It was 1:20 in the morning on July 15, 2021. I had just gone to bed after celebrating my 31st birthday. I live in Sinzig, a town in western Germany about half a mile from the banks of the Ahr River, and it had been raining heavily that week. There were flood warnings for some of the nearby areas, but not where I was.
I’d placed sandbags outside my garden door and prepared clothing on tables and the sofa just in case water would to get in. Before my friends left, they laughed at me for doing that.
Soon, I was woken up by the sound of rushing water. When I got out of the bed, I was shocked to feel cold water already up to my knees and rising fast. When I stepped into the hall, I saw the water coming from the garden door, and almost everything was rushed away. Now I had to get out fast!
With the water up to my waist (腰部), I started to wade (蹚水) to the door that leads upstairs to the rest of the house. All around me things were breaking. Finally I made it to that door and tried to pull it open, but every time I opened it a bit, it was shut by the water again. So I used a knife I found to make a gap (间隙) that was wide enough for me to pass through. Then, I rushed outside. I found the river had flooded the neighborhood and realized that if I had woken up just a few minutes later, I would have died.
This experience made me thankful and decided to live each day to its fullest. I came very close to drowning (溺水的) that day. I always remember what my mother told me: “Christian, don’t remember the day when you lost everything. Remember the day you survived (幸存).”

The first few times I saw him, I didn’t say hello back to him when he greeted me. I was lost in my own world. One Monday he asked, “ How was your weekend?” I told him about my visit to my sick, elderly mother. “The time I spend with my mother is so precious, because I know that each time could be the last.” He told me how sorry he was for my mother’s sickness. He shared how he too hard lost a parent to illness. “I understand what you are going through. My father passed away years ago. I think about him every day.” As I walked away, I realized I did not even know his name.
The following day, I asked about his name, “Gary.” After that, we talked a couple of times a week. We shared stories about our weekend, our dreams, and our families. Gary got offered a new job and moved away. It’s been years since I last spoke to him, yet it seems like just yesterday we talked. I look back at what became a friendship of sharing stories from the heart. When you say hello to a stranger you become a pebble (鹅卵石) in the pond. With each ripple (涟漪) you create, you spread love. I was getting more and more annoyed. The more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate. I couldn’t stand when I heard someone singing loudly behind me. A girl named Jenny had noticed my book in the library and she got my phone number from the librarian. She said she didn’t live far away and could bring it around for me.
I was so grateful and agreed to meet her at the store down the road. When I recognized Jenny was the girl I had shouted at for singing, I was filled with shame and apologized several times for my rude behavior.

They decided that misunderstandings and miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks? ” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today? ” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with different nods (点头)and shakes (摇头) of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.
