A while ago I sent out a couple of hundred letters for information on subjects that interest me. One of the questions I asked was “When you think of love, what color comes to your mind?”
One person said “money”. I didn’t know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn’t sure, so, I didn’t give it a color. Two people said love didn’t have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That’s a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color they thought of as love. This surprised me, since that is the color used most on Valentines’ Day (情人节). I guess passion doesn’t necessarily mean love. There was a tie of 4 each for white and yellow. I can understand wanting a pure love (white) or a wise and happy love (yellow). Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac (紫丁香) or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color they thought of as love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.
The most surprising answer was that 14 people picked blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have “the blues”, it is because you don’t have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can’t see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentines’ Day.
This little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Did you know not all people dream in color? Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors possible.

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be posted to his mother, who lived two hundred miles away.
As he got out of his car, he noticed a young girl standing by the road sobbing (哭泣). He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother and I don’t have enough money.” The man smiled and said, “Come with me. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She asked him to take her to a new grave (坟墓), where she placed the rose.

There is an old Chinese saying, “If someone gives you a little drop of water, you should return a spring of water.” That means if someone helps you a bit, you should remember it and thank them gratefully in return.
We should live in a world of gratitude (感恩). We should prove it with actions, not just words. We thank people who hurt us, because they teach us important things. We thank people who give us up, because we learn how to be independent. We thank people who are selfish, because we can learn the importance of being kind. Of course, we should thank people who help us. We should thank people who teach us. We should thank people who care about us.
We thank our parents because they do a lot for us. They work hard all the time in order to give their sons and daughters a better life. They cook meals for us, they do the chores for us, they always give us food and clothes, they teach us what is right and what is wrong.
We thank our teachers who give us dreams. They teach us a lot of things, but they ask for nothing from us. We are well-educated because of them.
There are a lot of people that we should be grateful to in our life. We should find a way to thank them.

Time proved that the boy’s hearing was perfect. He got on well with his classmates. But one day, he rushed home and said to his mother with tears in his eyes. “A boy, a big boy…called me a freak (怪胎).”
The boy grew up. He developed a gift, a talent for literature (文学) and music.
The boy’s father had a meeting with the family doctor. “Could anything be done?” he asked the doctor.
“I believe I could graft (移植) a pair of outer ears, if you could get them,” the doctor said.
However, two years went by, nobody wanted to offer the young man ears. Then one day the father said, “Son, someone will donate his ears to you. But it’s a secret.” The operation (手术) was a great success.
Time kept the secret, but the day did come… The young man stood with his father beside his mother’s body. Slowly, the father held out a hand and raised the thick, brown hair. To his surprise, the son found his mother had no outer ears.
“Mother said she was glad she never let her long hair be cut,” he said gently, “and nobody thought mother less beautiful, did they?”
Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what is done but not known.

Antonio Meucci was born in Florence in 1808. In the 1830s, he got into trouble with the rulers for his political views. After a period in prison, he decided to move to Cuba. There he continued working on his inventions. He discovered that sounds could travel through wires. In 1850, Meucci moved to the US, where he thought he would have more chances to develop his ideas. When his wife became ill, he developed a simple telephone system so that she could “phone” him from her bed while he was working. Around 1860, he showed his last invention, but because he didn’t speak English well, few people were interested. Then in 1870, he became ill himself and had to sell his plans to pay for doctors. However, when he got to the house, he found the windows were boarded up (封闭). Being surprised, he visited the neighbour, Mrs. Stetson and was told Aunt Sally and Uncle Tom lived in the poorhouse (济贫院).
“Uncle Tom got seriously ill and Aunt Sally was too weak to work.” Mrs. Stetson said slowly. “They needed money so they sold the house.”
Lovell was silent for a while. Then he asked in a weak voice, “who owns the house now?” “Peter Townley. All the furniture was sold too, and that almost killed Aunt Sally. She and Uncle Tom will have been married fifty years and it’s awful to have to celebrate their golden wedding (金婚) in the poorhouse.”
Lovell left after the tea and came again the next evening. “I’ve bought the house from Peter Townley,” he said to Mrs. Stetson, “▲” For the next two weeks, they visited every house where Aunt Sally’s furniture could be found. “We can’t take it, Lovell,” protested Aunt Sally.
“Don’t worry,” laughed Lovell. “I’ve got plenty of money now. It is time for me to pay back.”
“Lovell,” said Uncle Tom. “You don’t know what everything you’ve done means to Sally and me.”
