Levi Strauss was born in Germany in the mid 1800’s and immigrated(移居) to the United States as a young man. He lived in New York City and learned the dry-goods business for several years. In 1853 he took his knowledge and his dreams to San Francisco (California, USA). His dream to succeed came true over the next 20 years as he became a very successful businessman.
Many of Levi Strauss’ customers were cowboys and miners. They needed clothing that was strong and lasting. Strauss found a special cloth from France that was comfortable and lasted a long time. It was called “serge and mines” which was later shortened to the word “denim(粗棉布)”.
Another man named Jacob Davis bought large amounts of the denim cloth from Levi Strauss. He was a tailor who made pants for hard-working men. One of his customers was continually tearing the pockets off his pants. So Jacob Davis decided to put rivets(铆钉)on certain parts of the pants to make them stronger. The customer loved the new pants so much that he told all his friends, and soon Jacob Davis was busy making lots of pants with rivets.
Jacob Davis soon realized that using rivets was a great business idea, and he didn’t want anybody to steal that idea. He decided that he would need to get a patent. But being a poor tailor, he didn’t have money to pay for the patent. After thinking it over, he went to the businessman Levi Strauss and told him his idea. He said, “If you agree to pay for the patent, we will share the profits from the riveted pants.” Levi Strauss did agree, and the new riveted pant business was called Levi Strauss and Company. Today Levi’s jeans are more popular than ever, and Levi’s name continues to live in.

【推荐2】What was life like in China 3,500 years ago? Was it very different to life now? What did people do? How did they live? Let’s find out.
The Kings
From 1700 until 1100 BC, the area of China around the Yellow River was ruled by a family of kings called the Shang. They were rich and very powerful. The king and his family lived in large beautiful palaces. They had many servants who made them food and did all the work in the palaces, so they had an easy life.
The People
The richest people lived in cities with very high walls. They didn’t work, and spent their time hunting and horse riding. They were good at capturing animals.
Other people lived outside the walls. There were merchants (商人) and craftsmen (工匠), so they worked for their living. They were not poor, but they were not protected during wars.
Most of the people during this time were farmers. They lived in villages in the countryside. They worked in fields with tools made of stone, grew grain such as rice, wheat, and kept animals. The best place for farming was by the Yellow River. Here the warm, wet weather was perfect for growing rice. The farmers lived in small houses made of mud or bamboo. They had to listen to the kings and the rich people all the time and give them food and gifts. They didn’t have a very easy life.

During the time of the Shang, the Chinese discovered how to make bronze (青铜). Bronze is an important metal because it is strong and lasts for a very long time. The Chinese made all kinds of things from bronze, such as pots for cooking, cups for drinking, jewellery and weapons (武器).
But perhaps the most important development during the time of the Shang was writing. With it, people could pass on information about themselves, their lives and what they believed. Although the Chinese started writing at this time, they didn’t have paper yet, so people wrote on animal bones, on bamboo, and even on turtle shells!

【推荐1】Imagine there is a glass of water on a table in front of you. It has water in it but it is not full. How do you describe the glass? Do you say it is half full or half empty?
If you say half full, you might be an optimist(乐观主义者). If you say half empty, you might be the opposite — a pessimist.
A new study suggests that your level of optimism may affect(影响)your health. People who are optimistic may live longer than those who are pessimistic.
Researchers at Harvard University’s School of Public Health in Boston did the study. They compared women with “a general expectation that good things will happen” with women who are less optimistic. They found that the optimists had a much lower risk of getting several deadly diseases, including cancer and heart diseases.
Kaitlin Hagan, a study leader says optimists can take better care of themselves by exercising, eating healthy food and getting enough sleep.
She also says earlier studies show that a person can use simple, low-cost methods(方法)to increase optimism. She says each night we can plan to do two or three simple, enjoyable activities. They might include watching the sunrise, visiting friends, dancing to a favorite song or reading a story with your child.
