The most valuable memory of my childhood is about a round table. This table was not just a piece of furniture (家具) but a symbol of reunion (团聚) and joy.
When I was little, our whole family would gather around a round table for dinner on the traditional festivals. Adults would sit and talk about their work and plans, while children would run around the table, playing hide-and-seek.
When I got a bit older, my aunt brought back her boyfriend and my grandma joyfully added another seat to the round table. It seemed a little bit more crowded, but we all felt closer to this new family member.
When I was twelve, my grandpa passed away because of cancer but when the family reunited again, his chair, his bowl and his chopsticks remained the same. Although his seat was empty, but it made us feel like that he had never left us.
We all have a table like this in our homes because it is a symbol of the reunion of our families. But as a matter of fact, in China, almost everything can be solved over a round table. The wedding ceremony between a loving couple, mourning (哀悼) for the dead, the talk between business partners can all happen on a same round table. So I start to wonder what is this round table to us.
The food on the table may change with time. The people sitting beside it may come and go. The reasons why we come together may be different, but the meaning behind it remains, year after year, the same. And that is our tolerance (包容) of different people, our willingness to learn from different culture and artistic forms, our care and love and respect for not only our family, but also for the community, our nation and even the whole world.
The round table has been a symbol of the Chinese culture. It was, it is and will always be.

Jim and Della had two things that they were both proud of. One was Jim’s gold watch from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della’s beautiful hair. It reached below knee like a waterfall.

Though we had practiced for months, I still felt kind of uneasy.
“Are you ready?” Brittanie asked with a weak smile.
“Of course I am!” I replied, trying to sound confident.
“I guess I’m kind of nervous,” she said quietly.
“Okay, so am I! But we’re on in about 30 seconds!”
As I spoke, I heard the song end and people clapping their hands. “Deep breaths”, I thought to myself, “deep breaths”. Then my dance team lined up and we got onto the stage as if we owned it. In the back of my mind, I heard my teacher say, “Confidence is everything!” as she did when we spent long hours in the studio.
We reached the center of the stage. I showed the judges my biggest smile, trying to hide my nervousness. I noticed that several of the judges wore listless expressions and one of them even seemed unhappy, which added to my discomfort on stage.
A few seconds later, when I heard our familiar song in the speakers, I forgot my nervousness. The dance started with a few simple counts and a more challenging turn followed. To my complete surprise, my turns were perfect. Even my jumps were higher than usual! Our cheerful dance made us excited. Even the judges began dancing in their seats.
The dance ended perfectly. Everyone stood up and cheered! That sense of pride was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. I left the stage with a smile, knowing that I had performed my best.
