One day, Lewis decided that he wanted to be an athlete. “I want to find a sport that I’m good at,” he said.
“I will help you find one,” said his friend Kirby.
They went to the swimming pool. Lewis climbed up to the diving board (跳水板). But he ended up hitting the water with a stinging smack (啪的一声)!

With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets (毯子).
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

It was a beautiful morning and Robin came to a river with a small bridge across it. He stopped and rested. He was enjoying the sun on his face and thinking happy things when he saw a big man. He was nearly seven feet tall, with a thick, black beard and shoulders as wide as a tree. This man was on the other side of the river. He was walking with his head down and he was carrying a staff in his hand.
“Time to have some fun.” thought Robin, and he quietly ran to the middle of the bridge and waited.
“Good day!” said Robin when the big man was in front of him.
He looked up, surprised “Good day,” he replied.
Robin smiled. After a minute, the man spoke again.
“Excuse me, sir, please move out of my way.”
“No, dear sir. Please move out of my way.”
The man looked at Robin. “Get out of my way!”
Robin laughed. “But my dear sir, I was here before you!”
The man’s face turned red with anger.
“Move!” he shouted and lifted his staff. Robin lifted his staff to fight. The big man was strong and Robin was fast. But at last, Robin made a mistake. Robin’s head hurt and he fell off the bridge and fell into the river.
The man laughed. Robin looked up, and he laughed, too. He climbed out of the water and blew (吹) three times on his horn.
Suddenly, out of the trees came twenty of Robin’s men. Will Stutely arrived before the others.
“Robin,” said Will, ‘you are all wet. What happened?”
Robin pointed to the big man. “He knocked me into the river.”
“Then he is going to have a bath, too,” said Will.
“Wait!” said Robin. “Don’t hurt him. It was fun. We fought a fair fight and he won.”
Robin put a hand on the big man’s shoulder. “Don’t be angry. Come with me and have something to eat.”
Slowly, a smile spread across his face. He hit Robin on the back in a friendly way and said, “All right, I agree.”

It was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After she died, for many days, I stayed alone in her room, with a lonely and empty heart. Everything was in silence.
But one evening the silence was broken: I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little dog on the steps. He was thin and poor. I brought him inside, fed him with some fish, and then he fell asleep.
The next morning I learned that the dog’s owner had moved out, so the little dog was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the house, I tried to work out what to do with him. Taking care of something seemed like the very last thing I wanted to do. But as soon as I opened the door, he ran to me and jumped into my arms. It was clear that he didn’t want to go anywhere.
When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about him. There was no way I would leave without him. From then on, things grew easier. With him around, time seemed to pass much faster.
