How much do you know about the Silk Road? It is a historically important international trade route between China and the Medier-ranean (地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years.
The ancient road started from Chang’an (now Xi’an) and ended in Eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6,500 kilometers long and went across one-fourth of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food like carrots.
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, China is trying to build the “21 st Century Marine (海洋的) Silk Road”. With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2014, the dream of One Belt One Road (the “Silk Road Economic (经济的) Belt” and “21st Century Marine Silk Road”) (“一带一路”) is coming true.

Every American, young or old, knows the phrase “to face the music” well. It′s at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?
One explanation (解释) is about the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said the expression was first used by actors. When they were asked to perform, they would say, “It′s time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did-face the band which is just below the stage (舞台).
An actor might be nervous when he moved onto the stage in front of the audience (观众). But he had to go out. So, “to face the music” came to mean having to go through something no matter how unhappy it might be, because you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. The soldiers had to face their leader′s check. They were worried about how well they looked. Were their guns clean enough to pass the check? Still, the men had to go out to face the check. What else could they do?

In fact, do you know that butterflies have four stages(阶段) of lives? They begin their lives as one thing, change into another, and then another. Finally, they change into beautiful flying insects. It's true. And it's one of the wonders of nature.
First of all, there is an egg, it's usually small and colorful. A female butterfly lays an egg first. When you look at this small egg, it's hard to believe that in a few days, it will become something completely different. In time, it changes into a new life. No longer the small egg becomes a walking insect. This insect is called a caterpillar. It now has legs, eyes, a mouth and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar eats, and eats, and eats. It can walk. It can see. But it is still not a butterfly.
Soon, after growing bigger, the caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It wraps(包裹) itself in this nice protective blanket and goes to sleep. This stage of a butterfly’s life is known as the "pupa" stage.
What happens next is truly amazing! After a short while, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Soon the wings become strong enough, and the colorful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away. After a few weeks, this adult butterfly lays her eggs, and the cycle begins all over again.
This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look around the natural world, and you will learn many truly amazing things.

They carried out the lastest Shenzhou ⅫⅠ mission. It will be the longest space journey by Chinese astronauts. Have you ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut like them? How did they get there?
Health is important. To be an astronaut, you need to be very healthy. Good eyesight, a strong heart and lungs are important. You’d better not have other small problems. For example, a decayed tooth (龋齿) could get worse space and bring trouble to astronauts. You can’t have scars (伤疤) either. They may split (裂开) in space.
Become stronger with hard training. In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut. You must fly more than 600 hours without accidents. You’ll start training when you become backup (预备的) astronaut. It’s very difficult. For example, you need to build your muscles as strong as professional athletes by running, swimming and doing pull-ups. You will also wear a 200-kilogram suit and so tasks underwater for six or seven hours without eating or going to the toilet. This is like doing tasks during a spacewalk.
Learn science. Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts take 60 courses to get ready for a mission, including math, English, spacecraft design, physics and so on. So they will know what to do when emergencies (紧急情况) happen during the mission.

A History of the World in 100 Objects, a project by BBC and the British Museum, presents a history of the world through 100 items from the British Museum’s collection.
The objects, most of which are extremely valuable, have brought enjoyment to people all over the world. Those who are lucky enough to see the items in person are able to see the glory(辉煌) of history with their own eyes.
“These signals from the past speak of whole societies rather than single events, and tell of the world for which they were made, sometimes having meanings far beyond what their original(最初的)makers meant them to have,” Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum, wrote in the project’s book I borrowed the book and read it. One item in particular stood out to me. It was a mechanical galleon(机械帆船)—a kind of clock. Its design is based on the great European ships that sailed across the sea in the 1500s. During that period of time, technology was developing at a fast pace, and owning a scientific product was fashionable. Micro-tourism refers to short-distance travel in which people drive two or three hours to a nearby destination and spend two or three days. With the pandemic prevention and control measures making long and distant trips less convenient, more and more Chinese people choose to take short trips instead. Mark Hou from Beijing is one of them. Before the pandemic, the 28-year-old preferred taking long trips abroad or leaving Beijing to see places of interest in other Chinese provinces. But the pandemic meant he had to adapt to a new travel style.
“Traveling a long distance means you should take public transportation. But that would be likely to increase the chances of infection, ” Hou said. “To stay healthy, short-distance travel is the better choice.”
After a long and tiring week at work, Hou likes to invite three or four friends and drive to Beijing’s suburbs on weekends. “In the peach blossom season, we go to the mountains with many peach trees. Walking in the mountains, we not only get the fresh air and have exercise, but also enjoy the beauty of flowers,” Hou explained. “When we feel tired, we can put up a tent to rest and have a picnic. That can ease tensions of daily life.”
To adapt to the new trend, many cities also create more opportunities for tourists. For example, in 2020, Shanghai launched a number of micro-tourism products for half-day and one-day tours, including exploring cultural heritage sites in the city experiencing rural life and going hiking. Destinations around cities, parks, campsites and resorts are offering new, specialized facilities and services for RV (房车) camping, jubensha parties, barbecues and picnics.
“With these programs, young tourists no longer look to get ‘distance’, but are willing to find new ways to experience their cities,” Feng Rao, head of Mafengwo Tourism Research Center, told People’s Daily.
Travel doesn’t mean you need to go far away to find a resting place for your heart. That’s also the mission of the micro-tourism.
