It’s easy to see the fun in buying a huge ice cream or going shopping with friends, but saving money can be even more exciting. That’s because saving creates chances and opens the door to all kinds of adventures.
The key to successful saving is setting a goal. Get a pen and paper, and write down how much it costs, then work out how much you can afford to save each week and how long it will take you to reach your goal. It’s important to be realistic (现实的) because you’ll soon get bored if you plan to save every single penny. Some weeks you might decide to save a little more than planned so that you can reach your goals even faster.
To avoid accidentally spending your savings, it’s a good idea to keep them separate from the rest of your money. You could do this by using a money box or a savings account (账户).
When you save your money in a savings account, you have the chance to earn interest (利息). This is money that a bank pays you for leaving the money there. Some parents set up a savings account because they want to put some money away for their kids’ future.
Once you konw about saving, you can set some more bigger goals. Perhaps you want to start saving for university, or you’d like to travel the world when you finish school.
If you’re new to saving, start off by thinking of some fun goals, like taking a vacation or going to a concert. Every penny you save brings you one step close r to reaching your goal—and what could be more exciting than that?

People volunteer in many different ways—many people help friends, neighbors, or strangers they happen to meet, but others want to help in a more traditional way. In the US, many people volunteer through their churches, or through their activities. Others volunteer with local organizations which help people, animals, the communities, or the environment. These organizations often put up notices to let people know about what they are doing. In the UK, there are volunteer centers in most cities and large towns, and these centers help people to find volunteer chances. In both countries, some people choose to volunteer abroad, where they may share their skills, knowledge, or even teach English.
In Canada, the UK, and the US, many high school students volunteer as a way to find out what kind of work they might enjoy in the future. How much pocket money do you get from your parents every month? What do you often do with your money?
We asked three British middle school students for their opinions on pocket money.
Ruth Sawyers:
I get 5 pounds every week from my parents. I usually save 1.5 pounds and spend the rest.
The two things I usually like to buy with my pocket money are story books and Lego Blocks (乐高). I don’t really think about getting more pocket money. And I even don’t talk about pocket money with my friends at school. If some people’s parents give them too much pocket money, other children might get jealous (嫉妒). It’s important not to show off what you’ve got.
Maya Varsani:
I get 6 pounds from my mum and 8 pounds from my dad every month. I try to save and buy presents for my family. Last year, I bought my mum a lipstick (口红) for Mother’s Day, which cost 9.5 pounds.
Jimmy Segalow:
My mum gives me 10 pounds a week. She says I can either spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she will make me a packed lunch, then I can spend the 10 pounds on whatever I want.
I like Nike trainers. If they cost 50 pounds and I only have 40 pounds, my mum might give me an extra (额外的) 10 pounds. But I have to do some housework instead.
I know that some parents can’t afford to give their children much pocket money. So I try not to talk about my pocket money at school.

Smartest ways to count costs
Money makes the world go around, but the best things in life are free. A penny saved is a penny earned, but you get what you pay for. You probably have your own ideas about spending money. Now is a great time to learn how to spend money wisely.
When you are considering buying something you want, run through this checklist first.
· How much do you really want it?
Seeing a $ 25 (172 yuan) gum ball (口香糖球) machine, Ben wanted it. But after thinking about it, he decided that it would be exciting only for a day or two. “Besides, it’s not possible for me to chew that much gum,” he said wisely.
· Do you still want it a week later?
If the thing passes the “really-wanting-it” test, try to wait for some time to see how strong the desire (欲望) is. This strategy works for grown- ups, too!
· How will you pay for it?
After the first two steps, Ben found he really wanted a toy pirate ship, but it cost $50. He had $22 in his pocket and got $1.50 a week to spend. His mother helped him work out. But how many weeks he would need to save to get the ship.
· Are there ways to earn the money?
Ben agreed to wash the downstairs windows at a price of a dollar for each. So he got $10 for himself and sparkling (闪亮的) sunlight for the rest of the family.
. Can you get it cheaper?
After deciding to buy it, it is necessary for you to look for less expensive ways to buy it: search for what you want on the Internet or in shops and flea markets (跳蚤市场). Sometimes you can find the same thing at a much lower price.
If these suggestions work well, they can save you a lot of money. You will be a really smarts hopper.
