Studies show that children with hands-on (事事过问的) parents are more likely to do well in school. These parents ask teachers to challenge their children and help their children with their homework. “They also encourage their kids to try their best,” says William Sears, the author of The Successful Child: What Parents Can Do to Help Kids Turn Out Well (2002) and The Discipline Book (1995).

It is also important for parents to spend time talking with their children. Studies show that the families of successful children often have dinner together. When talking about school, they pay more attention to what a child is learning than what grade he/she has got. In this situation, children start to feel confident and happy.

Here are some of the other characteristics (特征) of children who do well in school.

Understanding

Successful children understand how other people feel, which makes them work well in a group. “These kids respect others,” says Stanley Greenspan, the author of Building Healthy Minds (1999). If a child laughs at others, a parent should say, “I want you to think about how you would feel if you were laughed in that way.”

A love of achievement

Successful children are good in many ways, such as their subjects, sports and after-school activities. “These kids look forward to challenges, because they provide chances to shine. Parents help their children taste success in one activity, so they try for success in other ways,” says William Sears.

A love of learning

“A child who gets good grades always loves learning,” says William Sears. “And parents should help children develop this love,” he says, “Their attitude (态度) is important. Parents should teach their kids to regard (认为) learning as an advantage, not a problem.”

文章大意:本文主要讲述了电子竞技事业正在蓬勃发展,变得越来越受欢迎,但同时也充满了挑战。

【推荐2】There is no doubt that e-sports is on the rise. Just like soccer, basketball and baseball, e-sports has become very popular around the world.

E-sports is short for electronic sports. But it is more than just children playing games in their bedrooms. In e-sports, teams of gamers play video games in front of big audiences and compete for millions of dollars in prizes.

According to the BBC, the total amount of prize money offered by e-sports competitions reached 0.65 billion yuan in 2016. These competitions were watched by about 320million people and are predicted (预计) to almost double their audience to nearly 600 million by 2022.

China listed e-sports as an officially recognized sport in 2003. And in 2016, the country even made it a new major (专业) for vocational (职业的) schools. This means that students may choose to study e-sports after they graduate from high school.

Big companies and traditional sports clubs have created their own e-sports teams. Famous soccer clubs like Paris Saint—Germain and Manchester City have hired (雇佣) professional e-sports gamers.

Getting paid to play computer games might sound like a dream come true. But don’t be fooled. Only top players can make a living from e-sports. And they have to put in a lot of hard work and training. 【推荐3】Writing text messages while walking is dangerous. A study says it is more dangerous than texting while driving. Researchers found that there are more injuries(伤害)to texting walkers than there are to texting drivers. Their report says walking is not as easy as we think. We must focus on(专注)many things at the same time to walk safely in a straight line. The researchers said that people forget how to walk properly, so dangerous things happen to them. They run into walls and other people. They walk into cars, fall over things in the street, and even fall into holes or downstairs.

A professor said walking is a difficult action. There are several reasons why texting makes walking dangerous. One is that people cannot see the street.
