Should I worry about skipping breakfast (不吃早饭)?
Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? It probably depends on what you’re doing for the rest of it. Before the industrial revolution (工业革命), most people had leftovers or nothing for breakfast. Edward Bernays created a marketing project in the 1920s that made eggs and bacon a common breakfast choice. But in today’s world, fewer people work physically challenging jobs, so is it still necessary to begin the day with a protein-rich (富含蛋白质的) meal or a bowl of porridge? Does it matter if you don’t and might there actually be health benefits to breaking your fast later in the day?
First, let’s hear from the breakfast supporters. Some studies suggest that breakfast-skippers have a risk of heart disease and high blood sugar, across a range of populations around the world. At the same time, other studies show breakfast-skippers are more likely to choose poorer foods throughout the day which makes sense, as skipping breakfast seems to keep levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin (饥饿激素) high, while the satiety hormone leptin (饱腹感激素瘦素) stays suppressed.
Breakfast eaters often have healthier habits, but not always. What if some people really care about their health but choose to skip breakfast? Well, actually...
“Skipping breakfast can be described as a kind of ‘time-restricted feeding (限时进食)’, as you reduce the ‘window’ when you can eat, ” says the nutritionist (营养学家) Drew Price. “If I was working with someone who wanted a breakfast-skipping-type plan, then I would be paying more attention than ever to what they are eating to make sure they get enough protein, healthy fats and other beneficial nutrients. However, skipping breakfast isn’t suitable for everyone, especially those people with disordered eating, certain health conditions, and those who are young or elderly, for whom balanced energy intake is important.”
What should you do then? Just eat in the way that lets you make the most healthy choices, most long-lastingly. If that means a couple of fried eggs and some vegetables at 7 a.m., great, but if all you need to make it to 11 a.m. is a strong cup of coffee, don’t worry about it too much. Oh, and if a bowl of porridge can help guide you away from your basic needs, then go for it—we can all use a bit of help in the morning, after all.

The Guardian changed its wording, using “global heating” instead of “global warming” after scientists found that Earth’s temperature might rise between 2.5 ℃ and 4.5 ℃. There had been a goal to keep the rise within 2 ℃.
It’s true that “global heating” is—in terms of language—a simple phrase. But it sends out plenty of messages. With “global warming”, we’re still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, while entering the state of “global heating” is like heading to a point where the nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral(珊瑚)will die, polar bears will lose their living places completely, and bad weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen more often. Decades ago, the impacts(影响)could be seen as a problem for future generations, but now it’s definitely our issue(问题). There is no doubt that we’re entering a state of “climate emergency”.
However, knowing these messages is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution—if there are any solutions left to find. “We have no time to waste,” said the UK’s Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He suggested that we should take rapid action now.
Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.

There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! But after a careful check, you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine(咖啡因)in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, student busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.
Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee(国际奥委会)has limited its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems. Scientists say that teenagers should be stopped from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.
So we should stay away from the energy drinks to keep healthy.

【推荐3】Dr. Joseph Dituri, also known as “Dr. Deep Sea”, had an amazing adventure. For 100 days, the University of South Florida teacher lived underwater. He set a new world record, beating the old record of 73 days.
Dr. Dituri began the project on March 1, 2023. His goal was to stay for 100 days at a special underwater hotel called Jules’s Undersea Lodge. The hotel is 22 feet (6.7 meters) under the ocean surface in a protected area in Key Largo, Florida, US.
The farther you go below the ocean’s surface, the greater the pressure. Dr. Dituri wanted to learn how this pressure affects the human body over time. In his undersea room, Dr. Dituri was living with pressure that was about 66 percent greater than the pressure on the surface.
Dr. Dituri believes that high pressure could help people live longer and stay healthier as they get older. It could also help doctors treat different medical problems, including brain injuries. Dr. Dituri’s room was only 100 square feet (9.3 square meters). But it had somewhere to sleep, a small living room and a kitchen.
While underwater, Dr. Dituri stayed busy. He often exercised in the morning. He taught his college classes and had online chats with over 5,500 students from 15 different countries and regions.
On June 9, 2023, Dr. Dituri returned to the surface where he could finally see the sun again. Doctors quickly checked that he was okay. “The human body has never been underwater that long,” Dr. Dituri said. “This experience has changed me in an important way.”
