up and kept trying all the time. A few rainy days later, he happened to find his “invention” fatter in a stone hole. He picked it up with hope. The brush worked beautifully on silk. It turned out that the special water had cleaned the oil from the hair. Meng succeeded at last.
Thanks to Meng, the brush pen is playing a key role in Chinese culture. Today, students are taught to use the brush pens in school. It makes their life more colorful and helps them better understand Chinese culture.

Previous studies suggested that providing people with too much information about nutrition and physical activity at once tends to be discouraging. That has led to the popularity of advising people to make changes gradually, and set smaller goals.
So the scientists divided 200 inactive participants who were aged 45 or older into four groups. One group was instructed about making diet and fitness changes at the same time, the second group was taught about diet changes first, then fitness changes four months later, the third group changed their exercise habits first and made changes in their eating habits four months later, and the final, control group was not instructed about either diet or fitness changes but about how to manage their stress.
The researchers tracked(跟踪)the groups for full year. Compared to the control group, the three intervention groups made healthy changes in their diet. Those who changed their fitness habits first significantly increased the amount of exercise they received daily compared to the other groups after four months. However,at the end of the year, the group that changed both diet and exercise at the same time was the only one that met the nationally recommended targets for both exercise and nutrition levels, while those who worked on improving their nutrition first were unable to meet the recommended levels of fitness after a year. The researchers suspect that changes to diet are easier to make than changes to physical activity.
The findings show, however, that pairing diet and exercise changes may help to overcome some of the barriers people face in adding more physical activity into their lives. If people change diet and exercise orderly, the scientists say, they may end up placing more importance on the first set of behavior changes and feel less pressured to address the second set.
1. The advice mentioned in the second paragraph seemed ________.A.popular | B.dangerous | C.scientific | D.unsatisfactory |

B.Becoming more physically active first. |

In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Some people like them and give them food and water. Other people don’t like them. They want the government and the police to stop pigs entering the city.
Animals can be dangerous when they are big enough. In Cape Town in South Africa, baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are hungry. They go into gardens and eat fruit from trees. They even go into houses and take food from cupboards and fridges! They are big and strong animals, so they can scare people. But the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Sometimes, cars and buses kill baboons in accidents. People’s food is very bad for the baboons’ teeth because it has a lot of sugar.
People in cities need animals because nature is good for our busy brains. If we want to make our city a good place for wild animals to live in, we need to make safe ways for them to travel around the city.

But in Ireland, in 1845, people depended almost solely on the potato for food. The death of one species caused a terrible famine(饥荒). Now, some scientists are worried that such a famine could happen again, but on a much wider area.
Over the centuries, farmers have discovered thousands of different species of food crops. However, you won’t find many of these species in your local supermarket. To feed the seven billion people on Earth, most farmers today are growing only species of plants and farming only species of animals that are easy to produce in large numbers.
In the Philippines, there were once thousands of varieties of rice: now fewer than 100 are grown there. In China, 90% of the wheat varieties grown just a century ago have disappeared. Scientists believe that over the past century, more than half of the world’s food varieties disappeared.
One solution to this problem is to collect and store the seeds as many different plant varieties as we can before they disappear. The idea was first suggested by Russian scientist Nikolay Vavilov. In the 1920s and 1930s, he collected around 400,000 seeds from five continents. More recently, others are continuing the work he began.
In the US state of Iowa, Diane Ott Whealy wanted to protect historic plant varieties, like the seeds her great grandfather brought to the US from Germany more than a hundred years ago. She and her husband started a place called Heritage Farm, where people can store and trade seeds.
More importantly, people at Heritage Farm don’t just store the seeds, they plant them. By doing this, they are reintroducing foods into the marketplace that haven’t been grown for years. These food species are not just special in terms of appearance or taste. They also offer farmers food solutions for the future, from the past.
1. What is this passage mainly about?A.The fact that many food species are dying out. | B.The need to protect potatoes from disappearing. |
C.The ways to increase the number of food species. | D.The ways to prevent food species from disappearing. |
A.immediately | B.only | C.rarely | D.occasionally |
A.Because people depend on certain species of food crops. |
B.Because the same deadly disease may attack crops again. |
C.Because the world’s population is larger than that in 1845. |
D.Because farmers grow the same potatoes as those in the past. |
A.The disease spread very quickly and killed many people in Ireland. |
B.Around 80 percent of the rice varieties in the Philippines have disappeared. |
C.Heritage Farm is the first place in the US for people to store and trade seeds. |
D.People have been storing seeds to save plant varieties for more than 150 years. |
