“It’s very cold at the Dongzhi Festival. These people still work hard to clean the street. I want to do something for them.” Sun says. “I use my lucky money to buy the dumplings. There are many different kind of fillings (馅), like mutton and beef.”

I enjoy visiting Mr. Wang because he tells me exciting stories about Hong Kong in the past. He also shows me old photos. Yesterday, I visited Mr. Wang after school. I asked him how long he had lived here. This is what he told me:
“I have lived in the neighborhood since 1993. Before I moved here, I lived in a small village called Pak Mong on Lantau Island. There were many people living in the village when I was young. These years, there are only a few families left. Most families moved to the city for work. I left the village in 1993, when my son moved to this neighborhood.
Pak Mong is an old village. There are watchtowers (瞭望塔) around the village. In the old days, soldiers used to stand in the watchtowers and keep guard (站岗) . Here is a photo of my school. I went to that school a very long time ago. The school has been closed since 1985.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children. There was a time when I thought I would never have a good job.
I wasn’t a good student because I didn’t do much homework. In my final term, I started thinking about what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer.
I then found myself a job. That was to look after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live with them. I would be in their home if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work more hours one week, she’d give me more time to rest next time. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting very tired because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.
One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书) if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She asked me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience was useful and I was accepted. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work at a kindergarten.
Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a good future through hard work even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

Every year in early April, people in China visit the tombs (墓地) of their parents, grandparents and ancestors. It is Tomb-Sweeping Day, a traditional Chinese holiday to remember the dead. On this day, Chinese families will sweep their relatives’ tombs and clean the ground around them. Then, they will burn paper money and put flowers and fruit in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy these items and bring the family good luck.
However, it is not only the Chinese who remember the dead. People in other countries also have holidays to honor their ancestors.
In Japan, Obon is one of the country’s most important holidays. It is held from August 13 to 16. It also serves as a time for family reunions. During Obon, Japanese people return to their hometowns and visit their ancestors’ tombs. In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing. It usually falls in late April or early May. The name of this holiday refers to birth and happiness. Russians believe that people don’t have to feel sad for the dead because death means rebirth in another world.

In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar is called Layue. The month is full of interesting festivals and customs.
Laba Festival, which is on the 8th day of Layue, is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people begin to get ready for the Chinese New Year.
On Laba Festival, people eat hot Laba porridge. There are usually eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds, dates, and three different kinds of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but a blessing for the coming of the Chinese New Year.
Laba porridge is not the only tasty food in Layue. Laba garlic (腊八蒜) is popular in the north. People begin to soak garlic in vinegar from that day on, and eat it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year. While in the south, people like making sausages.
Another major celebration before the Spring Festival is Xiaonian. It is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. Traditionally it is an important day when people offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God who looks after the family.
Don’t forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It means sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.
