People come in all shapes(体型) and sizes. When you describe people, you talk about their height, weight, eye color, hair color and hair length. You can also describe the clothes that they're wearing.

Sometimes, when many people from one country have similar(相似的) features, people may think that everybody in that country looks the same. For example, all Germans are tall and have blue eyes, and people from Africa have dark skin and very curly hair. But such descriptions are not true. We should be careful about being too general(大概的) about people's appearances(外貌). For example, most Chinese people may be short, but what about Yao Ming? He isn't short at all.

【推荐3】Dr. Black put on a false smile as she entered Janet’s hospital room. She couldn’t let Janet see that she was worried. Yet she kept looking for the cause of Janet’s illness but didn’t find a reason.

“How are you feeling today?” Dr. Black asked her patient. Janet said that she felt about the same—terribly uncomfortable.

The doctor tried to get Janet’s mind off her health by talking about Janet’s vacation at Lake Winnow. But Dr. Black couldn’t keep her own mind on the conversation. She kept wondering what could be wrong with her patient.

Suddenly Janet’s words stopped Dr. Black’s thoughts, “…the vacation was really perfect, but the food was not good. The last meal I ate was especially terrible.”

Dr. Black quickly came back to the talk, “Janet, when did you eat that meal?” Janet said that it had been the day before yesterday.

“I think we’ve found your problems” Dr. Black said as she left. Several hours later, Dr. Black was back with the answer. “Janet, the food you ate made you ill. You’re suffering from: food poisoning. Now that we know what’s wrong, we can take care of your problem.”

【推荐1】A 15-year-old boy in Gaza has made power to light up his family’s tent, using two fans he found at a market. He and his family have lived in the tent since there was a war.

His neighbors in the tent camp called him “Gaza’s Newton” because of his great ability and bright mind. “Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head. And we here are living in darkness and bombs are falling on us, so I thought of creating light, and did so.” The boy said.

Since the boy’s family lived a hard life, they connected their tent to the side of a house so that the boy could climb onto the top of the house and set up his two fans to charge batteries (给电池充电). Then, the boy connected the fans to power lines that run down through the house and used on-off, lights and a thin piece of wood in the tent to create light for his family.

It took the boy some time to be successful finally after his first two tries failed. The boy was still very happy that he was able to make this because he could help his family and others like them. What’s more, he was also very glad that people in this camp called him “Gaza’s Newton”, because he hoped to become a scientist like Newton and create something that will be good for people of the whole world.

【推荐2】Ben, who was an excellent student at school, studied very hard. He got on well with all of his classmates and they all liked him so much. Unluckily, the poor boy’s father passed away because of a terrible accident two years ago, leaving Ben and his mother. Last Sunday afternoon, he went home from his school without saying anything. There would be a class meeting the next day. It was a rule that all the parents had to attend it. However, Ben didn’t want his mother to go to the meeting because she was a deaf-mute (聋哑人). The next day, forty-nine parents went into the classroom and sat on their children’s seats. Only Ben’s seat was empty. Ben was upset on the seat. Suddenly, “please show your mother to your seat, Ben.” the head teacher said. Ben’s mother made a gesture of “I’m sorry, I’m late” to others. “Please explain your mother’s words to us, Ben.” the head teacher said. So all the parents knew she was a deaf-mute. Then they all stood up from the seats and smiled to her in a friendly way.

Ben came to his mother and asked quietly, “Why do you come here, Mum?”

“Only because I love you,” the mother made a gesture and her face turned red like a shy girl.

There was a woman who inherited (继承) a clothing store after her sister passed away. The woman already had a job of her own, but she decided to run the store on weekends.

The first day she opened, an old woman came in and looked at things here and there. However, she didn’t buy anything. When the woman asked why, the old woman said, “Well, I like these things, but I don’t have enough money.”

“I already have a job. I can afford to give some clothes away,” the woman thought to herself. So she let the old woman have the clothes for free.

Word soon spread about the “free clothing store”. People started coming in. They told the woman that they didn’t have enough money. She would simply give them clothes. But one day, she went in to open the store and found that there was nothing left inside.

It’s a good thing to help others when they’re poor or in need. But we must also be careful. Not everyone is nice—some people will cheat others whenever they can. Use your best judgement to decide who really needs help.
