With a round face, short hair and a big nose, my dad is a hardworking worker in a factory in Beijing. He is very serious, but I know that everything he does is for our family. He likes playing football, just like me. We always talk about football and play it together on weekends.

A few days ago, something interesting happened at home. It was a sunny Sunday and my dad didn’t go to work. After lunch, my dad was asleep and I felt a little bit bored. Suddenly, I had a funny idea. I decided to draw on my dad’s face while he was sleeping to surprise him and make him laugh.

I started to become interested, but Sarah told me to go back to camp.

Only then did I notice that the sun was setting and it was getting dark. I slowly went back the way we had come, because I wanted to see more beautiful things. Before I knew it, I had arrived at the camp. I may never be the best hiker, but I won my hiking badge. I can find beautiful things in nature everywhere. I really know how to enjoy it.

Giving gifts is a way of showing thanks or love. The rules of accepting (接受) gifts are different in China and in the West.

When Lucy, from the UK, gave a gift to her Chinese friend for the first time, she couldn’t understand it. “He refused (拒绝) to accept it twice, and when he finally accepted it, he didn’t open it. He just took it and put it away. After that, I never heard about it again. He never said he liked it or not.”

In the West, it is polite to open it in front of the giver and say thanks. When you get a gift, the giver hopes that you are thrilled and really like it. But it is different in China. Usually, people don’t open the gift until the giver leaves. If they open the gift in front of the giver, the giver will think they are not polite. For the same reason, the Chinese will refuse a gift twice or three times before accepting it. If you are the giver, give it again until it is accepted after the third time.

Today, some young people in China are turning to Western rules of accepting gifts. That’s OK, but it would be better to follow the Chinese people when it comes to getting gifts from elders.
