Some people believe that humans could live on the planet Mars by the year 2100. Here is what life there could be like.
With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecraft would travel so fast that the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans cannot survive without water, oxygen or food. So far nobody knows whether there would be enough water or oxygen on Mars. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would probably be in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.
Gravity could be another problem. The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth. People would have to wear boots that are specially designed to prevent themselves from floating off into space.
Compared with life on the Earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax.
There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would have a computer at home connected to an interplanetary network. They would study at online schools with “e-teachers”. The “e-teachers” can help with their schoolwork at any time.
A.The food on Mars |
B.Another problem on Mars |
C.The way to Mars |
D.The good things on Mars |

The first floating (漂浮的) city will be in French Polynesia. That’s an island in the South Pacific Ocean. Builders hope to finish much of it by 2022.
This floating city will be near French Polynesia’s shore. Its people will live by the laws of French Polynesia. Other floating cities might be built in the open ocean. These cities could create their own laws. The first floating city will be environmentally friendly. Its energy will be from the sun. People will drink recycled rain and seawater.
Floating cities will be safe from flooding. Built on platforms (平台), they will rise with the sea level. They could be moved, if needed. They would allow more people to live near the ocean. At the beginning, the first floating city will be the same size as a soccer field. Gradually, it will grow into a much larger city with homes, parks, schools, shops and restaurants in it. Short days
Most high schools in Germany begin at about 8:00 a. m. and end at about 3:30 P. m. This means your morning will be busy with classes. You will have time to do homework and take part in private(私人的) clubs after school.
Formal setting
In Germany, teachers and students’ relationship is more formal than you might be used to. Teachers are respected and students must use the formal “Sie(德语,您)” when talking to teachers.
Getting to school
Most students take public transport to school or ride a bicycle. Some areas have school buses. It is not common for parents to drive students to school.
Private clubs
In many countries, schools offer official sports and after-school activities. This is less common in Germany. After-school activities are usually organized through private clubs. There are clubs for things like soccer, dance, choir(合唱队), theatre and almost everything else. Once you are in Germany, ask around at school and talk to other students to find out what private clubs are in your area and meet your interests.

The first group didn’t know the name of the village and how far the village was. They were made to follow the guide. Some people started to complain(抱怨)when they walked halfway(中途). After then, most of them stopped moving on.
The second group were told the name and the distance of the village. When they walked halfway, they still had the courage to keep on. However, while walking to three quarters of the way, some people were tired and bored. They didn’t want to move a step.
Not only had the third group gotten to know the name and distance, but also there were some stones which showed how far they were away from the village. They sang and talked along the way and finally got to the destination.
From the experiment, we found that the first group had the hardest time in reaching the destination because they didn’t know where the village was. For example, if an American boy asks his mother what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say “I'll play it by ear”, that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later. “Play by ear” used to mean playing music using the sheet music(活页乐谱), but now people often use it when they're not talking about music.
There're many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, “Give me a hand”, you don't necessarily reach out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It's not about the color of your hand! You're a green hand when you are very new at your work and don't have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two certainly work together very well.
