【推荐2】Nobody likes staying at home on vacation—when the weather is fine. Last August we decided to spend the day in the countryside. The problem was that millions of (数百万) other people had the same idea. We moved out of the city slowly behind a long line of cars, but in the end we came to a quiet country road. After some time, we stopped at a farm near the town. We had carried enough food with us and we got it out of the car. Now everything was ready so we sat down near a path (路) at the foot of the hill. It was very quiet in the cool grass until (直到) we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. What we saw made us pick up (捡起) our things and ran back to the car. There were about two hundred sheep (羊) coming towards us along the path.

Under the Velib scheme(bicycle freedom), people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only 1 euro a day or 29 euros a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kilograms). They are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 metro stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this — not even in France. Many years ago, Lyon started a free bicycle scheme. However, not everybody in Paris thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle; they’ll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all of our traffic problems, of course. But it might reduce pollution levels in the atmosphere. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. Everyone knows about global warming. We know this is partly because rainforests are disappearing, but it’s also because there’s so much pollution in the world. We can help improve the situation right here. The Velib bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”
“There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities,” the spokesman added. “But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise. The problems in our environment will only get worse.”

People are building the Earth but they are also polluting it at the same time. The more people there are, the more pollution we have. People always take away farmlands to build houses or factories. They kill animals to eat them or make money with their fur. They throw waste things here and there and dump waste water into rivers directly.
Now air pollution is still the biggest one in all kinds of pollution. It is bad for all living things. That’s mainly because of the heavy traffic. Some scientists say it will be much better if people ride bikes instead of driving cars. When you are riding, there is no pollution. But in many countries, people don’t want to go to work by bike. It is not because bikes are expensive or people are tired if they ride to work, but because the roads for cars become better than before. More people put away their bikes and go to work by car or by bus. Then things are getting worse and worse.

One of the most serious accidents took place in March. One Sunday afternoon, a boy was riding an ofo bike (共享单车). He was hit by a bus and later died. The boy’s parents were not by his side.
The good news is that Shanghai has been trying to manage bike sharing by making rules. The rules are still being discussed, but some of the rules have been decided on.
However, it could be hard to make these rules work. Ou Jing is ofo’s manager in Shanghai. He said the company had banned (禁止) children under 12 from using its service. Yet, young children can still be seen riding ofo bikes. That’s because many ofo bikes use manual (手动的) locks.
Most of you are old enough to ride a shared bike. Still, please ride slowly for your own safety. When you finish using the bike, don’t forget to park and lock it properly—for everybody’s safety.
A.If a user doesn’t lock the bike properly after using it, anyone can ride it away. |
B.In fact, they are popular not only among adults but also among teens. |
C.All of the children under 12 have stopped riding ofo bikes. |
D.Besides, the boy was considered too young to ride a bike. |
E.For example, only people aged between 12 and 70 can ride shared bikes. |

Being Honest And Loyal
1. Keep your promises. If you say you’ll hang out with a friend, don’t change your mind. If you say you’ll do a friend a favor, be sure to do it. It’s OK to lose a little trust sometimes. But do not make it a regular thing.Your friend won’t trust you anymore if it happens too often.
2. Say you’re sorry if you do something wrong. Don’t act as if you’re perfect. If you’ve done something wrong, admit it.You should really mean it when you say sorry.
3. Talk about your feelings. If something upsets you, don’t be afraid to talk about it. Tell your friend how you feel.
4. Don’t gossip(八卦). If your friend tells you a secret, don’t tell anyone else. Also, don’t spread stories about your friend.
Helping Your Friends
5. Be a good listener. Don’t do all the talking. Listen carefully to what your friend says. Let your friend know you care what he or she thinks.
6. Be there when they need you. If your friend is in the hospital, you should visit him/her. If your friend’s dog runs away, you should help find it. Let your friends know they can count on you. If they’re your true friends, you’ll be able to count on them, too.
7. Give your friend some space.Your friend won’t always want to be with you. You should accept that. Let your friend be alone sometimes. Also, don’t worry if your friends have lots of other friends. It doesn’t mean they don’t care about you.
8. Learn to forgive. You should be able to forgive your friends if they do something that hurts you. First, let them know how you feel. If your friends are sorry for what they did, you should forgive them. Everyone makes mistakes.
9.Stay in touch. If your friends move away, be sure to stay in touch. Write them or call them. They will be very happy to hear from you!

Do you know what kind of common food is good for our eyes? The answer, of course, is carrots which are common in our daily life. However, a new study suggests that besides carrots, grapes are also good for our eyes.
Researchers from the National University of Singapore have found that eating just a few grapes a day can improve our vision (视力). This is especially good for people who are older. Dr. Eun Kim, the lead researcher, said, “Our study is the first to show that eating grapes is good for our eyes, which is very exciting, especially with a growing and ageing population.” Dr. Kim added that grapes were fruits that can easily get. This is good news for people who don’t really like carrots.
The study is published in Food &Function. Thirty-four adults took part in experiments over 16 weeks. Half of them ate one-and-a-half cups of grapes per day. The other half ate a snack (小吃). Dr. Kim did not tell them whether she was testing the grapes or the snack. She thought that not telling this information would give better test results. She found that people who ate the grapes had improved muscle strength (肌肉力量) around the retina (视网膜). The retina passes information about light to the brain. It protects the eyes from blue light which is bad for our eyes. A lot of blue light comes from computers, smartphones and LED lights.
In a word, although food has a certain effect on protecting our eyes, we still need to take good care of them. Let’s start now!

Everyone in China likes dumplings very much, and there are many different kinds of dumplings. Some have beef and vegetables in them, and some have eggs and carrots in them. But I love eating dumplings with vegetables and pork (猪肉).
Usually people make dumplings at home. If you have no time to make them, you can buy them in a supermarket. Then you take them home and eat them with vinegar (醋).
The Spring Festival is very important in China. When it comes, we make dumplings, and usually we put a coin (硬币) in a dumpling. We think that if one eats the dumpling with the coin in it, he can be lucky in the new year.
