Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. With more and more rain falling and the hot weather, it’s time for snakes to be active. Living in the city, it never crosses your mind that we might meet them face to face.
There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes on the earth. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can’t walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, on the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.
Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicines with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight(视力), so they usually cannot see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. But up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than other animals.
People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called(所谓的) “elephant graveyard(墓地).” Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories(象牙), but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves(洞穴) until they get better or die.

Sun bears(马来熊) are the smallest of the world’s eight bear species(物种). They have a black coat and a white or golden colour on their bodies. Their homes are in the tropical forests(热带雨林) of Southeast Asia. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. They can grow to be 1.4 meters in height and 65 kilograms in weight. They usually live alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves.
Scientists studied sun bears in the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. They found that although sun bears mostly live alone, they have developed a surprising social skill. They can copy(模仿) other sun bears’ facial expressions(面部表情) as a form of communication. They can even copy exact muscular(肌肉的) movements that other sun bears make—such as making a face.
The ability to copy facial expressions is found in humans, gorillas(大猩猩), some monkeys and some other animals. But until now, only humans and gorillas have the ability to exactly copy facial expressions. However, scientists found that sun bears can copy facial expressions as well as humans and gorillas. This surprised them because sun bears are alone and they have no close relationship with human beings.
Although they live alone in the wild, the sun bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions such as hitting and biting. Scientists are still not sure what messages the sun bears were sending to one another.

In many countries, the COVID-19 has also changed the way people greet each other. To stop the spread of disease, people give up their usual greeting styles and invent safe ways. Let’s take a look!
Lean forward, touch cheeks and make a kissing sound. This is French people’s favorite way of greeting. It’s very romantic(浪漫的). But when facing the virus, kisses are not good. The expert Philippe Lichtfus gives people a suggestion: simply looking into a person’s eyes can be a greeting. It’s not so romantic but it’s safe.
Like the French, Italians are also romantic people. When they meet, they always hug or kiss each other. Recently, an Italian grandma made a video to help everyone fight against the disease. She says that if you meet, you can close one of your eyes and give them a wink. Isn’t it cute?
It’s a very Australian thing to shake hands. But if you do this, the virus can jump from one person to another. Now a health official in Australia says a pat on the back would be better. But it also has some problems. For example, it’s a bit crude if you do this to your teachers.
A video shows that an interesting greeting way is now popular in Iran. In the video, 3 Iranians meet and tap their feet against each other. They wear masks with their hands in their pockets. It looks like they are playing a fun game. If we can’t shake hands, why not try to “shake” feet?

Scientists did an experiment (实验) to answer this question. They prepared many photos of men faces. Each face was shown in four ways: without a mask, wearing a cloth mask, wearing a blue medical mask, and covering the lower half of the face with a black book.
Then, the scientists showed the photos to 43 women. They were asked to pick out the most attractive (迷人的) face. According to the results, the photos with medical masks topped the list. And the photos with cloth masks came in second place.
In the past, we usually stayed away from mask wearers. We just thought that they might be sick and might make us sick, too. But now, the situation has changed. When we see people not wearing masks in public places, we might feel unsafe. As a result, mask wearers are now considered to be healthier and more attractive.
Masks also make the wearer more attractive by covering part of his face. Our brain fills in the missing part of it. The appearance we imagine may be better than the real one.
It’s really helpful to wear a mask. Making you prettier is just one reason ...

No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers(温度计)were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites, Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a, kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

Tourist maps, for example, have signs to show places of interest in an area. When tourists read these maps, it is easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place and it is easy for them to go and find their ways to these places, too.
Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long trips. We use different numbers to stand for different roads. For example, if you want to go to Wood Green, you just follow No.621 Road and keep looking at the road signs.
Distribution (分布) maps use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, what languages people speak, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or whether a place is short of water.
Some maps, such as railway maps, use straight (直的) lines to show everything. It’s easy for people to read them. Trains are fast. People don’t have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips.

In China you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the sound of the word for “clock” is similar to the sound of “death”. Also, don’t wrap(用……包裹) a present in white, black or blue paper, because they are the colors for funerals(葬礼). Don’t give a knife, because something sharp can cut a friendship.
In Russia if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them(one, three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her.
