China’s 15-year-old Chen Ye won gold in the men’s park final of skateboarding at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept.25.
Chen started getting into this sport in 2016. “I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance, I saw a skate board. I decided to give it a try,” Chen said to China Youth Daily. Although it was really challenging (挑战) to stay on the board at first, Chen found it very interesting. “Every time I did some difficult moves, I felt the joy of making progress,” said Chen. Slowly, Chen needed a better skate park for training. To meet this need, his father decided to make a skate bowl himself. “He would work on it late into the night, sometimes until three or four in the morning,” said Chen. “I'm really thankful for my father’s support.”
As a junior high school student, Chen needed to find a balance between his schoolwork and skateboarding. His only “privilege (特权)” was not having to take PE classes, so he could use that time to do his schoolwork. After school he needed to practice skateboarding for hours in his own skate bowl. He trained in the morning, studied in the afternoon and sometimes had to have special classes with the teachers’ help. While getting ready for the match this year, Chen even disagreed with his father over his study plan. He wanted to train for more hours at night to avoid influencing with daytime classes.
Looking back on his seven years of learning to skate, Chen said this experience made him stronger and braver to do something he truly loves.

The World is in Danger
Our world is in danger. We must do something to protect the environment. But what are the main problems we face?
The greenhouse effect
The atmosphere (大气层) around the Earth is necessary for all living things. It is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and keeping heat from getting out. Without it, the Earth would be the same as the Moon—cold and lifeless.
When we burn fuels (燃料) such as petrol and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide (CO₂). Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere, and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is increasing. This causes sea level to rise, and in the future may cause cities to disappear.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy (破坏) nature by cutting down many forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO₂ and produce oxygen (O₂). Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of animals that live in forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be easily destroyed by rain. This can result in floods and even more damage (伤害) to the environment.
Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as litter. To protect the environment, we need to take proper action. We should be different from many consumers and become “green consumers”. This means that we should only buy and use products friendly to the environment. We should also recycle as many things as we can. We can reuse things for the same purpose as before, or we can use them for new purposes. Then, we can make a difference.
27. Why is the atmosphere around the Earth necessary for all living things?A.Because the Moon is cold and lifeless. |
B.Because it is like a greenhouse. |
C.Because it lets sunlight in and keeps heat from getting out. |
D.Because with it the Earth is cold and lifeless. |
A.Many seaside cities may disappear. | B.The atmosphere keeps in too much heat. |
C.The Earth’s temperature will rise. | D.The sea level will increase. |
A.People who make friends with green consumers. |
B.People who sell products friendly to the environment. |
C.People who buy products nice to the environment. |
D.People who recycle as many things as they can. |
A.To tell us what to do in the future. |
B.To teach us why and how to protect the environment. |
C.To inspire us how to make a difference. |
D.To encourage us to live in new and different ways in the future. |
Whether studying for exams, working on a project or writing a paper, we’ve all been under great pressure at some point. When it gets a bit strong, we can reach a high level of tiredness — the terrible burnout (过度疲劳) .
However, that feeling of tiredness is not just physical. It can be mental (心理的) as well. According to Psychology (心理学), today, burnout isn’t just caused by working long hours; it is more about being under great pressure for a long time. The result can be feelings of anger, sadness and tiredness. It can even kill our creativity and reduce our productivity.
But what can we do to avoid the bad influence of burnout? Well, there is some ad vice that may help you. Psychologist Albert Bandura thinks that you should believe in your ability to complete a task at hand. The feeling that you are able to succeed means that a difficult task might be less difficult and tiring.
Finding ways to express your creative side may help, too. Not everyone can stay creative in their jobs, so they need to find other ways. They could paint, write or take part in the local theater. All of these may help people get away from the huge pressure in their working life.
Looking after yourself and things around you can also be helpful. The result is that you live in a clean and positive environment. We should have healthy and positive thoughts instead of negative ones. Having a positive mental attitude (态度) towards everything you do means that you may feel more confident in yourself as well.
Burnout is a common condition connected with the pressure of the modern world. It has a huge influence on your work and life in general. We can deal with the burnout step by step, which can do good to not just us, but our bosses and families.
31. Why do people have the terrible burnout?A.Because they have physical problems that kill their creativity. |
B.Because they just work for a long time without resting. |
C.Because they are under great pressure for too long. |
D.Because they have the feelings of anger, sadness and tiredness. |
