Though there will be 10 billion (十亿) people by 2055 in the world, the population isn’t the only problem to get enough food.
In 1950, there were much more farms around the world. As cities get bigger and bigger, there are fewer farms now. So many people try growing food in big cities. You can now find urban (城市的) farms all over the world. Urban farms are places where people grow food together. Sometimes they are on a tall building or in a city park.
Some of the plants grow on the outside of the buildings. A large building in The Hague, Netherlands, is a creative example of urban farming. It is full of empty offices. Now the building is the home of the Urban Farm de Schilde. This farm grows food on the top of the building.
At the same time, there is a fish farm at the bottom of the building. Many schools also have their own gardens. These gardens have some advantages for students. They offer a chance for students to connect with nature. Students can learn about science while they grow vegetables and fruit. They can also learn how to work together. Besides, the experience of planting and caring can develop students’ sense of responsibility (责任), as well as encourage healthy eating habits.
Starting a farm or a garden is a hard task, but it can also help many people.
1. What will the population of the world be by 2055?2. Why do people start to grow food in big cities?
3. Where may we find urban farms in the city?
4. What is at the bottom of the building in Paragraph 3?

【推荐3】The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure(失败), and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after? Failure. It seems that one cannot exist(存在)without the other.

In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes.

【推荐1】Some children do too much homework. According to data from the US Department of Education, if you spend more than two hours doing your homework, it can be bad for your marks.
Researchers looked at the math scores of students in the eighth grade and the amount of homework they did. Then the results were compared with similar studies of homework in other countries. They expected the results to be similar around the world but they weren’t.
In the US scores are the best for students when they do about one hour of homework each night. When they keep studying for two or more hours, their marks begin to fall.
In Japan when students study for more than two hours their marks start going down—but only slightly (轻微地).
Canadian students seem to benefit from between one and two hours of homework— but when they do more, they don’t manage to improve their results. They are about the same as when they work for only one hour!
German students get higher marks when they do two to three hours of homework a night, but risk getting lower scores when they do three or more hours.
The conclusion (结论) seems to be that you should avoid spending too much time on your homework.

The name “orangutan (红毛猩猩)” means “man of the forest” in the Malay language. A century ago, there were about 230,000 orangutans in the wild, but now there are only about 112,000. They are in danger.
People have cut down the forests so it’s hard for orangutans to find wild fruit they feed on. People also kill many orangutans. So many baby orangutans do not have mums to teach them what they need to know.
That’s why an animal organization (组织) called Four Paws built schools for orangutans. The schools teach baby orangutans how to live in the wild.
Orangutans go to different schools. Usually the youngest babies go to the Nursery (育儿所). People feed them and look after them all day long. When the orangutans are 2, they go to Baby School. They learn how to climb trees and look for food. When they turn 4 years old, they go to Forest School. They stay in the forest at night. Now they can do more without help from people.
After a few years, the orangutans have learned everything they need to know. People take them into the forest and let them go.
The orangutans will grow in the forest. Maybe one day they will have babies. They can teach them everything they learned at orangutan schools.
1. How many orangutans are there in the wild now?2. What do orangutans feed on?

A recent research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes. The research comes because educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like P.E. class.
Researchers go over the results of fourteen studies. Twelve were from the United States, one from Canada and one from South Africa. The studies appeared between 2009 and 2013. They included more than 5,000 children, aged six to eighteen.
Thomas Singh, one of the researchers, says the studies showed a relationship between physical activity and scores on subjects such as Math, English and reading. Mr. Singh offers some possible explanations(解释):
There are, first, physiological(生理的)explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen(氧气)to the brain. Being physically active means there are more hormones(荷尔蒙)produced like endorphins(脑内啡). And endorphins make your stress level lower and your mood improved, which means you will perform better in class. Also, students who take part in organized sports learn rules and how to follow them. This could improve their classroom behavior and help them know what they should do.
All in all, the finding tells us that physically active kids are more likely to do better in school. Mr. Singh says schools should consider the finding before they cut physical education programs.
1. What led the researchers to do the studies?2. How many countries took part in the studies?
3. How old were the children included in the studies?
4. Who offers some possible explanations about the relationship between physical activity and students’ classroom behavior?

Nowadays students’ physical fitness is declining year by year. I think there are some reasons.
These days many people volunteer to take part in a campaign (行动) called “Eat Up All On Your Plate”. It’s against wasting food. The volunteers try to ask people around them to save food while eating out or at home.
The campaign set up online in January and since then thousands of people have answered the call. Many restaurants have joined the program and promised they will encourage customers not to order too much food and ask them to take home what they can’t finish in the restaurants .
We have seen many photos and videos that show almost full plates of food was put into trashcans (垃圾桶) in some restaurants. It is said that 50 million tons of food is wasted in China every year, and it is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Many people have a bad habit of entertaining (款待) guests with more than enough food. They believe that their guests won’t feel good if there is no food left on the table. People need to change it. In many western countries people think that it is not polite to force guests to eat more than they are comfortable with or to waste food. Even if one is rich, ordering more than one can eat is a bad way to show off one’s wealth.

In the past five years, about 2.8 billion school textbooks were sold every year, with total spending of 20 billion yuan, news magazine Outlook Weekly reported. If these textbooks are reused for one year, the costs saved can be used to help build around 40,000 Hope Schools in poor areas. Zhao Dehua, from a recycling company, said many college students sold their textbooks at a low price of 1 yuan per kilogram. As these textbooks are mostly used to produce recycled paper, the cost is even higher than new paper.
At present, schools start to reuse free textbooks of music, art and P.E. But it is just a small part of the total number of textbooks. Because there isn’t a good plan or service supporting way for the second-hand textbooks, most of them end up as waste. “Every year, second-hand booksellers collect textbooks at a price of about 4,000 yuan a ton. It is more than twice the price of common waste paper. But the number of people who come to collect second-hand books is still small.” Zhao Dehua said. Therefore, it’s necessary for us to find a good way to reuse the textbooks. It can not only reduce the waste but also help to develop students’ sense of environmental protection.
1. How many school textbooks were sold in the past five years?2. Where does Zhao Dehua work?
3. Which kind of textbooks are reused by schools now?

You don’t know me unless you read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huck’s my name, Huckleberry Finn. That book ends like this: my best friend, Tom Sawyer, and I found $12,000 in gold in a cave. We became rich. We got $6,000 each.
My mother died long ago and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was always drunk and he often beat me. Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas took me into her home to live. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. She sent me to school every day.
I hated those new clothes. I missed my old life. I put on my old clothes and ran away and was free and happy, but Tom Sawyer found me and said that if I wanted to join his club, I would have to return to live with the widow. For this reason, I returned to live with her.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside the widow’s house. My heart jumped. Pap!
“He’s heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it!”
When I lit my candle and went up to my room that night, there sat Pap—his own self! I expected to be scared of him now, but I wasn’t. I stood looking at him; he set there—looking at me.
Pap was nearly fifty years old. His black hair was long and uncombed and dirty. He had allowed hair to grow on his face, which was ghostly white. Just looking at the ugly white skin made me feel sick. His clothes? —dirty and torn. His feet showed through large holes in his shoes. His hat was on the floor—an old black hat with a large hole in it.
