Many students have problems with grammar, speaking or writing when preparing for tests, but vocabulary is the most common one. Maybe we can make it if we can get some new ways to memorize new words. One way you can have a try is “structured reviewing”.

What is “structured reviewing”?

Structured reviewing means continuous (持续的) reviewing of what we have learned in order to better understand it. We all agree that people forget information they have learned if they don’t review it in time.

How do we use it?

Learn five new words every day. We can learn five different sentences with a new word in each sentence. On the first day in the early morning, we can write them down a few times while reading them aloud so that we can memorize them. Moreover, we need to review them six times a day, including after the first lesson, after lunch at the school and after dinner.

On the second day in the early morning, we get over the first day’s sentences. Then we learn five new sentences with five new words just as we did the day before.

For each day’s sentences, after we have reviewed them for five continued days. We just need to review them once a week. Then once a month. Through this method, we’ve stored them in our long-term memory and will never forget them.

Steps of “Structured Reviewing”

Many of us usually learn isolated (孤立的) words from the word list in our textbook, so we often write sentences with mistakes because we don’t know how to use the words. We should make up our own sentences with new words and read them aloud. In this way, we can remember the new words better than those who learn the words separately and silently.

     Lastly, you should use your eyes in right ways. For example, if a small thing goes into your eye you start rubbing it, which is wrong. Rubbing is harmful (有害的) to your tiredness. Remember to use sunglasses to stop the sunshine from shining directly into your eyes. Too much reading, writing, watching television or working on the computer can also cause eye tiredness, so a good rest is required.

When you sleep, can you realize that you are dreaming? If yes, then you are having a lucid dream (清醒梦). This is hard for most people to do. Only some people are able to do this. Now, scientists have found ways to help more people have lucid dreams, Live Science reported.

A professor from the University of Adelaide (阿德莱德) in Australia found that certain skills are key to helping people have lucid dreams.

First, people train themselves to find out whether they are dreaming or not. People can practice a trick for this in real life. For example, someone may look at a clock, look away, and then look back. The time should stay the same. Then, they might dream about this trick while sleeping. But in their dream, the time on the clock might change very quickly. So people know they are dreaming.

Another trick is to wake up after five hours of sleep. Then, stay awake for a while. During this time, repeat the words, “The next time I’m dreaming, I will remember that I’m dreaming.” Then, go to bed again to have rapid eye movement (REM,快速眼球运动) sleep. In REM sleep, people are more likely to know they are dreaming.

Scientists found that those who used these tricks had a 17 percent success rate (几率) for having lucid dreams. This was far higher than if they did nothing.

In a lucid dream, people might study a hobby and then become better at that hobby in real life, according to Denholm Aspy, the professor from the University of Adelaide. For example, you might learn to play the piano in a lucid dream. Then,you might play the piano better in real life!
