Harry and Annie lived a mile from town, but they walked there to school every day. It was a pleasant walk around the pond (池塘) on their way to school. In winter, when the ice was thick and hard, they went across the pond. But their mother did not like them to do this unless someone was with them.
“Don’t go across the pond today, children,” she said, as she kissed them goodbye one morning. “It is beginning to thaw.”
“All right, mother,” said Harry, not very happy, because he was very fond of running and sliding on the ice.
When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe.
“There,” Harry said to his sister, “let’s slide over it.”
“But you promised mother,” said Annie.
“No, I didn’t. I only said ‘All right’, and it is all right.”
“I didn’t say anything, so I can do as I like,” said Annie.
So they stepped on the ice and started to go across the pond.
They had not gone far before the ice gave way, and suddenly they fell into the water.
A man who was at work near the pond heard the shouts of the children and rushed into the water to save them. Harry managed to get out without any help, but poor Annie nearly died before the man could reach her.
They went home almost frozen and learned a lesson they would remember for a lifetime.

As soon as we walked into the butterfly(蝴蝶)museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies. They all flew with their colourful wings. My girls were jumping up and down, and I knew we made the right decision(决定)to come to the museum. They were having so much fun.
I turned to our guide(导游)and asked, “How long do butterflies live?” She said, “For about ten days.”
“What can butterflies do in ten days?”
The guide stopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.” After we said goodbye, I thought about what the guide said. She was right. We all have something to offer(给予)the world with the time we have. If we spend the time doing many things for others, we all can make the world a better place.
Live like a butterfly. You can have your own way of making the world better.

When the storm is coming, the eagle will fly high to the sky and wait for the winds to come.
When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages (肆虐) below, the eagle is soaring above (在……上飞翔) it. The eagle does not run away from the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.
When the storms of life come upon us – and all of us will experience them – we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward life. The storms do not have to overcome (战胜) us. We can make use. We must believe of the great power deep in our hearts to lift us above them and that we can overcome all the storms. The winds of the storm can bring sickness, sadness, failure and disappointment in our lives, but we can soar above the storm by riding them.
Remember, it is not the burdens (负担) of life that matter, but how we deal with them.

That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our “second nature”. Because our habits become our character (性格) and our character becomes our life.
