China sent a new X-ray astronomical satellite in space, Einstein Probe, on Jan. 9, 2024.
According to Yuan Weimin, a researcher of the satellite project, the satellite is expected to find the first light from supernova explosions (超新星爆炸) in the universe, monitor high-energy transient (瞬态) objects in the universe, which are now poorly understood by scientists.
When developing the satellite, a new generation of detection equipment (探测设备) with large fields of view and high sensitivity (灵敏度) was needed. But the important question was how to make such equipment.
Lobsters (龙虾) are a kind of sea animal which can be found around the world. Scientists discovered early on that lobsters’ eyes are different from other animals’. Lobsters’ eyes are made up of lots of tiny square tubes, pointing to the same center, which allows light from all directions to reflect in the tubes and meet on the retina (视网膜), which gives lobsters a large field of view. Scientists then simulated (模仿) the lobsters’ eyes to create a telescope to catch X-rays in space.
Through working together with other organizations, the X-ray Imaging Laboratory began the research and development work on lobster-eye X-ray imaging technology in 2010 and finally made a breakthrough.
“Thanks to the lobster-eye telescope technology, the Einstein Probe is able to monitor the poorly known soft X-ray band with a large field of view and high sensitivity,” Yuan said.

It collects plastic waste and other rubbish in rivers and near the seaside. Like a real shark, the robot has a big “mouth” on its face. It can help the waste get into its body. The robot is so small that it can get into narrow areas of water. People can use it from 3 kilometers away. It can also follow GPS maps on its own. WasteShark can move through the water at 3 kilometers each hour and clean at most 500 kilos of waste every day.
Collecting plastic waste on the land is easy and not expensive, but it’s different in the ocean. When plastic waste gets into the ocean, it’s very hard to collect because it will break down and turn into small pieces slowly.
Several WasteSharks are already being used around the world, including the US, the UK, India, South Korea and South Africa.
1. The WasteShark can ________.A.collect waste in the water | B.find sharks in the ocean |
C.collect only plastic in the sea | D.help people keep away from sharks |

A.India | B.the UK | C.Japan | D.America |
A.WasteShark can collect waste in the ocean easier and less expensive than collect it near the shore. |
B.WasteShark can’t get into narrow areas of water. |
C.WasteShark can clean at least 500 kilos of waste every day. |
D.WasteShark can follow GPS maps by itself. |
A.explain how plastic pollutes the sea | B.tell people to save the sharks |

Instead of pens and paper, students in the classrooms of the future will have headsets and rather than learning by rote (死记硬背)they will be encouraged to take a more hands—on experience to their studies.
Although in their early stages of development, schools in China are studying how they can put VR( virtual reality 虚拟现实)lessons into their classroom experience. One such lesson, by online game developer, Net dragon, uses VR to teach children fire safety. Students are put into a virtual environment where a fire has broken out. They must crawl (爬行)across the floor, avoid desks and chairs and so on, and escape carefully.
VR education tools are not just for school children, either. At the VR medical school under Sichuan University, a virtual system allows medical students to examine organs (器官)from different ways. They can even separate organs for closer examination. A virtual knife is now in development, which means students can practice their operation skills without the need for a real body.
Simon Leung, vice—chairman of Net Dragon, said the company has developed VR immersive(沉浸式的)classrooms and computers that send students to a 360 degree immersive digital world based around their curriculum. Moreover, the VR headsets can tell whether children are focused on the task at hand, Leung said.
VR School, a Beijing—based firm, developed an immersive education system, which is already being used by 10 schools. It begins offering courses to train teachers and instructors with the skills to use VR in their lessons.
Although Chinese parents are often more than willing to allow their children to use technology to help their kids, they are suspicious of VR as they are unsure if the technology will have any side effects.
Besides, the equipment comes at a price. A top—end VR headset and computer could cost upward of 10,000 yuan (1,475 U.S. dollars). “More must be done to develop the technology, which will lower the cost and improve the user’s experience,” said Huang Ronghuai, professor at the Smart Learning Institute under Beijing Normal University, “Still we are optimistic (乐观的)that we can really change the present model of education.”

It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. After testing different combinations, they chose two materials that worked: a silver-plated yarn (镀银纱)that can light up and a kind of thread (纺线)that conducts (传导)electricity.
The results have been admirable. It’s not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10, 000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers (障碍)or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or meditating. The waves were then translated into messages like “anxious” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute (聋哑的) people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them, ”said Peng.

The annual gala, which is held on Lunar New Year’s Eve, has become a tradition during Spring Festival celebrations. Millions of families switch on their TV sets to watch the gala — usually lasting over four hours — after having a grand dinner.
Consisting of a lot of performances, from music programs to crosstalk and acrobatic shows, the gala which has been held for 38 years, gathers many stars and artists. Even for many famous stars, getting a chance to perform on the gala’s stage is an honor and a gateway to be more widely-known.
But China Media Group, the hosts and broadcasters of the gala, have founded a program to help ordinary people and lesser-known artists to compete for an opportunity to perform in the gala. One of the lucky groups was a children’s choir.
The children’s choir from Qihang School in Dayuan Village in Hunen beat lots of other competitors from different places and finally showed on the 2021 Spring Festival Gala. The headmaster of the school told China Daily that he and all the children were very excited and rejoiced upon hearing the news. The school set up the choir in 2017 to increase the children’s self-confidence with the power of music. Over recent years, the choir’s teachers have kept a close eye on musical competitions and variety shows, as they thought attending such events would make the children more social. They did try so many times, but they never expected that they would be chosen to perform on the gala stage. Some children said their parents were so proud to see them appear on TV.
Chen Linchun, the chief director of the 2021 Spring Festival Gala, selected the finalists on Feb 5, along with more than 10 stars. He says the effort is to make the program a down-to-earth platform that is open to ordinary people. “We wish to tell the audience that it is possible to be part of the gala if you have enough passion and talent to achieve your dreams,” he says.
