The distance between ancient Rome and ancient China was about 4,000 miles by land. It was a very dangerous trip because here were terrible deserts and high mountains on the way.
For a very long history, the ancient Romans did not know who was making this wonderful cloth called silk. The Romans first discovered pieces of silk in the goods they took from some of dead people they had conquered (征服). But those people did not know where the silk was made. They only traded for the silk.
The Romans tried to find more traders as they came into villages to trade silk for other goods. But the traders did not know who made the silk, either. In fact, the trading along the Silk Road was a relay (接力) system. One trader would travel for a while, stop and trade, and return home. The next trader would continue, stop and trade, and return home. And so it went, no trader made the whole trip because the trip was too dangerous. The Silk Road shows its trade value between ancient Rome and ancient China.
The Silk Road had a lot of value (价值). As the years went by along the Silk Road that is more valuable, there were even cities built on the oases (绿洲). It was never easy to travel by land from ancient China to ancient Rome. But it was worth it. Ancient Rome traded treasure mainly for ancient China’s silk and spices. In fact, more things traveled along the Silk Road than traders and goods. Ideas traveled along the Silk Road as well. The ideas changed the world.

As usual, Mr Robinson, who is eighty years old, wakes up and find himself looking for his glasses. It has been twelve times for him to do such a thing within a week. However, he is not alone. As an increasing number of the elderly has come across the same problem: Memory Loss as a result of the aging.
Since aging is a natural part of human life, there is little that can be done to stop it. So scientists have been focusing on how to prevent sharp memories from worsening with aging, but the problem remains unsolved. Now research published in Scientific Reports suggests virtual reality might help older people remember facts and events based on specific details.
The study asked 42 healthy older adults from the San Francisco Bay Area to take part in it. Half spent a dozen hours over four weeks playing a virtual- reality game called Labyrinth: they wore headsets and walked in place, walking virtual neighborhoods while completing small tasks. The other half, in the control group, used iPad to play games that did not require thinking of details. After 15 sessions, the latter performed about the same as before on a long-term memory test. But the Labyrinth players have an improvement in memory through the VR game. A scientist Peter Wais of the University of California said the improvements helped them to be as good as the level of another group of younger adults who took the same memory tests.
Meredith Thompson, an education researcher, studies learning through VR games but was not involved in the new study. “It would be great to actually follow people over time and see what this type of game does for long-term memory.” She says, adding VR can provide greater involvement than other games. Wais’s team is now researching how long the effects would last and which part of the training have the most influence.
Daniel Simons, another expert, who was also not involved in the study, says that experiments with other games, which are said to be able to train the brain, have often failed to notice this. And he doubts if the test performance in a lab also works in real-world situations. According to Simons, it is better for the scientists to have more people taking part in the tests before it is widely used.

They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉) restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.
Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict routine(程序) for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were satisfied with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.
Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicate(复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门).
Today McDonald’s is really a household name. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $1 billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years in one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.

Every place in the United Kingdom has a name which tells a story! The names of towns and villages tell us about the history of the country.
Thousands of years ago, people called the Celts lived all over Britain. Then the Romans came. Many towns in England have names that end in “-chester” because the Romans called their towns “castra”. The Romans never got to Wales or Scotland and many towns there have Celtic names. Place names in Wales often begin with “llan” Which means “church”.
After the Romans left England, people called Anglo-Saxons arrived. Their villages often got their names from the family who lived there. Some names ended in “-ham”so Tottenham means “the village of a man called Totta”. Many Anglo-Saxon villages also ended in “-ton” (this means village too), so Upton is “a village on a hill” and Moreton means “a village by a lake”.
The Vikings came to England too, from Scandinavia. Their villages ended in “-by”, for example Kirkby comes from the words “church” and “village”. And then finally, in 1066, England became Norman. The British are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. Each person in the UK drinks around 1.9 kg of tea every year. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by the whole society. But tea doesn’t grow in Britain. Most of the tea is grown in India and China. So how did it become an important part of British culture?
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time British ships were exploring(探索)the world and found the drink by accident in China. It was not long before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available to the rich.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first, people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it tasted good with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British characteristic which can be seen as one of the symbols of Britain.
In the 1800s, tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This means drinking tea with snacks around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of the tea dropped fast as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms—shops where you could buy and drink tea—started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and socializing(社交)in these places. At the start of the 20th century, the British began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Teapots became a must in every kitchen.

The findings came from a pilot study led by scientists from Environment Agency Austria. The researchers followed eight healthy volunteers from different parts of the world. The volunteers wrote down what they ate for a week and then provided a stool sample for testing.
Scientists found nine different types of plastic in the samples, according to the study. An average (平均数) of 20 small plastic particles (颗粒) were found in every 10 grams (克) of stool. The particles measured between 50 to 500 micrometers.
“The smallest plastic particles can enter the bloodstream, the lymphatic (淋巴的) system, and may even reach the liver (肝脏),” Philipp Schwab, who took part in the research, said to The Guardian.
However, the scientists aren’t sure if the plastic is harmful to humans. They’re not sure how the plastic got in the volunteers’ bodies, either. But most of the volunteers said they drank from plastic bottles and also ate seafood that could include plastic from ocean pollution.
In fact, plastic is everywhere around us. Every year, an average of 8 million tons of plastic waste goes into the oceans, according to National Geographic. There, sunlight and waves break the plastic items down to the sizes of grains (谷物) of rice. Most of the particles stay in the ocean; others can spread into the soil and the air. Could plastic in the air fall onto food and get into the human body?
According to USA Today, 90 percent of sea salt sold globally contains plastic. And even some tap water has been found to have tiny plastic particles in it.
