Nine Linked Rings Puzzle
The nine linked rings puzzle is usually made up of nine rings connected to a handle (手柄). Players have to unlock all the rings to win the game. It has something to do with maths. If you want to unlock the ninth ring, you have to do the third, fifth, and seventh first, or you won’t make it.

Tangram
A tangram is a puzzle made up of seven pieces of different shapes. For each puzzle, players need to use all the pieces to make different things. To do it, they have to know about geometry (几何) . The game was popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

【推荐1】Do you play video games? If so, you aren't alone. Video games are becoming more common and are increasingly enjoyed by adults. The average(平均)age of gamers has been increasing, and was said to be 35 in 2016. Changing technology also makes it possible for more people to play video games. A new type of casual gamer has appeared, who plays on smart phones and tablets in spare time throughout the day. So, we know that video games are an increasingly common form of entertainment, but do they have any effect(影响)on our brains?

Over the years, the media have been talking about the effect of video games on our health and happiness. "Games have sometimes been praised or criticized. Also, playing video games is a popular activity, so everyone seems to have strong opinions on the topic," says Marc Palaus, who carried out research together with his colleagues. They collected the results from 116 scientific studies, 22 of which looked at structural(结构的) changes in the brain and the rest of which looked at changes in brain functionality(功能).

The research shows that playing video games can alter how our brains perform, and even their structure. For example, playing video games affects our attention, and some studies find that gamers show improvements in several types of attention, such as sustained attention or selective attention.

Video games can also be addictive(使人沉溺), and this kind of addiction is called "Internet gaming disorder". Researchers have found functional and structural changes in the neural system(神经系统)in some people. These neural changes are basically the same as those seen in other addictive disorders.

So, what do all these brain changes mean? "We pay attention to how the brain reacts to video games, but these effects do not always turn to real-life changes." says Palaus."As video games are still quite new, the research is still in its early stage."

1. Why does a new type of casual gamer appear according to Paragraph 1?
A.Because the work pressure becomes bigger.
B.Because video games become more popular.
C.Because people have fewer activities to relax themselves.
D.Because changing technology makes it convenient to play video games.
2. What does the underlined word' “alter” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Change.B.Avoid.C.Doubt.D.Cancel.
3. What did Palaus' research pay attention to?
A.Why video games affect brains.B.When video games affect brains.
C.What effects video games have on brains.D.How video games affect our health.
4. What does Palaus think of video games according to the last paragraph?
A.They can certainly change people's real life.B.Their effects need to be further studied.
C.They can help people feel more relaxed.D.They are really harmful to people.

I worry about my boys. They waste a lot of time in front of the computer playing games. I'd rather they read or ran around outside. How can I limit(限制)the time my children spend playing games?

Mrs Smith

It might be best if you let the kids play games before doing their homework.Research shows that it's not a good idea to play them before going to bed, since they keep the kids from sleeping well, and that playing them after a learning activity can mitigate(减轻)the brain's ability.

Alpreesh

My kids are only allowed to play computer games at the end of the school week and only after they have done their homework. It's very clear to them, and they have accepted the rule happily. We have no more arguments during the week. It's really been good for us.

Cage

I personally find it difficult to set time limits but when they’re on the computer,I get some quiet time. I built and now use a simple timer program that lets me set time limits(like 1 hour each day). The program gives the kids an audible reminder like "5 minutes left", and they have to stop when their time is up. It has ended all the fighting over computer time in our house. You can download it from http://www.TimesUpKids.com.21cnjy.com.

【推荐3】Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is a new trivia quiz(问答) show video game. You can play it on the computers, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.

The game uses the ideas of a TV show. This TV show first appeared in 2007. It tried to test people on information they learned in primary school. Only a few players ever won the big prize of ¥1 million.

There were eleven different questions in the game of the TV show. Two each from first through fifth grade and one from sixth. Every player can ask “classmates” for help three times.

If you need help, you can use a classmate’s answer, ask the class for help, or ask the host for a new question. Every classmate is good at different subjects.
