【推荐3】A giant panda from the Beijing Zoo has been saved by a transfusion（输血）of blood from two black bears. But it’s still under special care, according to the Beijing Zoo.

Yong Liang, two years old, is the first giant panda raised from birth in the zoo. Last month zoo keepers found the panda was suffering from serious anemia（贫血）, calling for urgent（紧急的）blood transfusion.

The best way, according to zoo’s experts（专家）, to save Yong Liang from anemia would have been to transfuse blood from another panda. But it was the breeding（繁殖） season for giant pandas, making such a transfusion very difficult.

But the experts found that there is a close consanguinity（血缘）between giant pandas and black bears, so they decided to try to take blood from black bears in the zoo and transfuse it to Yong Liang.

With the help of hospitals and Beijing Blood Donor Station（献血站）, they make an experiment which proved that the red blood cells（细胞）in the blood of black bears can be used.

On the afternoon of February15th the first red blood cell transfusion was given to the giant panda, from 600ml of black bear blood. Immediately the young panda started to get well again.

Most people don’t have interest in rainforests.    1    Secondly, they seem dark and dangerous. There are snakes and dangerous plants everywhere. However, Jeff Corwin is different from most people. He has been interested in rainforests since he was a child. Rainforests produce much of the air we breathe every day.    2    Since then, he has had one goal: to tell people the importance of rainforests. Besides, he is most interested in the special animals living there.    3    Many of the animals there cannot live anywhere else. The rainforest are important to these animals, and these animals are important to the rainforests, too. Rainforests are disappearing very quickly.    4    The plants and animals that used to live in these forests either die or must find a new forest to call their home. The good news is that there are a lot of people who want to save forests. The bad news is that saving rainforests is not going to be easy. It will take the efforts of many people working together.     5    He has started clubs for young people to teach ways to help protect rainforests. Jeff believes education is the best way to protect rainforests.

Why does this kind of thing happen? A Japanese scientist, Miho Nagasawa, seems to have found the answer: it has something to do with what is called “the cuddle chemical” (拥抱化合物).

In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team carried out an experiment(实验). They tested the levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact(互动) with each other.

While in the room, the humans patted(爱抚) the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs’ eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again.

The researchers found that the levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they had interacted. However, the levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that had simply looked into each other’s eyes, without much patting or talking.

The results of this study can also tell us a lot about the history of the bond(关系) between humans and dogs.

It all started tens of thousands of years ago. Wolves used to follow humans when they were hunting. Humans realized that they could use the wolves to help with the hunt, and finally, both species(物种) began to work together toward survival. Over time, the wolves and humans started to depend on each other. And they started to bond with each other. These changes are what caused some of the wolves to turn into what we now know as dogs.

This process depended a great deal on the bond that humans formed with them. And according to Nagasawa’s study, the bond was formed with the help of the cuddle chemical.
