In the woods stood a nice little pine tree (松树) named Dew. The place he had was good. The sun shone on him and around him grew many other large trees.
However, he always had a lot of regrets, which made him feel unhappy. For example, he was sad because he wasn’t as tall as others or didn’t have many friends like others.
One day, many young trees were cut down and taken out of the woods. A bird told Dew “They will be made into beautiful wood carvings (木雕) for people to watch.” The little pine tree wished to join them one day. The next year, Dew’s dream to be made into a wood carving came true. He appeared at a party and got lots of people’s praises for his beauty. Dew enjoyed the happy time and hoped it would last forever. But he was wrong. Two days later he was thrown into a dark corner because it took too much space.
Days and nights passed, and nobody came up. It seemed as if the little tree had been completely forgotten. “Oh, how happy I was in the woods. Only I didn’t know that!” said Dew.
After thinking for many days, Dew said to himself, “________________”

Wilderness survival (荒野求生) skills were necessary in the past, but now, people hardly use them. Teachers at the Deep Green Bush-School in New Zealand think this might not be right. What if one day people have to live a primitive (原始的) life? So, the school hardly teaches reading, writing or maths classes. Instead, students go out to learn how to find food, cook and learn about plants and animals.
Teachers and students at the school believe that if you can survive in the wild, you can survive anywhere. But are these wilderness survival skills really important? After all, we now live in a modern world.
In today’s world, people need to learn many other skills to be successful, such as how to find a job, drive a car or speak a foreign language. It seems that most of us don’t learn survival skills because we don’t need them anymore.
In fact, survival skills change along with time and the development of society. And it’s useful for people to have many skills. So why not learn some wilderness survival skills? At least, you will learn more about nature and yourself.
4. What skills do people hardly use now?(不超过5个词)5. Why do people learn many other skills in the modern world?(不超过10个词)
6. What does the writer want us to do?(不超过10个词)
Recently, a primary school in Changsha, has put Virtual Reality (VR) technology (虚拟现实技术) to good use in an English class. When the students put on the VR glasses, it seemed that they were taken into a new world where they could see for themselves. They could enjoy the views along the way, allowing more knowledge to be kept in mind.
VR language learning is now starting to be widely used in many schools. Think of it like this. Now you are learning English in China, you don’t have enough chances to use English if you are not in English classes, but if you learn English in English-speaking countries like America or the UK, it’ll be much easier for you to make progress.
Nowadays, a lot of apps have also been designed to serve VR language learning. The app “House of Languages” is one of them. It is already available (可获得的) on the Samsung (三星) VR. It can sense your movement and the acts of your eyeballs, arms and hands.
When you are learning English in it, a lovely racoon (浣熊) called “Mr. Woo”, will guide you to communicate in English. You can use English by finishing tasks Mr. Woo gives you. For example, you will be asked to find certain things at your home according to the English words that Mr. Woo gives you. After you’ve found these things, you should “take” them, “come back” to Mr. Woo and “give” them to him. Then he will say “thanks” to you. Sometimes, Mr. Woo may have some activities like family party so that you will have more tasks to finish in that situation. You will learn English so quickly that you will even forget you are leaning.
Virtual Reality is showing increasing promise in language education and the day, isn’t far away when it will become one of the main media in education. What about you? Would you learn a new language in Virtual Reality?
7. Recently, VR technology has been put to good use8. In China, if you aren’t in English classes, you don’t
9. What can Samsung VR sense?
10. Who will guide you to communicate in English in the app?
11. Do you like to learn a new language in Virtual Reality? Why or why not?
This spring, the most eye-catching movie might be YOLO (《热辣滚烫》). By March 18, it had made around 3.5 billion yuan at the box office, reported Paper.
Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name of YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea— you only live once.
Jia Ling has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. The movie Hi, Mom (《你好,李焕英》) in 2019 is the first one Jia directed in her life.
Jia didn’t study directing at university. It makes her feel freer in film making because she doesn’t need to follow a fixed style. To everyone’s surprise, Hi, Mom made her the world’s highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023.
Before making YOLO, Jia was often seen as an overweight comedian (喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost more than 50 kg which made it hard to imagine that this is the same Jia we once knew. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they called this a “rebirth” for Jia. She has proved through her actions that if you want to be successful, you need to try your best.
In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of saying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes in purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy into them.” Jia told Xinhua.
“In fact, Jia didn’t change. She’s just being more herself. She shows us through her actions.” said talk show host Chen Luyu.
12. How old is Jia Ling?13. When did Jia Ling become a director for the first time?
14. Was Jia Ling the world’s highest-grossing director before 2023?
15. How much weight did Jia lose for the movie?

Li Shizhen was one of the most famous doctors in Chinese history. He was born in Hubei in 1518. Li Shizhen was born in a family of doctors. His father wrote several books about Chinese medicine. Li Shizhen loved medicine very much at an early age and used to help his father in his medical practice. But at that time, doctors led a difficult life. His father wanted him to be an officer. Li Shizhen studied hard for imperial examination (科举考试), he went to Wuchang three times to take the exams, but failed. When he was 23, he decided to learn medicine from his father. When he was 38, he cured the son of the Prince of Chu and was invited to be an officer in the court. Even though his father’s dream came true, he was unhappy. One year later, he returned to be a doctor again. He found there were some mistakes in the old medical books. So he made up his mind to write a new book in 1552. He overcame many difficulties and finished the book in 1579. Unluckily, Li Shizhen died before the book was officially published. Compendium of Materia Medica (《本草纲目》), with 1.92 million words, is a great medical book.

Drones (无人机) are like planes, but come in many shapes and sizes. They have no pilots and are controlled from outside the drones. During these years, they have been used to attack (进攻) enemies or move goods (货品) in dangerous areas.
Now small drones are a part of people’s lives. For example, people use drones to take photos or make videos. Besides, a drone delivery (投递) service has proved (证明) successful.
Online store JD can use drones to deliver small packages (包裹). It has built several drone stations so that it can load (装载) and deliver its packages.
Drones have made our shopping experience different. We can order a new coat in early morning and it will be delivered before we finish breakfast.
Bizzby Sky, a UK company, has created a delivery service for small goods. Open a smartphone app, enter your address, set a time and pay enough money for the delivery service. Then in minutes, a drone will do tasks for you.

It’s easy to see the fun in buying a huge ice cream or going shopping with friends, but saving money can be even more exciting. That’s because saving creates chances and opens the door to all kinds of adventures.
The key to successful saving is setting a goal. Get a pen and paper, and write down how much it costs, then work out how much you can afford to save each week and how long it will take you to reach your goal. It’s important to be realistic (现实的) because you’ll soon get bored if you plan to save every single penny. Some weeks you might decide to save a little more than planned so that you can reach your goals even faster.
To avoid accidentally spending your savings, it’s a good idea to keep them separate from the rest of your money. You could do this by using a money box or a savings account (账户).
When you save your money in a savings account, you have the chance to earn interest (利息). This is money that a bank pays you for leaving the money there. Some parents set up a savings account because they want to put some money away for their kids’ future.
Once you konw about saving, you can set some more bigger goals. Perhaps you want to start saving for university, or you’d like to travel the world when you finish school.
If you’re new to saving, start off by thinking of some fun goals, like taking a vacation or going to a concert. Every penny you save brings you one step close r to reaching your goal—and what could be more exciting than that?
27. What is the key to successful saving?28. How could you avoid accidentally spending your savings?
29. Why do some parents set up a savings account for kids?
30. If you get pocket money from your parents every week, will you consider setting up a savings account or spending it on things you like? Why? Write 30 words or more.
Like everywhere else around the world, China is going through a digital revolution (数字革命). From buying tickets, ordering food, booking a hotel, to asking for home service, people can get almost everything done just through a smart phone.
However, the old people are being left behind (忽略). To help them adapt to (适应) the digital world, our government has taken some actions.
At an education center in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, some old people are learning how to use smart phones. 70-year-old Zhang Baijun says she is excited to take the lessons. She’s learning how to chat with family and friends, make video calls on WeChat, pay by Alipay and scan health codes (扫描健康码).
“I’m quite interested in online shopping. It seems very convenient (方便的), as everything is online. Next time, I hope they can teach us how to buy things on Taobao,” said Zhang.
The lessons are very popular with the old people. Li Fujiang, a 75-year-old man, said, “I come with my wife together every day. The lessons are very helpful. Both of us have so much to learn, I want to learn how to transfer (转) money and buy train tickets online.”

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, attracts a lot of eyes with a beach clean-up activity. On April 20th, 2024, he and many volunteers started a five-week activity to pick up trash from five beaches along the Southern California coast and even some beaches in Mexico.
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Ryan told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.” He has collected about 2 million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since 2012.
Ryan first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC,太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心) in Laguna Beach, which has been saving and protecting sea animals for more than 40 years. Watching sea animals improve inspired him to think about what he could do to help to save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting trash and bottles for a long time. One day, Ryan knew from the workers in PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not sell them?” he thought. In 2017, Ryan handed a $10,000 check (支票) to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of trash and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for our planet and oceans. He hopes every kid can do something.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, my parents were very busy. And we didn’t have the Internet at home. In order to kill time, I found a pen and some paper, and I just started drawing.
At that time, I thought of drawing as just a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I was able to do what I loved for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends was studying art in the US. She advised me to go to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). That was the only school I applied to (申请) when I had graduated from high school.
Luckily, I was accepted into the RISD. There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused (困惑的). I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to discover my own style.
I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator (插画师) for the past ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’ve also worked with companies like McDonald’s and Apple. Some clients (客户) keep coming back. They love my style.
Whenever I get a new assignment (任务), I read it over a lot of times. I do this to work out what the most important message is that I should be communicating through my work on the project. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while—the best idea often turns up when I am not thinking too hard about things.
I hope I will never lose my excitement and continue to create wonderful things.

“I know, dad, but this one is so shiny and new,” Sophie said.
“It is great, but we have to go,” said her dad.
They left the store. Sophie knew her scooter was nice, and it still worked. She just couldn’t stop thinking of that new scooter!
A few weeks later, Sophie and her dad were back in the store. The scooter was just there, with a big sale sign on it! The girl ran right over to it. Her dad looked at the price.
“I know you’ve been thinking about this scooter a lot, Sophie. The sale price is pretty good, though it’s still a lot of money. I can’t just buy this for you. But what if I pay for part of it, then lend you the money for the rest, and you must pay me back?” her dad asked.
“Really?” Sophie said excitedly. “I promise I will pay you back!”
As they were walking towards the cashier desk (收银台), her dad asked Sophie if she knew what it meant to borrow money.
“Yes, it means that I have to give it back to you,” Sophie answered.
Her dad replied, “You’re right, but you can give it back to me a little at a time. Now you get five dollars a week for your pocket money and of course, you can get more if you do well in your exams or help with some housework. This 12-year-old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean
Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.
Du, 12 years old at the time, tried to solve the problem like any good scientist—first, by doing a little research. That’s how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.
Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem; a remote-operated vehicle(遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water and find plastics on the ocean floor.
The actually cool part of Du’s ROV is the detection(探测) system. She uses a camera along with three different kinds of light to find the plastics. She also uses visible(可见的) light to find unnatural colors that might make the plastics stand out.
“She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it,” says engineer Casey Machado. “It sounds simple, but it’s a level of thinking that’s really amazing. ”
Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.
When asked about future plans, she mentions wanting to address the effects of climate(气候) change. “I think there are a lot of problems that could be solved with new inventions,” says Du.
Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.
“I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems,” says Du. “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”
