Here comes 2023, the Year of the Rabbit! Chinese people think rabbits are clever and agile (敏捷的). There are many Chinese idioms (习语) about rabbits. For example, people often say dongruo tuotu (动若脱兔) to praise (夸奖) people for their agile moves (行动). They also say jiaotu sanku (狡兔三窟) to praise clever people. That’s because a clever rabbit always has many holes(洞). This makes it difficult for people to find it.
In Chinese culture (文化), the rabbit stands for (代表) the moon. People in the past think a rabbit lives on the moon. We call the rabbit the Jade Rabbit or the Moon Rabbit. It’s the pet of the moon goddess (仙女)—Chang’e. It makes medicine by grinding herbs (捣草药).
Why do people in the past like rabbits very much? Because rabbits can have a lot of babies in a short time. They think having more children could bring them luck and happiness.
So maybe the Year of the Rabbit can bring you some good luck, too!

White porcelain (白瓷) is a famous product of Dehua, Fujian Province and it was a key product of the Maritime Silk Road during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Dehua is known as the hometown of Chinese white porcelain. And there is a person who is very good at making white porcelain.
Chen Minghua, 56, was born in a ceramic (陶瓷) family in Dehua in 1966. She began to study the skills of making porcelain with her father at the age of fifteen. Chen said her father was very strict with her. When Chen made a piece that was not good enough, her father would break it immediately without giving any suggestion. He did that to encourage Chen to learn from experience by herself. What her father did made Chen work even harder in porcelain making.
In 1988, when she was only 22, Chen won the first and second prizes in the Fujian Ceramic New Master Competition. The success made her more confident about using her own style. During her 40-year porcelain-making career, she has tried hard to practice porcelain-making skills and develop a special but traditional style.
Now she is the director of the Minghua Ceramic Art Research Institute in Dehua and a member of the Chinese Xiamen in 2017. Chen’s excellent work was selected (选择) as the national gift for the BRICS Summit in Xiamen in 2017.
“I was very excited and I couldn’t help crying when I heard the news. But it was difficult to complete ten pieces in the required time,” she said. To achieve that, Chen went to many places to look for materials and did every part carefully by herself. Her efforts finally paid off. “I really love my job. I will never stop making the porcelain.” she added.

What does it mean to be Chinese? According to a survey, more than 40% of Chinese people believe that Chinese love their country and their families. The survey also shows about one third of the foreign people describe the Chinese as hard-working and creative(有创造力的)people.
In China, plenty of people, including scientists and workers, always work day and night for the development of China. While patriotism(爱国主义)is the spirit that bonds(联系)the nation together, family plays a big role in traditional Chinese culture, “My Chinese friends get married and have babies, and they think about their family first when they choose a job or give up one,” said Aaron Cedillo, an English teacher in a school in Beijing.
Besides, the characters(性格)of being hard-working and creative also comes to light. Sheryl Wang, a Malaysian student at Zhejiang University provided a good example of how hard-working Chinese people are. “Many Chinese don’t stop working even on weekends. It seems those men never need to rest,” A foreign university teacher has found Chinese students in the lab could always come up with new ideas. “I’m really surprised,” he said.
Over the past 70 years, China has developed rapidly to become one of the most important countries in the world. During the process, everyone has got a clear understanding of Chinese traits(特征).

Each country in the world has its own traditional clothes, which show us the country’s traditional aesthetics (美学), philosophy (哲学), and social values in special ways. Here are the four most well-known types of traditional Chinese clothing.
Hanfu
Hanfu is the oldest of China’s traditional clothes. Legend traces it back to over 4,000 years ago when Huangdi’s wife, Leizu, made cloth with silk. It was kept improving till the Han dynasty, when Hanfu was made and strongly promoted (推销) by the ruling class. It also had a far-reaching influence on neighboring Asian countries, such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
The Zhongshan suit
The Zhongshan suit, also known as the Mao suit overseas (海外地), is a type of male clothes. It was First advocated (提倡) by Sun Zhongshan in 1912, so it was called the Zhongshan suit. Later on, after Chairman Mao had been seen wearing it in public many times, this type of clothes gained another name-the Mao suit.
The Tang suit
The Tang suit often refers to a type of Chinese jacket rather than the clothing of the Tang dynasty.
This name came from the overseas Chinese. As the Tang dynasty was famous for being rich and powerful in the world, foreigners called the overseas Chinese people “the Tang people” and the clothes they wore were called “the Tang suit”, also known as Tangzhuang.
The Cheongsam
The Cheongsam(Qipao)developed from the Manchu women’s changpao of the Qing dynasty. The Manchu people were also called the Qi people by the Han people; so their changpao was named qipao.
Generally, traditional Chinese clothes had two basic forms: the top- bottom (最上面的) clothes and the one-piece clothes. The top-bottom clothes, made up of an yi (the upper garment上面的衣服) and a chang (the lower garment), were the earliest form of clothing recorded in Chinese documents. The one-piece clothing was called shenyi. The upper garment and the lower garment were sewn as one piece although they were cut separately.

What would people like to eat on their birthday? The answer would be different in different countries. In many countries, people have birthday cakes with candles. The number of candles is the person’s age. The birthday person must make a wish and blow out the candles. If he or she blows out all the candles in one go, the wish will come true. In the UK, people sometimes put a candy in a birthday cake. The child with candy is lucky.
It is getting popular to have cake on birthdays. In China, many people still eat long noodles for their birthday. They never cut up the noodles because the long noodles are a symbol of long life. In some places, people also eat eggs on their birthday. They are a symbol of life and good luck.
All of these birthday foods may be different, but the ideas are the same. They bring good luck to the birthday person.

Where does your food come from? How is it made? These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so worried that the U.S. started testing food.
These days, most food in the world is safe. The reason is laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels (标签) on food give people important information. Then they can make good choices about their food.
Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.
As we all know, food is closely related to our everyday life. We should take action to make food safer!

Where would you go if you needed to find out about the capital (首都) of Brazil (巴西)? Where would you share pictures of yourself with friends? The Internet, of course!
The Internet makes our lives more convenient (方便) than it was in the past. But along with the good comes the bad. If you think the Internet is a safe place, then think again. Like in the real world, some things might be bad on the Internet, so it’s important to learn how to stay safe online.
First, you should never give out your personal information online: your name, your address, your phone number, your birth date, etc. Check with an adult (成年人) before providing any of this information for anyone.
Second, choose email addresses and screen names carefully. Make sure they don’t reveal (透露) personal information about you. For example, don’t use your real name as your screen name! Passwords (密码) should also be nearly impossible to guess.
Third, remember the Internet can spread (传播) things around quickly. Anything you post (发布) might be seen by everyone. If you wouldn’t want a friend to see something, it’s probably something you shouldn’t post in the first place.
Finally, don’t do or say things online that you wouldn’t do or say in person. Treat others as you want to be treated—both in the real world and online. If you ever feel like you’re being cyberbullied (网络欺凌), be sure to report it to an adult!
