He made a necklace(项链) for his mother that everyone admired. They were surprised to learn that Tom had made it for her. Why not make more necklaces and sell them?
“OK,” said Mary, “The first thing you need to do is to work out how much you have now.”
“I have $20. 00 in the bank, and $7.25 in my room,” explained Tom.
“That gives you a total of $27. 25,” said Mary, “That is called your capital(本金). The next thing you need to know is how much it will cost you to make each necklace.”
“Well, the pet shop will give me all the feathers the birds lose. I’ll have to buy the beads (小珠子)and string,” said Tom.
Mary wrote on the piece of paper:
CAPITAL $27.25 EXPENSES Feathers no cost String for 10 necklaces $2.50 Beads for 10 necklaces + $15.00 Total $17.50 |
“How much do you think you can sell such a necklace for?” asked Mary.
“Hmm,” Tom looked thoughtful and said, “There’s a shop in town that sells almost the same kind of necklace for $7.50. If I charge(要价)$6. 00, people will think that’s abargain.”
“OK. If you sell each necklace for $6, you’ll make a good profit(利润)on each then,” said Mary.

I'm a virus (病毒) for the common cold. It has been a long time since I infected (感染) humans last time. Today I tried to infect a boy in a primary school all day.
His name is Sam. I waited on his desktop, and when he touched the desk I jumped on his finger. Unluckily, Sam didn't touch his eyes, mouth or nose. Then, right after class, he washed his hands. Now I'm full of soap and sitting in a sink!
Tuesday, January 22nd
This morning I jumped into the nose of Sam's best friend, Bill. Unluckily, the mucus (粘液) in his nose caught me. I thought it was over for me, when suddenly Bill sneezed while he was talking to Sam.
I knew that would send me right into Sam's face! However, Sam quickly gave Bill a tissue, and Bill sneezed into that instead! Infecting people is harder than I imagined.
Wednesday, January 23rd
I'm feeling very unhappy today. Some scientists caught my friend Harry and put him under a microscope. Harry is a flu virus and he's a dangerous little guy. Besides, Sam at all his vegetables today. He's exercising, and he's getting eight hours of sleep every night. His body is too strong for me!
Thursday, January 24th
I tried to infect Sam again today, but he washed his hands five times and never touched his face! He also gave tissues to every student in his class who was sneezing. It's impossible to give him a cold! So I have to give up and I'm moving to another school.

One day at noon, a 10-year-old boy was walking along the street with his uncle. Suddenly, the boy disappeared—he fell into manhole (井). His uncle called for help, but it was too late. The boy was already dead. There should have been a cover over the manhole, but it had been removed. This tragedy (悲剧) happened in Wuhan last year. And it was not the only one.
The theft (偷窃) of manhole covers has been a big problem in China. According to CCTV News, there were over 70 injuries or deaths due to broken or stolen manhole covers from 2017 to 2019. To prevent such tragedies Chinas’ top judicial (司法) bodies introduced strict punishments in April or those who remove or damage manhole covers. The maximum sentence (最高刑罚) is the death penalty (死刑), Xinhua reported.
“This move will better ensure people’s safety when walking on roads or driving,” Xu Hao, a lawyer from the Beijing Jingshi Law Firm, told China Daily.
“Many of those who have stolen manhole covers have done so in order to sell them for scrap (废弃的) metal. Some taxi drivers have also removed the covers to get water to clean their cars, China Daily noted. If people know removing manhole covers will be seriously punished, it is possible that it will happen less often and prevent tragedies,” Xu added.
In fact, this kind of theft doesn’t only happen in China. The problem is also common in other developing countries. For example, people in India also suffer from manhole cover theft, as the covers can also be sold for scrap metal there. The country has huge need for metals that are used in industries like construction (建筑), Vox reported.

Eat and drink properly
What is healthy to eat in summer? Fresh and light food. Fish can be a good choice. It can keep your body energetic and help fight against the burning sun. Another good choice is colourful fruit and vegetables. They not only lease our eyes, but are full of healthy chemicals(化学物质). Tomatoes can help protect your skin against sunburn. Blueberries are good for your brain and eyes. The more colour, the better!
With all those summertime activities you will be thirsty. What to drink? Water. Water has zero calories(卡路里) and is the perfect drink to stop your thirst(口渴). Try not to drink too many energy drinks, sports drinks and soda drinks which have lots of sugar and caffeine(咖啡因) in them.
Stay active and cool
Summer is a great season to enjoy outdoor activities and play. It's also a good time to lose weight. If you are lucky enough to be near a body of water, try water sports like swimming, surfing, water skiing and so on. These sports keep you cool and active at the same time. You'll have no problem beating the heat and keeping fit as well.
Be careful of the sunshine
Summer allows us more chances to get outside, but it also means more possibilities to get burnt by the sunshine. If you are going outside, keep away from the sun when it's the strongest—usually between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you have to stay in the sun for a long time, sunscreen(防晒霜), a big hat and a longsleeve jacket will be necessary.
