Chinese researchers reached the top of Qomolangma on May 4th, 2022. They set up the world’s highest automatic (自动的) weather station at an altitude (海拔) 8,830 meters. The station helps Chinese scientists to directly collect data (数据) from the top of the world’s highest mountain and study the effects of climate (气候).
Collecting and studying data from Qomolangma is not easy. But the data will give valuable information about the condition of local glaciers (冰川) and mountain snow. The water from the glaciers and mountain snow has been the source (源头) for over 10 main rivers in Asia and it has fed more than 2.5 billion people.
It will also help scientists study and understand the global monsoon system (全球季风系统), so experts can make proper decisions about climate change and sustainable (可持续的) development.
With the efforts of Chinese government and many years’ hard work by scientists, China has become a global front-runner in fields related to the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

②Growing Aloe Vera plants at home can make the air clean and fresh. Studies have shown that they give off oxygen (氧气) and take away harmful things from the air. With clean and fresh air, you are more likely to stay away from colds, sore throats and dry coughs. And even if you do get sick, Aloe Vera plants may help you get better from the illness faster.
③Did you know that Aloe Vera plants can be used as medicine? Aloe Vera gel (胶体) helps to deal with the pain of burns. And it also helps with itchiness (痒) caused by insect bites. To get this gel, just cut off a part of the plant, peel it, and put the gel on the affected skin (患处). This easy-to-get and safe-to-use medicine is available to you all year round.
④Apart from medical use, Aloe Vera plants are also popular in food industry. Whether you are interested in Aloe juice or crazy about Aloe yogurt, you’ll easily find them in the supermarket. Aloe Vera can also go with other vegetables to make a safe dish on your dinner table.
⑤ __________ They like dry, warm air with bright light, so they grow best when placed near a window. Aloe Vera plants are able to keep water in their leaves. So, they do not need to be watered so often as most houseplants. Just wait until the earth is completely dry before you water them. When watering, make sure the earth is wet enough so that it can last for a long time. That’s all you need to do to take care of an Aloe Vera plant. Isn’t it the perfect plant for lazy and forgetful gardeners?

Infinicycle Infinicycle is a 3D printing robot that chews up plastic bottles. Then, it melts the things and uses the melted plastic to make new things. When you are done with those plastic things, you can drop them back into use again. For now, Infinicycle only works with plastics labeled with recycling number 1, meaning clear plastic bottles. At a school in Texas, students used the robot to turn lunchroom waste into new desks and chairs.
Trashbot This smart trashcan includes two boxes, one for rubbish and one for recycling. When someone puts a thing in, Trashbot uses cameras and sensors to know the differences between rubbish and recyclable things and drops it into the correct box. The robot picks correctly 90 percent of the time. Trashbots have been used at a mall in Australia and an airport in the US.
Dustcart Recycling trucks are noisy, dirty and huge. It takes up lots of space on crowded city streets. However, this roving robot comes when called to carry away rubbish. They play a big role in our lives these days. What can they do? They can do many different kinds of work. They can do the same work over and over again and they never feel tired or bored. Sometimes they do some dangerous and difficult work such as exploring(探索)outer space. In the future, fewer people will do such dangerous and simple jobs.
Robots don’t have the same brains(大脑)as humans, but they can do the same things as we do. Many robots can also move like people, but they don’t have any senses(感知)and it will be very difficult to make them really think like a human. Then how do they work? Well, they have computers to control(控制)their bodies.
Robots are becoming smarter and smarter day by day. In the future, they will be just like the ones in movies. Maybe they will be able to walk and speak like humans in 25 to 50 years. However, will they become smarter than us? The answer is “No.” Because we always have new ideas, but they don’t.
We never know what will happen in the future! But whatever robots will be like in the future, I think they will only be our servants. So we needn’t worry about the future.

【推荐1】Teach your child about safety.
When you teach safety rules to your little child, it will help if you provide clear reasons for the rules. Try to help your four-year-old child understand that these rules are not used to spoil his fun, but to keep him safe. The fairer your rules seem to your child, the more likely he is to follow them.
Try to avoid scaring them. The reason why you don’t want your child to climb up onto the top of the tree is not “You’ll fall off the tree and break your neck and die”. but “If you do fall off the tree, you’ll get hurt.” If you exaggerate possible dangers, your child will not believe that your rule is serious.
When your child doesn’t follow your safety rules, you need to make him see that unsafe behavior is dangerous. If your child runs out into the street, you should immediately pull him back, repeat your rules, explain your rules and warn him not to do it again.
If your child then repeats the unsafe behavior, you should let him know the connection between his action and the results. In the example above, you might make him come back right away. “I told you that you can’t run in the street. It’s not safe. If you can’t play outside safely, you can’t play outside.”
If your safety rules seem fair to your child, he will probably be ready to follow them and even accept them as his own rules. And they will gradually become his safety habits and part of his developing consciousness.

【推荐3】How green are you? Do you know how to be green?
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.
Reduce
Reduce means “use less”. Don’t waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is necessary or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.
Reuse
Reuse means “use again”. Use things as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can. It’s bad to throw them away and buy new ones. Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. It’s better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
Recycle
Recycle means “change things into something else”. Though it takes energy to change something into something else, it’s better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighbourhood and take part in recycle programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.
So please remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Don’t waste things. | B.Always throw old things. |
C.Always buy new things. | D.Buy many things from abroad. |
A.Because you can burn them. | B.Because you can use them again. |
C.Because you can throw them again. | D.Because you can change them into something else. |
