Philip is a 55-year-old blind man. He can smell a rose (玫瑰), but he cannot tell if it is red, white or blue. It does not matter to him; he enjoys the beauty of the smell itself.
But his life is not a bed of roses. It is difficult for him to travel. He cannot drive, but he can travel by bus. At home he cannot just look out of window to see what the weather is like. He cannot look at the clock on the wall to see what time it is. He uses a special radio for that.
He is a musician. He plays the saxophone (萨克斯管), but not in a band (乐队). Four times a week, he sits down on the sidewalk and plays. He puts an upside-down (倒放的) hat in front of him with a little money in it.

This Sunday, I stopped walking and went over to her. As I got closer, I realized that there were three turtles(乌龟), slowly walking around the base of the metal cage. She had a fourth turtle on her knee that she was carefully wiping with a brush, which made me feel surprised.
“Hello, ” I said. “If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”
“I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied.
“Anything on a turtle’s shell weakens the turtle’s ability to take in heat and blocks its ability to swim. It can also impair and weaken the shell over time.”
She went on, “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”
“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, how exactly are your efforts here truly making a difference? ”

When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles, I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!”
That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged(慢跑), I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish.
Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed(尴尬的) that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare(比较)ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-old men who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn’t regret(后悔) having such an experience.

On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch(鲈鱼)with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.
When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a perch . The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. Then the father lit a match(火柴) and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.--- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
"You'll have to put it back, son," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy.
"There will be other fish," said his father.
"Not as big as this one," cried the boy.
He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could know everything by his father's clear voice that the decision could not be changed. He slowly worked the hook(钩) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father's cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.

I probably won’t work as a reporter after my graduation, but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism (新闻工作) has been useless. In fact, I have picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team. I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was afraid. Talking to strangers was one of my fears. But I collected my courage and did it. I talked to the students, the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to come from facts. As a student reporter, I have learned to do research and to think critically (批判性地) about what I read. Discovering the facts is important when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student reporter, I always know that I have a lot to learn. ▲ . I have learned how not to take negative (负面的) feedback personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller and student. If you are ever given a chance to write for a school newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything you can!

William, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanuts.” I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. I remembered the stories he told me of how he fed the monkeys when he was a kid. Then, he saw the goldfish! He acted as if he was seeing them for the first time.
Poor Grandpa! He fell ill with Alzheimer’s Disease (阿尔茨海默症) last year. The doctor said it was a progressive brain disorder which could destroy a person’s memory. The patient might also not be able to make reasonable judgments. The saddening part was that it was a lifelong disease.
But when my parents invited him to stay with us, he refused and said he liked living alone. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Ray, Grandpa!” Even if he had forgotten who I was, he would always be my beloved grandfather.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误。正确为A,错误为B。1. Grandpa wants to eat peanuts in the park.
