Dear Anna, I’m really worried about my daughter. I think some of the older boys in her school are bullying her. Every day she comes home from school in tears(眼泪). And every morning she says she doesn’t feel well because she doesn’t want to go to school. Can you give me some advice? Mary
Hi Mary, I think you should go and talk to your daughter’s head teacher. Bullying is a serious problem in many schools, and every school must have a rule to stop it. Perhaps you could also have a talk with your daughter, and advise ways she could keep away from these boys in her break time. Anna
Dear Anna, My neighbors keep playing loud music late at night. I’ve been there a couple of times to complain(抱怨), and they turn it down for a few minutes. But ten minutes later, they turn it up again. It’s making me very stressed, and my children can’t sleep. What do you think I should do? Michael
Hi Michael, I think you should speak to them one more time. Perhaps you could go during the day, when it’s quiet and you feel calm(冷静). Try to be polite and explain how their music is making you feel and has a bad influence(影响) on your children. Tell them that you would really like to be friendly with them, but if they keep making noise at night, you will call the police. Before you do this, you should write down all the dates and time when your neighbors make too much noise. Anna |

We will live in peace in 2050. Countries won’t fight with each other. We will be able to go on a trip to other planets by spaceship and we will find other planets which humans can live on. We will probably find aliens (外星人)! We will probably be able to see robots everywhere, like at home, in factories, and in hospitals. They will help to make our lives more comfortable.
Steven
I think a lot of things will be different in 2050. But the world will still have a lot of pollution problems. We will need to find other resources (资源) because of the large population (人口). Now the world’s population is about 7.7 billion (十亿) and it will reach about 9.7 billion in 2050. We will also need to build more spaceships to go to the Moon and Mars, because we will have to get resources from these places.
Samuel
In 2050, people will live longer and have fewer health problems. There won’t be any wars (战争). My sister Judy thinks everybody will be able to speak at least five languages and it will be easier for her to visit other countries!

Lisa has been to Antarctica (南极洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.
Tuesday December 2 We planned to go to Rothera (罗瑟拉站) that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all. We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather. It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly. |
Wednesday December 3 After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful. We are staying at Rothera Survey Base (基地) with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today. It is very cold, but the regulars here are often seen walking around in T-shirt. |
Thursday December 4 I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5℃, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course (课程) before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill. |
Saturday December 6 Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery (风景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly and thankfully. |
1. Lisa had a nervous wait in Stanley because of _____________.
A.Strong winds | B.Thick clouds |
C.Mountain of ice | D.Low temperature |
A.December 2 | B.December 3 | C.December 4 | D.December 6 |
A.leave | B.change | C.protect | D.build |
A.People walked around in T-shirt | B.It was a beautiful and quiet place |
C.The weather was sometimes warm | D.The scenery changes every day |
A.Lisa will stay in Rothera Survey Base for about two weeks. |
B.Lisa often sees the people wearing the thick jackets in the base. |
C.Lisa can go snowboarding if she finishes the training course. |
D.Lisa didn’t expect that the mountains of ice could move at first. |
A.notebook | B.diary | C.homework | D.book |
"It's mine," said Fred, showing a pocketknife with a shining blade (刀片) "Just what I've always wanted. "And he turned it over and over with the look of satisfaction on his face.
"I guess I know who owns it," said Tom, looking at it carefully.
"I guess you don't. It isn't Mr. Raymond's," Fred replied quickly.
"I know. Mr. Raymond's is twice as large," said Tom, going on with his drawing.
Tom's doubt was taking away Fred's enjoyment. In fact, Fred was not comfortable with the knife at all, for he felt that he was having something that did not belong to him and he got worried. He even had serious thoughts of burning it, or hiding it, or giving it away; but a better plan hit him.
"Tom," said Fred, one day at break, "didn't you say that you knew who owned the knife?"
"Yes, I did. It looked like Doctor Perry's," Tom ran off to play with others, without giving the knife another thought.
It was Dr. Perry's ! Fred looked at his watch and realized he only had a little time, so he started quickly, and found the old gentleman getting ready to visit a patient. "Is this yours?" cried Fred, in breathless haste, holding up the cause of a week's anxiety.
"It was," said the doctor, "but I lost it the other day."
"I found it," said Fred, "and have felt like a thief ever since. Here, take it. I've got to run. "
"Hold on!" said the doctor. "I've got a new one, and you are quite welcome to this."
"Am I? May I ? Oh! Thank you! Now, I'm the real owner of the knife. What a different feeling!"
1. Tom's doubt made Fred______.A.satisfied | B.worried | C.proud | D.angry |
