A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest (牧师) were out for a Sunday afternoon flight on a small plane. Suddenly, the plane had engine trouble. It started to go down. At last, the pilot took a parachute (降落伞) and shouted to the four people that they had better jump, and then he himself jumped out. Unluckily, there were only three parachutes left.

The doctor took one and said, “I’m a doctor. I save lives, so I must live.” Then he jumped out.

The lawyer then said, “I’m a lawyer, and lawyers are the smartest people in the world. I must live.” He also took a parachute and jumped out.

The priest looked at the little boy and said, “My son, I’ve lived a long and full life. You are still young. Take the last parachute and live in peace.”

Watching their helpless son struggling for a bare subsistence(在死亡线上挣扎), the woman’s and her husband’s hearts were broken. The woman decided to ask the doctor to dinner. The invitation was sent to him yesterday. In reply she received a letter which was impossible to read.

“I must know whether he has accepted or not.” said Mrs South.

“If I were you,” suggested her husband. “I should take it to a chemist(药剂师). He can always read doctors’ letters, however badly written.”
