People say that family is the first school of life, and parents are a child’s first teachers. On Oct 23, the Law on Family Education Promotion (《家庭教育促进法》) was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. It was carried out on January 1st, 2022.
The law says that parents should be responsible ( 负 责 的 ) for family education. For example, the law (法律) stops parents from placing too much pressure on their children. Parents should carefully plan the time for their children to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure they don’t spend too much time on the Internet.
Also, it says that society should provide guidance (指导), support and services for family education. In fact, more than 50 percent of parents said they do not know how to educate their children, according to a survey by All-China Women’s Federation. The law encourages schools to make family education guidance and practice activities. Local governments are asked to help schools and families to better communicate with each other.
The law also gives special mention to children of migrant workers (外出务工人员) in rural areas. They may be alone when their parents have left to work in cities. It asks local governments to help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children’s education.

In some western countries, many children do housework to get pocket money (零用钱). They usually start to do this when they are ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests. They don’t have much free time on weekdays. They often do housework on weekends.
Young kids only do easy housework. So they don’t get much money. But that’s enough (足够的). Many of them only want to buy candy. And candy is cheap! They often help wash the dishes, clean the floor or fed (喂养) the pet cat or dog.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want more expensive things than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass or cook meals.

If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he showed people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 a.m. every day to milk cows for his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt upset because of his worn-out clothes and common looks. His mother encouraged him, “Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?”
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate (辩论) team. But one after another, he lost 12 competitions. The young man was very disappointed with himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became famous. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers include How to Win Friends, Influence People, How to Stop Worrying. More than 50 million copies of his books have been translated into 38 languages. They are still helping people on the road to success.

At about 8:00 a.m., I was walking along Ocean Road to the school. A boy on a bike passed me. He was riding his bike and keeping close to the sidewalk (人行道) . The street was empty.
Suddenly a car came along the street. As it passed the boy on the bike, it hit him. The boy fell off his bike on to the road. The car did not stop and it went away.
The car was quite old. It was red. I did not get its number because the license plate (车牌)was so dirty that I couldn’t see the car number clearly. The driver was a young man with long hair. I can’t guess his age.
I ran to the boy and found he was badly hurt. Then I took out my mobile phone and called the police right now. A policeman arrived and he asked me to make this statement (陈述) at the police station.

With its beautiful art, the cartoon movie Chang An takes us back to the Tang Dynasty(618—907). The stories of Li Bai and Gao Shi come to life before our eyes. In the movie, Li is talented in writing poems. Gao is a common man. He has problems reading and speaking when he is young. When he sees words, there seems to be a group of tadpoles(蝌蚪)swimming around on the paper.
However, even so, I still like Gao. A girl named Pei Shier wins a fight over him. This makes Gao see that he needs to work harder on his skills. So, he doesn’t take the Kung Fu. But he studies hard and spends more time reading. He plans to join the big exam—Ke Ju. It shows us that Gao is always ready to face different problems. And it also turns out that luck likes those who work hard. In the end, Gao becomes a great army leader and leads his army to win a big fight.

Some people think communication is a problem for only school children and parents. However, it is not true. Children of all ages do not agree with their parents. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy and what you ask for. If you don’t think you can speak to them in a good way at that time, try writing a letter to them. That would be easier for you.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. John’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a mobile phone. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. John bought the mobile phone, but he could only use it on weekends.
Talk about your values (价值观). The values of your parents may be different from yours. Tell them what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them know more about you.
A good relationship with parents can make you a better and happier person. Have a try!

3. When could John use his mobile phone?

Think about someone who loves and supports you most. For many, parents might come to mind. Our parents play a big role in our lives without doubt. Many parents start making changes to their own lives even before their children are born. They might change their jobs, save money, or buy clothes and toys for their coming children. After a child is born, parents might sacrifice (牺牲) both time and hobbies. Instead, they go to their children’s soccer games or piano performances. Over half of the parents said that they made sacrifices to give their children the best, according to The Guardian.
Parents might even put themselves in poor situations to help their children get the best education. Wu Qian, a mother from Guangdong, China, sent her son to one of the best schools in her city when he was 7. Since Wu Qian was working at the school, her son could get a tuition discount (学费折扣). Wu Qian could also spend more time with her son. With the story, it’s important to show thanks to your parents and family members. When we meet trouble in life, try to turn to your parents and face the difficulties together and you will see the bright side for the future.
