Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles? Some people think it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it’s easy — you can carry it around with you. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in the summer.
However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source (资源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we don’t recycle much of the plastic we use. In 2006, Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.
So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a recycling bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.

Students are more likely to follow the rules when they understand the reasons for them. For this reason, it is important to explain why you have made certain rules.
Two helpful teaching ways—when setting rules for middle school and high school students are:
◆Make rules that say what to do instead of saying what not to do.
◆Start every rule with an action word (verb).
Perhaps a better way to go about writing classroom rules is to do it democratically (民主地). Get your class together and ask them what rules they want to see in their classroom. I have found that young people are surprisingly conservative (保守的) about the rules. They’ll offer some tough and powerful (强硬而有力的) rules that they all must follow.
By getting students to come up with the rules together, they are setting their own personal rules. It makes them more accountable (有责任的) not only to yourself as the teacher, but also to themselves.
Classroom rules are necessary for learning. When students misbehave, they are disrespecting (不尊重) other students. Everyone in the class has the right to learn. If a student influences other students who are trying to learn, that needs to be stopped.

A study in Scientific Reports last October in 2022, found that seeing or hearing these birds improved people’s feelings of happiness for up to eight hours. And a study in 2020 showed human’s happiness even has something to do with the number of different bird kinds around people’s homes and towns. Another research in 2017 supported the idea that birds are good for human’s brain. All the researches above show that birdwatching is good for mental (心理的) health.
②Why can birds make such a great difference? A very simple reason is the fact that birds can fly. And it is really fascinating. Another reason could be that spending time with flying birds in nature improves mental health, a mental health researcher at King’s College London once said.
③It may surprise you that birdwatching can make people less stressed out. Siting outside and listening to the birds, and getting to know their songs, can really keep you calm. Seeing birds flying can make you full of imagination. And it can let your worries fly away.
④When people search for a safe and free outdoor activity to relax, birdwatching is a good choice. A great thing about birdwatching is that anyone can do it. Here is how to start.
⑤One of the simplest ways to start is by feeding the birds. If you don’t know the names of the birds you see, you can use an app called The Cornell Lab’s free Merlin Bird ID to get to know them by the sounds they make.
⑥For another, if your family has a backyard, do what you can to make it a nice place for birds. One way is by choosing proper plants that attract (吸引) and protect them. The National Audubon Society can help you to know the proper plants. The last simple thing you should know about birds is that “All birds get thirsty”.

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the effect(效果) is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure(结构) of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings had the same result in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

However, they can ask Mona Lisa herself in the show in Beijing. It brings the 500-year-old painting to life.
Now Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting(画) can move her head and wave(挥舞) her hand in 3D, and even answer questions. She can answer the questions about her life, her age and so on. You’ve spent a lot of time studying how to use English in a right way. But have you ever wondered why English speakers say some of the things they say? For example, why do they say “an easy task” is “a piece of cake”? Why do the two letters “OK” means “all right”?
Many English words and phrases have stories behind them. Sometimes these stories can help us look back into the old Western history. Let’s take a look at a few of the original (起初的) common English words and phrases:
OK
OK was an American who lived in the19th century. His name was “Old Kinderhook”. In one year he was trying to take the place of the leader of his town. His supporters went around the town shouting “OK! OK!” The supporters thought their future leader was “all right”. The expression caught on, and now if something is “all right”, people like to say “OK”.
Boss
Is your boss nice to you? If not, just be glad you weren’t living in the old times. Back to that time, bosses could do anything bad to their men and could even beat them! That explains why the word “boss” comes from an old German word meaning “to beat”.
A piece of cake
A famous American writer named Ogden Nash lived in the1930s. Many readers enjoyed his poems and wrote them down in their notebooks. In one of his poems, Nash wrote, “Her picture’s in the papers now, and life’s a piece of cake.” His readers found these words interesting and quickly wrote them down. They thought that if one picture in a newspaper could make you famous, wouldn’t life be easy? For nearly 70 years, “a piece of cake” has meant any task or activity that is easy.
