Once there was a man traveling in a faraway village. As he was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope(绳子) tied to their front leg. No chains(锁链), no cages(笼子). It was clear that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn’t try to get away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller, we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that time, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them, so they never try to break free.”
How could it be? These animals could at any time break free from their ropes. But because they always stuck right where they were, they believed they couldn’t.

The game would begin at 3 p.m. When we arrived at the stadium, there were about thirty minutes left for us to get prepared for the game. But we didn’t see our competitors. Actually they didn’t come until the last minute. They looked worse than we had thought. They were wearing dirty old blue trousers and looked like farm boys. We sat down for a rest, feeling that there was no need for us to make any preparations to play against such a team like that. We would win without doubt.
The game began. One of us got the ball and he shot a long pass to our forward (前锋). From out of nowhere a boy in an old T-shirt stopped the ball and with beautiful style he shot and got two points. Then another two points in a minute. Soon the game was over. We were astonished to hear the whistle at the end of the game. We were beaten by the country team! Down and frustrated, we waved goodbye to them and went back to our school.
After the game, we thought a lot about what led to our failure. We certainly learned that even though your team is very good, you can’t look down upon your competitors and whatever you do, you must always try your best to achieve the result that you desire. The most important lesson we learned from it was that we can never judge a person by their appearance.

In their last moment before the flight took off, I heard a father saying to his daughter, “ I love you, I wish you enough.” The daughter said, “Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough to.” They kissed goodbye and the daughter left. I could see the father was very sad.
Suddenly the father walked towards me and asked me, “Did you ever say goodbye to someone knowing it would be the last time?”
His words made me think of my father. Realizing that my father’s days were limited(有限的),I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I understood what this father was experiencing.
“ Yes, I did.” I answered, “ But why is this a last goodbye?”
“ I am old and my daughter lives much too far away. Maybe her next trip back will be for my funeral (葬礼),” he said.
“ When you were saying goodbye, I heard you say ‘I wish you enough’. What does that mean?”
He began to smile. “my parents used to say it to me . When we say ‘I wish you enough’,we want the other person to have a life filled with enough good things.” He stopped for a moment and continued, “I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate (欣赏、感激) the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life seem much bigger… I wish you enough ‘Hellos’ to get you through the final ‘ Goodbye’”.
He then said goodbye to me and walked away.

The next morning, when I went into the kitchen at 5:45. My dad was so surprised to see me, he said, “Wow, who are you, and where is my sleep-loving daughter?”
“Mareya and I need more time to keep our New Year’s resolutions,” I said, “So, from now on, I’m going to wake up early and cook some food. And, look, I already did resolution No.1!” I showed my new hairstyle(发型)to my dad happily.
When having lunch at school, Mareya and I sat together and ate the food on the list. Tony saw us and asked, “What are you eating? Does it taste good?” Mareya took the list out and said, “Resolution No.2 says our lunch has to be healthy, not necessarily delicious.”
After that, we strictly kept resolution No.3, No.4,...and No.6. One day passed, we did all the things on the list, tired but happy. Mareya said, “I guess if we’re going to do everything on the list better, we’ll have to wake up even earlier.” “Even earlier?!” But I couldn’t let Mareya down, so we agreed to set our alarm clocks half an hour earlier.
However, by Friday, we were too tired to keep them. That afternoon, Mareya and I made up a whole NEW New Year’s resolution list. It was shorter, simpler and best of all, doable.
So if you want to make resolutions, remember: keep it simple!

We had not sat long before another person came in.
Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you. Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burs is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen Burns to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fire place, and herself asking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over?” she asked. looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away?”
“I am afraid I never shall do that.”
“Why?”
“Because I have been wrongly accused(指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”
“Shall I, Miss Temple?”
“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate(夸大)nothing.”

One day two women came before the King. They carried with them a little baby, which was set down on the floor, at the foot of Solomon’s throne(宝座) .
One of the women said “Five days ago I gave birth to a child. This woman and I live in the same house, and three days later she also gave birth, but that same night her child died, and at midnight she arose and, while I was sleeping, took my son away from me, and laid her dead child in its place. When I awoke in the morning I thought at first that my son was dead, until I realized that it was not my child.”
“No,” interrupted the second woman, “she is lying, my lord, she is lying! The living child is mine and the dead is hers!” “No,” cried the first women, wildly. “No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine.”
King Solomon raised his hand for silence. “One of you says ‘my child lives and yours is dead, and the other says ‘your child is dead and my child lives’. There is a simple way to resolve the matter, bring me a sword.”
A sword was brought, and the crowd waited to see what the King would do. “Very well,” he said, “cut the child in half, and give them each half.” The first woman turned pale. She said in a trembling voice. “Give her the child. I beg you, do not kill it.” But the other woman’s face remained hard. “Let it be neither mine nor yours,” she said, “divide it as the King has ordered.” Then Solomon arose, and pointed to the first woman, “The child belongs to her,” he said, “Give her the child, and do not kill it. She is its mother, “Word of this judgment spread throughout Israel, and people marveled (感到惊讶) at the wisdom of the King.
The lesson of this story is rather simple. It is easy to tell the people who really care: they are willing to give up their half in order to keep the whole alive. In short, sometimes insisting on getting your fair share is still a losing strategy.
