The most valuable memory of my childhood is about a round table. This table was not just a piece of furniture (家具) but a symbol of reunion (团聚) and joy.

When I was little, our whole family would gather around a round table for dinner on the traditional festivals. Adults would sit and talk about their work and plans, while children would run around the table, playing hide-and-seek.

When I got a bit older, my aunt brought back her boyfriend and my grandma joyfully added another seat to the round table. It seemed a little bit more crowded, but we all felt closer to this new family member.

When I was twelve, my grandpa passed away because of cancer but when the family reunited again, his chair, his bowl and his chopsticks remained the same. Although his seat was empty, but it made us feel like that he had never left us.

We all have a table like this in our homes because it is a symbol of the reunion of our families. But as a matter of fact, in China, almost everything can be solved over a round table. The wedding ceremony between a loving couple, mourning (哀悼) for the dead, the talk between business partners can all happen on a same round table. So I start to wonder what is this round table to us.

The food on the table may change with time. The people sitting beside it may come and go. The reasons why we come together may be different, but the meaning behind it remains, year after year, the same. And that is our tolerance (包容) of different people, our willingness to learn from different culture and artistic forms, our care and love and respect for not only our family, but also for the community, our nation and even the whole world.

The round table has been a symbol of the Chinese culture. It was, it is and will always be.

The boy rested his head on the old man’s shoulder. “My friend didn’t play with me today. He played with the older boys and left me alone. I hate him!”

The old man hugged the boy. “I know how you feel.” he said. “In my long life I experienced anger and hatred   (仇恨) , too, because someone did bad things to me.” He touched the boy’s hair gently. “But hatred and anger make you tired. Do you know why?” The boy shook his head.

“It’s because there is a terrible fight going on inside every one of us, between two wolves, “ said the grandfather.

“Two wolves?” asked the boy. He thought two wolves fighting inside him sounded strange.

“Yes, two wolves, “said his grandfather.
