Three young people told us their ideas about visiting museums.
Chris I prefer museums where they move things round regularly, and bring in new things to keep it interesting. I also like to have things to listen to as well as look at. I suppose I like museums because I’m really interested in history and art. We study these subjects at school but I’ve actually found out a lot more about them from museums than from my textbooks. |
Emily There are lots of great museums for me to visit in my city. You should never try to see a whole museum the first time you go. Just go to one or two rooms, and then return as often as you can to see the rest. For me, it’s important that the people who work in the museum are pleasant, and happy to talk to me about the things on show. |
Daniel I don’t go to museums much, except during my holidays in new cities. Then I make sure I spend at least a day going to the most famous ones. If it’s a big museum and I don’t have much time, I sometimes walk into a room and choose just five things to look at. I also take a tour if there is one, as I learn so much more from listening to the person showing us around than I do if I’m by myself. |
21. Why does Chris like museums?
A.He wants to move around. | B.He likes new things. |
C.He likes reading textbooks. | D.He enjoys history and art. |
A.There are things to listen to and look at. |
B.People working there are friendly. |
C.There are new things on show. |
D.Someone can show her around. |
A.Go to one or two rooms first. | B.Choose to look at just five things. |
C.Return to see it next time. | D.Visit the museum by himself. |
I can still remember the day when Mr. Pearson asked me to wait after class for a “quick talk”. He was my science teacher. Although I had always been good at science, I had given up a bit with schoolwork by Grade 8. So that afternoon, Mr. Pearson sat down next to me and asked me what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I told him I wanted to fix cars because I loved cars.
“What about making them?” he said.
“Making them?” I asked. “Like in a factory, do you mean?”
“No.” said Mr. Pearson. “I mean being an engineer and getting proper training to design cars-the best cars in the world possibly.”
“That sounds pretty cool,” I said. It was something I’d never thought I might be able to do.
“Well,” said Mr. Pearson, “I know that you are good enough at science to do that. But at the moment, you’re not really trying.”
“I just...find everything a bit boring,” I said.
“It is sometimes boring when you’re in Grade 8,” said Mr. Pearson. “But it’s like climbing a mountain. You can’t get up to the top until you’ve worked your way up from the bottom. It’s hard sometimes. The path is steep (陡的), and there’s no view. But get yourself up to the top, and you’ll see the most amazing views.”
Mr. Pearson was there for me after that, to explain things and help me with any problems.
And every month or two, he asked me, “How are things on that mountain?” “No views yet,” I always said, “but I’m still going up.”
Mr. Pearson was right about the mountain. At last, I was interested in science and was really excellent at it.
24. What did the student want to do with the rest of his life?A.Fix cars. | B.Make cars. | C.Design cars. | D.Teach science. |
A.He suggested taking more classes. |
B.He compared learning to making a car. |
C.He said science was very easy. |
D.He said learning was like climbing a mountain. |
A.Mr. Pearson likes travelling. |
B.Mr. Pearson is really a helpful teacher. |
C.Mr. Pearson’s words are hard to understand. |
D.Mr. Pearson wants to be an engineer himself. |
You see advertisements (ads) every day. Ads try to persuade (说服) you to buy things or tell people about coming events for you to take part in.
How to write an ad? Before you write an ad von need to know your readers. What group people are you trying to reach?
Writing an outline (提纲) can make sure you include all the important information. Imagine your school is having a fair to raise money for a new playground. You want as many students as possible to come. Use words that will draw people’s attention. Keeping your sentences short will help your readers read your ad more quickly. You can make an outline like this:
Sample Ad Outline Purpose of your ad: To persuade students to come to the fair Your readers: Students in our school Questions your ad will answer: What is the event? The Hillsdale School Fair. Why should they go to the event? To help raise more money for a new school playground. Where’s the event? The Hillsdale School Gym. When is the event? Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Words and phrases that are persuasive and get attention: “Share in the excitement!” “Don’t miss out on fun!” “Raise money for our school!” |

Now you have decided which words to use in your ad, you also need to choose a design (设 计) that will make your ad persuasive. Bold (加粗) letters and bright colors get people’s attention. Picking the right picture to appear on the ad is an important step. Don’t try to fit too many words and pictures into your ad. Try different styles until you work out which one is the best. Then do the final draft of your ad and bring the words and the design together! Look! What a good example it is!
Keep reading ads and practicing writing your own ads until you can be a good writer of ads!
27. What should you know before you write an ad?A.The readers. | B.The words. | C.The pictures. | D.The design. |
A.Because the sentences are long. |
B.Because it doesn’t use bold letters. |
C.Because it has as many pictures as possible. |
D.Because it includes all the important information. |
A.By telling a story. | B.By showing a saying. |
C.By giving a suggestion. | D.By showing facts with numbers. |
A.Introduce the ways to raise money. | B.Explain how to write ads. |
C.Give information about a school fair. | D.Describe the importance of writing ads. |
Do you often compare yourself to other people? Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself to someone else. It’s a natural behavior that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more. However, it s not always helpful and you can find yourself fall in a comparison trap (陷阱). This is when you always measure yourself against others and base your feelings on how well they seem to be doing.
Comparison can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. “Comparing up” means seeing someone is better than you and using that to encourage yourself to aim higher and try harder. However, sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and undermine your confidence. “Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you’re doing well, but it can also stop you wanting to improve.
How do you escape comparison trap? If your feelings depend on what other people are doing, always stay with cheerleaders. Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths rather than compare themselves to you. If you follow social media (媒体) accounts that make you feel you are failing in any way, unfollow them. Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead. Finally, pay attention to your own achievements and how you can improve. The best person you can compete with is yourself.
Let’s make positive, healthy comparisons. Instead of trying to be the best aim to be your best. This means you value your own achievements and not someone else’s. Celebrate progress instead of the final result. It doesn’t matter if someone is better or faster than you, it’s how hard you try that’s important. Set some goals and pay attention to your progress. Instead of saying “I can’t do it”, say “I can’t do it yet”.
31. What is the purpose of comparing yourself to others according to the text?A.To knock your confidence. |
B.To learn from each other and achieve more. |
C.To make others feel bad about themselves. |
D.To stop you want to move. |
A.Increase. | B.Build. | C.Weaken. | D.Get. |
A.Competing with yourself is not necessary. |
B.Your feelings always depend on other people. |
C.We can follow the ways to escape comparison trap. |
D.Friends can make you laugh and show you lovely places. |
A.Valuing others’ achievements. | B.Celebrating your progress. |
C.Trying to be better than everyone else. | D.Trying to be the best in everything. |
A.Suggestions on “comparing up”. | B.Keys to stopping comparison. |
C.Benefits of aiming high. | D.Ideas about making comparison. |

Imagine you’re in a sci-fi (科幻小说) world, and you video-call your friend. You might see them in a three-dimensional (3D) way or in holograms (全息影像). Although this isn’t possible in real life yet, researchers recently made holograms easier to create, said a new study.
To take a 3D photo of a person, most hologram technologies need special cameras. They record how the person looks from different angles (角度) under different lights. This information makes the hologram look lifelike. However, holograms can’t be widely used because they are difficult to make.
The researchers from Chiba University made a new computer program. It can turn normal pictures we take into 3D holograms.
Their program uses a technology called deep neural networks (神经网络). First, it receives information from a picture taken by a normal camera. It then guesses the depth of things in the image. With all the information, the program creates a 3D hologram.
In the future, when holograms become more common, they can help more people. Medical students can learn quickly by looking at 3D pictures of the human body.
But some people don’t like this idea. They think that problems will happen if people use the technology too often. They might not go out to meet friends because they can see their friends and watch a movie at home with friends, even if they live in another country.
