With a round face, short hair and a big nose, my dad is a hardworking worker in a factory in Beijing. He is very serious, but I know that everything he does is for our family. He likes playing football, just like me. We always talk about football and play it together on weekends.
A few days ago, something interesting happened at home. It was a sunny Sunday and my dad didn’t go to work. After lunch, my dad was asleep and I felt a little bit bored. Suddenly, I had a funny idea. I decided to draw on my dad’s face while he was sleeping to surprise him and make him laugh.
I slowly drew on his face with my yellow, blue, red and green pens. It took me about 10 minutes to finish my dad’s “makeup”, but it didn’t wake him up.
Then I went back into the living room and pretend (假装) to watch TV. About half an hour later, my dad woke up, looked at himself in the mirror and asked me, “Am I the coolest Dad in the world?” It really made me laugh. Fathers don’t necessarily have to be serious all the time.
Now I live at school, and I really miss the little tricks (把戏) I like to play on him. Fathers play important roles in our mental development. To kids, the name of father is another name for love.
As the old saying goes, “A father’s love is like a mountain.”

William, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanuts.” I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. I remembered the stories he told me of how he fed the monkeys when he was a kid. Then, he saw the goldfish! He acted as if he was seeing them for the first time.
Poor Grandpa! He fell ill with Alzheimer’s Disease (阿尔茨海默症) last year. The doctor said it was a progressive brain disorder which could destroy a person’s memory. The patient might also not be able to make reasonable judgments. The saddening part was that it was a lifelong disease.
But when my parents invited him to stay with us, he refused and said he liked living alone. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Ray, Grandpa!” Even if he had forgotten who I was, he would always be my beloved grandfather.

3. After getting to Grandpa’s home, the neighbor spread some news.
4. Grandpa is the writer’s beloved person in his mind.
5. The writer’s parents bring Grandpa to live with them to make sure of his safety.

She doesn’t remember ever watching it in the morning or afternoon. When I was young, we had only about 3 or 4 different channels. I think they were channel 3, 4, 6, and 9. My brothers and sisters and I would sometimes fight about which channel to watch. But we usually enjoyed the same shows.
Nowadays we can get hundreds of channels on TV. I can’t believe it! There are channels with only old movies, and channels with only cooking, and channels with only fishing. It’s amazing! There is a channel for everything. I wonder how much my brothers and sisters and I would fight if we had hundreds of channels when I was a child. Of course we had only one television set. These days I notice families with 2 or 3 or more television sets in their homes. I guess it stops people from arguing over which channel to choose from.

Ellen: I spent 8 days in Germany when I was studying for my Level A. I went to school every day and spent the evenings with a family. It was great that I had to speak German all the time. However, the most useful thing was that I was paying more attention to communicating in the language, instead of speaking perfectly correct German. I was really glad that people could understand what I was saying. I'd certainly introduce it to other students who are studying languages.
Frank: I went on an exchange with my classmates for a week in Japan. Before the exchange, I thought my understanding of grammar was pretty good, but I had much trouble in listening and speaking. So, what I thought most meaningful was that I had no choice but to use everyday language skills instead of the language from books. If I had the opportunity (机遇), I'd certainly take part in another language exchange.
Alice: I took part in a French exchange. It lasted two weeks and I stayed with my exchange family in a small town just outside Paris. I'm quite a shy person, so in the first few days, I was kind of nervous, but then it was fine. I love French and my French has always been good. But the exchange really helped develop my speaking skills, and made me a much more confident (自信的) person. I felt great to be able to talk with French people. I also found that everyone who took part in the exchange did a lot better in their end-of-year exams.

He was about ten years old and was wearing one blue glove and one brown glove. His coat was too small for him.
As he walked away, I saw his shoes, which were too old to wear. I rolled down my window and called him over. He stopped and turned around to look at me. I asked him if he needed some money. He replied, “No. That’s okay.” The parking area was wet. I could tell that his feet were cold because he kept moving his weight from one foot to the other. “Please,” I held out a five-dollar bill (纸币).”It’s not much, but when the money is shared, it is much more useful,” I said. After hearing my kind words, he took off one of his gloves and reached for the money. His small hand was red and cold. He smiled and went away after saying “Thank you” to me. That smile made me feel warm from the bottom of my heart in the cold winter.

When I was in high school, I worked part-time helping Dad sell fruits and vegetables at a market. One day, as I was preparing the fruits, a little boy came by with his mom and sister. He was about eight years old, and the girl, five or six. They were looking at the fruits in front of me. I heard the kids say to their mom (in French ), “They’re good !” I knew it was French , because I can speak and understand it.
Then I noticed how the mom was picking the fruits. At first I thought she was really looking at the fruits because she was facing them. But then I noticed how much she had to feel and smell each one as she picked them out. And she often asked her son if it looked okay, but looked way above where his face was. Putting what I saw together, I was sure she was blind.
Both of the kids continued to help their mom pick out the fruits. The son made sure the fruits were not obviously bad, and the daughter handed them to her mom. The woman then felt each one and smiled, and the daughter would put them into their basket. The kids were smiling while helping their mom pick the fruits out.
Their smile and gentle manner moved me in a way that never happened before. It was so beautiful to see such young kids so willingly help. Most kids that age would be picking out candies or toys in a store for themselves, instead of helping their mom pick out fruits, as the two kids did.
It was great to witness the moment, but not so great because I didn’t tell the mom how beautiful her children were in their language. This is what I regret to this day.
