When I bought a jasmine plant, I was told it would bloom and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren’t any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda.
One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn’t help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something. Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away. In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen.
Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom.

In a big amusement park, there were some students sitting on the ground. They were listening to a speech after spending a happy morning there. At the beginning of the speech, the speaker told them a story about himself. “When I was in middle school, my teacher gave me an ‘F’ and told me to write it again,” the speaker said. “Her reason was just that it was impossible for a poor boy to make such a dream come true. I went back home and asked my father what I should do. He told me to make the decision by myself. So I decided to make no changes. My teacher can keep the ‘F’ and I’ll keep my dream.”
“And what happened?” the students asked. All of them were interested to know more about the story.
“This is what is happening now. You are listening to my speech in my dream park,” said the speaker. “I told you this story in order to make you know one thing: follow your heart, keep your dream and never let others destroy your dream.”
When the students were leaving the park, their teacher went over to the speaker. “Thank you, Mr. Black. I think my students have learned a lot from your speech. Here I have to say sorry to you. 【推荐3】As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He was surprised that these large animals were held by only a small rope(绳子) tied to their front legs. It was easy for the elephants to break away at anytime, but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and tried not to get away. “Well,” the trainer said. “When they are very young and much smaller, we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still think the rope can hold them, so they never try to break away.”
Like the elephants, many of us are sure that we can’t do something in our life, just because we didn’t do it successfully in the past.

A little river ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then she reached a desert*. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed.
“Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,’’ she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a wind can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little river answered, ‘‘That’s because a wind can fly, but I cannot.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate* into the wind, and it can take you across,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little river could not accept this idea. “The wind can carry the vapor* across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again,” said the desert. “And whether you’re a river or vapor, your nature never changes.” Hearing this, the little river went into the open arms of the wind. It carried her to the next stage of her life.

However, Scott and his partners all lost their lives on the way back. Several months after their deaths, people found Scott’s diaries that described the whole journey.
Monday January 15th, 1912 It is wonderful to think it is only 27 miles from the Pole. We should waste no time. Tuesday January 16th, 1912 The flag! The Norwegians have beaten us and arrived first at the Pole. It is a terrible disappointment, and I am very sorry for my loyal partners. Tomorrow we must march (行进) on to the Pole, and then go back home with all the speed we can manage. Wednesday January 17th, 1912 We finally arrived at the Pole. Yes, but under very different situations from those expected. We had a bad day with a strong headwind and a temperature of -22°, and my partners worked on with cold feet and hands. This is an awful and terrible place. Now for the journey home, I wonder if we can do it. Sunday January 28th, 1912 We are getting hungrier and pretty thin, but none of us are feeling tired. Though we have to carry heavy rocks, we have gone further than we expected. Friday March 16th, 1912 Titus Oates was in worse condition. He worried he would get us into more trouble and suggested we leave him behind. We wouldn’t accept that offer. Yesterday morning, there was a snowstorm. He said, “I am just going outside and it may take some time.” He went out and we have not seen him since then. We knew that he was walking to his death, and we tried to stop him. But deep down we knew it was the act of a brave man. Thursday March 29th, 1912 It’s the worst snowstorm I’ve ever seen. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it to the end, but we are getting weaker. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. |
Scott’s diaries are kept in the British Museum. The scientific data (资料) his team collected as well as the twenty kilos of rocks they carried all the way proved that at one time in the ancient past, Antarctica was covered by plants.
