The World is in Danger

Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. But what are the main problems we face?

The greenhouse effect

The atmosphere (大气层) around the Earth is necessary for all living things. It is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and keeping heat from getting out. Without it, the Earth would be the same as the Moon—cold and lifeless.

When we burn fuels (燃料) such as petrol and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide (CO₂). Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to rise, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.

Cutting down forests

Every year, we destroy (破坏) nature by cutting down many forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO₂ and produce oxygen (O₂). Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of animals that live in forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by rain. This can result in floods and even more damage (伤害) to the environment.

Bad habits

Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as litter. To protect the environment, we need to take proper action. We should be different from many consumers and become “green consumers”. This means that we should only buy and use products friendly to the environment. We should also recycle as many things as we can. We can reuse things for the same purpose as before, or we can use them for new purposes. Then, we can make a difference.

1. Why is the atmosphere around the Earth necessary for all living things?

A.Many seaside cities may disappear.B.The atmosphere keeps in too much heat.

A.People who make friends with green consumers.
B.People who sell products friendly to the environment.
C.People who buy products nice to the environment.
D.People who recycle as many things as they can.
4. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To tell us what to do in the future.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了身体需要水分的生物机理以及什么时候需要喝水。

【推荐1】Have you ever heard the idea that you need eight glasses of water a day? In fact, it won’t make you brighter and it won’t make you feel clear. It might, however, make you have to go to the washroom a lot.

Many people don’t understand the biology(生物学)behind their bodies. The fact is that when you understand how your systems work, you’re able to make better decisions.

For the most part, your body will tell you when you need to drink water because you’ve got these wonderful and surprising things-kidneys (肾脏). Your body is an environment where everything needs to be in a good balance( 平衡). If levels of anything get too high or too low, then it is the job of the kidneys to keep them just right.

Imagine you are running for a long time and you’re losing water, then it may lead to dehydration. And then you’ll do whatever you need to get some water. So thanks to your kidneys, your body is really good at keeping water.

But if you stop counting eight glasses of water a day, how much should you drink? The answer is: there is no should. In fact, everything you have has water—an apple has water, so does your breakfast. So as long as you’re thirsty, trust your body.

【推荐2】Instead of gobbling(狼吞虎咽) your food, try eating more slowly. It may help you drop those unwanted pounds. The conclusion is from a new study by Chinese researcher.

The study showed that compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese(肥胖的). But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to obese. In addition, people who ate slowly tended (往往会) to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed. “However, this study could not prove that speed eating causes or stops obesity,” the researcher noted.

"Slow eating has its advantages and a few disadvantages ,” said Samantha Heller from New York City. “on the one hand , slow eating gives our body time to register a sense of satisfaction and fullness, so we eat less. We are more likely to enjoy a taste of food. On the other hand, the longer people sit in front of food, the more food they will eat, ”she said.

“Speed eating appears to be far more harmful. People who eat quickly, as many of us do, gobble far more food than they need. In many European countries, slow eating is a way of life,” Heller said. In America, speed eating takes the lead. Thus we need to encourage people to have a change, learn the way of slower eating from Europeans and get a true enjoyment of food.
