Life with my five-year-old autistic (自闭症的) son is always an adventure. There are times when it’s more fun than you can possibly imagine and then there are times when you feel hopeless, knowing there’s very little you can do to stop him losing his temper (脾气). You can’t help feeling a little shameful when other parents look at you as if to suggest you should be doing more to keep your child under control.

For the first time, I boarded a plane with him recently, knowing that there would be someone who knew nothing about our challenges sitting beside us for the next eight hours. Sure enough, our problems started before the plane had even taken off, as I tried to fasten my son’s seat belt and he started shouting. But far from feeling uncomfortable, the smartly dressed businessman sitting on the other side leant over with a smile and helped me with the task. The effect on my son was just like a miracle. He stopped crying immediately. He’d made a new best friend. I never got to know this man’s name or anything about him, but for the duration of the flight his charm worked wonders. Every time my son wanted to kick off, the man was able to calm him down before things got too out of hand. He even succeeded in getting my son to eat a meal.

Thanks to the kindness, patience and understanding of a man I’d never met before, we managed to get through the flight and, for once, I didn’t feel like a complete failure as a mum.

1. According to Paragraph 1, the writer’s life with her autistic son is ________.
A.never full of shameB.usually full of pleasure
C.sometimes full of hopeD.always full of uncertainties
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The man calmed the boy down by asking him to eat a meal.
B.The boy always feels hopeless and makes his mum feel angry.
C.The boy stopped crying when the man helped him fasten the belt.
D.The boy started shouting because his mum couldn’t fasten the seat belt for him.

【推荐2】When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.

Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftovers. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon(煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn’t actually taste like bacon!

I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.

However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

A.Because she mixed the bacon with potatoes.B.Because she put potatoes into the containers.

2. According to the passage, how did the writer save food in her way?
A.By shopping ahead of time.B.By throwing it into the litter bin.
C.By following her mother’s shopping list.D.By planning the next week’s food.
3. What does the underlined word “feast” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Sweet dream.B.Large meal.C.Happy story.D.Beautiful picture.
4. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.It is never too old to learn.B.Eat to live, but not live to eat.
C.Neither food nor life should be wasted.D.There is no such thing as a free lunch.

【推荐3】Hardship comes in different shapes and sizes: losing a job, bills overdue, illness, injuries or the death of a loved one.

Every kind of difficulty takes its toll. But few things in life are as heartbreaking as feeling cut off from the people we love.

Recently, while "sheltering in place" against the coronavirus, I've started reading to my grandchildren via Face Time before they went to sleep.

Mostly, I read to them because I love doing it. But I also do it for their parents' mental health. Besides having to stay indoors, they are forced to homeschool the kids, who can't go to school or to the park or play with their friends.

As a mother, I didn't do everything right. Far from it. But when my three children were small, most nights before bed, I would read to them.

There is something important — something comforting and healing — about the age-old ritual of reading to each other. Sometimes the words we read are so powerful that they will never be forgotten. But hearing them read is a different experience.

When we read to ourselves, we see the words with our eyes. But when someone reads to us, we just need to be still and listen. Sometimes, the voice and the love it carries mean far more than the words.

Today, I read the Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, a book my kids loved long ago. Randy, 9, and Wiley, 7, thought it was funny. Elle, who's 5, usually prefers to read to me, but this time she just wanted to talk. Next, Randy played a song for us on his guitar, the very first song he has written. Finally, I Face Timed with Jonah, who is almost a year old. I read MOO, BAA, LA LA LA! He liked it so much that he gave me kisses over the phone, then we said goodnight.

Now, more than ever, while keeping a safe distance, we all need to hold on to each other.
