Questions about the “main idea” of a passsage are popular on reading comprehension tests. Sometimes those questions are pretty difficult to answer. Many students are not completely sure they understand what the main idea really is. Finding the main idea of a passage is one of the most important reading skills to master. Try these tips to find the main idea of passage.
Read the passage through completely, then try to identify the topic. Who or what is the paragragh about? This part is just figuring out a topic like “cause of World War I”. Don’t worry about deciding what argument the passage is making about this topic.
After reading the passage, summarize it in your own words in one sentence. If you have just ten to twelve words to tell someone what the passage is about--- -what should you say?
Authors often put the main idea in or near either the first or last sentence of the paragraph or article. Be careful: sometimes the author will use words like but, however, in contrast, etc. that show the second sentence is actually the main idea. If you see one of these words, that is a clue (线索) that the second sentence is the main idea.
If you read through a passage and you have no idea how to summarize it because there is so much information, start looking for repeated words, phrases, or relaeted ideas. Sometimes an author does not state the main idea directly. This requires the reader to look closely at specific words or sentences that are used and repeated ---- to infer what the author is communicating.
A.It will need those details to support the arguement. |
B.Look for repetition (重复) of ideas. |
C.Identify (确认) the topic. |
D.Look at the first and last sentences of the passage. |
E.How to find the main idea |
F.Summarize the passage. |
World Wildlife Day
World Wildlife Day falls on March 3rd every year. It is a global(全球的) celebration of all the wonderful wild animals and plants on the planet. What can we do to make the world a better place for them?
You can visit your local wildlife center and plants garden. Reading books about wildlife is also a good choice. If you see local wildlife, remember to take a picture of them and learn more about them.
If you find a wild animal or plant somewhere, you will probably feel so excited that you can’t help bringing it home. They may die if you do. Wild animals and plants need to stay in their home environment. So take a picture of it instead.
It’s fun to feed wild animals. However, some animals can get sick from eating human food. Others may become dependent on your food and forget how to look for food by themselves. What’s worse, they might get yourself hurt while getting food from you.
You might lead wild animals into a dangerous situation when you throw food waste or other rubbish on the road. Wild animals may walk to dangerous roads to get their dinners but lose lives in the end.

However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source (资源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we don’t recycle much of the plastic we use. In 2006, Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.
So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a recycling bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.
