If you had to describe yourself to someone else, what would you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but being aware of who you are can help you understand feelings and strengthen friendships.

Self-awareness means knowing your thoughts, feelings and behavior, and understanding how you fit into the world. If you are self-aware, you may know that you love playing basketball because you are good at it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.

Knowing what you like and dislike, what you are good at and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and even which films to watch. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence. The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of the ten important life skills that help young people lead happier and healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn’t mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you have more understanding for other people, too.

A good way to learn about anything is to ask questions. Ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why”. So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you are arguing. If you are wondering whether you’ll like a book, ask yourself what were the last three books you loved and what you liked about them. Looking for patterns in your own likes and dislikes is a good way to learn more about yourself.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different music. Don’t be afraid to dislike something—discovering what you find difficult and challenging is a key part of learning more about yourself.

A.       Think when you’re listening.
B.       Listen carefully to the first sentence.
C.       Don’t think about one or two words for too long.
D.       Try to relax yourself.
E.       It’s important to take some notes.
F.       Listen for important facts.

Do you have any problems on listening? Here are some tips on listening. We hope it can help you in one way or other.

    1

Before you start to listen to something, you need to relax. Don’t be worried or excited. This will help you with your listening.

    2

The first sentence tells a lot about the whole passage. For example, at the very beginning, if you hear “Many shops in many parts of China have decided to take away all kinds of Japanese goods off their shelves but some people say it’s not a good idea. Our reporter says…”, you know you will hear a piece of news, not a children’s story or a science report.

    3

When you’re listening, try to do some thinking. For example, you can think of the following questions: What happened, when, where and how? What was the result and what does the speaker want to tell us? In this way, you may understand the passage better.

    4

It’s important for you to remember some important facts. For example, if the passage is a science report, you should try to remember its findings and how the scientists got their results.

    5

You may hear some words that you don’t know, but don’t spend too much time on them. Very often, you’ll find out what they mean later when you go on with the listening. But you can remember some words or sentences that you think are important, and you can use them when you’re answering the questions.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了生活中常见的尴尬现象以及如何去应对这些情况。

【推荐2】    1     It could have been the time when you pronounced a simple word wrong in class, wore your T-shirt backwards, talked about someone else without realizing that they were right behind you, or secretly tried to take a picture of someone while the flash was on.

Though these embarrassing moments don’t harm us a lot, they come back from time to time and make us feel upset. Even if these moments may have faded after some time, we would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment.     2    When these kinds of feelings return, they are known as a “cringe attack(羞愧综合症)”.

I personally get a quite uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my parents took me to when I was younger.     3     My parents shouted at me—in front of everyone—for being so selfish. From then on, every time I put a strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing scene back.

Why do these “cringe attacks” still pop up in our daily lives even though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago? According to researchers, our brains give special attention to feelings that can be easily noticed.     4     If you have a highly embarrassing or highly emotional moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.

5     Well, we can start by trying to be more objective about our past selves. Consider that you are not alone in your embarrassment—everyone fails or makes silly, embarrassing mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about how we can change for the better.

A.The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the memory will be.
B.In fact, these feelings may last for years.
C.I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself.
D.So how can we deal with this?
E.All of us may have experienced embarrassing moments.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了和朋友争吵后,如何道歉,何时道歉才能修复关系。

【推荐3】Knowing how and when to say sorry can build a better friendship

Have you ever argued with a friend and said or done something you regretted?     1     Knowing how to apologize can help you to become friends again and understand why you fall out in the first place.

Why do we argue?

We argue for all kinds of reasons. For example, your might think your football team is fantastic, but your friend disagree, or you don’t want someone to join in your game. Sometimes, especially if you are angry, things can become out of control, and you will say or do something you regret.     2     But it is important to solve your differences afterwards So bad feelings don’t get worse. This is where an apology can help.

What does saying sorry mean?

We all make mistakes, and apologizing is a good way admitting we have got something wrong and will try not to do it again.     3     An apology needs to share the other person that you are really sorry, that you accept responsible anything for your actions, and that you want their forgiveness.

    4

Sometimes another person may pressure you into taking the blame when it has nothing to do with you. If you feel this is happening, try talking about why you argued in the first place and explain how it made you feel. If you still can’t agree, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you resolve the problem

Does apologizing always work?

5    . It may take time for someone to understand and forgive you. Even after you have said sorry, you could still feel bad.

But you can feel good about trying to fix things and promising to do better next time.
