Ricky’s week started normally enough.
On Monday morning at breakfast time, while he was trying to read his computer game magazine, he had to listen to his sisters’ talk about boys.
“Steve is really good-looking,” said Jade.
“Good-looking? No, Hassa is good-looking...” said Sonia.
“No way!”
“And Ryan,” said Sonia, “and Tyler and Sam.”
“Sam has lovely hair,” agreed Jade. “And Tyler wears cool clothes.”
“Yeah, and Ryan is a good dancer,” added Sonia.
“You should learn to dance, Ricky,” said Jade. “Then you might get a girlfriend.”
Ricky blushed(脸红).
On Tuesday, Ricky spent the whole evening in his room working at his computer. He had his own website. On Tuesday his class always had maths homework and Ricky always helped out his schoolmates with their problems.
Ricky was always a bit of a hero on Wednesday. His friends went up to him and thanked him for his help with their homework.
“Hey, Ricky, you are brilliant.” said Josh.
“You are another Einstein!” said Alex.
Teachers liked Ricky, too, especially the maths and science ones. Whenever they asked questions, Ricky always seemed to know the answers.
Friday was a cold day. But everyone was happy as the weekend started.
Ricky turned up the collar(衣橱)of his jacket. It was only five o’clock, but it was already getting dark. He was walking home alone. It was strange. Ricky was popular with the boys in his class, but he wasn’t close friends with any of them.

I’m so happy to get your letter this morning. I want to tell you something about my life. I’m in London now. My mother is a doctor. My father works in a restaurant. They are busy every day. So I often stay at home and do my homework. Sometimes I go out to play basketball with my friends. I have many friends here. They are all kind to me. They often ask me to go to their homes. And sometimes I have dinner with them. They like Chinese food very much, so I often cook for them.
My English is not good, so I often speak English with them, and they help me a lot. They like to learn Chinese, too. So I often teach them Chinese. Jane is my favorite friend here. She can speak Chinese very well now. It’s very nice to be here with them. Are you happy in China now? Please tell me about you soon
Yours,
Li Han

The girl stopped and looked into his face. “Go away, Mr. Thomas Sawyer. I will never speak to you again.”
Then she started walking again. Tom was so surprised that he could think of nothing to say. And he was filled with anger. If she were a boy, he knew that he would fight her.
Becky was also full of anger. She was thinking of the pleasure of watching the teacher beat Tom for destroying his spelling book. She knew someone else, not Tom, did it.
She did not know that she would soon have trouble!
The teacher, Mr. Bobbins often took a mysterious book out of his desk and read it. He would never allow anybody to touch it. Out of curiosity, Becky managed to get it and found a beautiful colored picture of a human figure in it. Just then, Tom came into the room. Becky moved the book away tearing the picture page down the middle. She put the book back into the desk, and started crying.
After an hour, Mr. Bobbins unlocked his desk and took out his favorite book. Becky looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment Mr. Bobbins faced the children. There was a long silence, then he shouted:
“Who tore this book?” Nobody answered. The teacher searched their faces.
“Benjamin, did you do it?” Benjamin shook his head, “Amy Lawrence?” Also a shake of the head.
Becky was the next. Tom looked at Becky and saw that she was almost crying because she was so scared. “Becky, look at my face. Did you tear this book?” Tom jumped to his feet and shouted, “I did!”
When he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks and the love that came from Becky’s eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. That night, he fell asleep with Becky’s words in his ears, “You are so great.”

Wang Yaping is the first female taikonaut (中国宇航员) to work in China’s Tiangong space station as well as the first Chinese woman to perform a spacewalk.
Wang’s dream of becoming the first female astronaut was inspired (鼓舞) by Yang Liwei’s 2003 space flight, which was China’s first manned space mission. “Now China has its first man in space, when will our country have its first woman,” thought Wang.
Born in a small village in Yantai, Shandong Province in 1980, Wang had been an intelligent long-distance runner since primary school, and competed in local sports meetings. In 1997, Wang, a high school student, was encouraged to apply for the pilot training program because she was good at sports and didn’t wear glasses. Given her strong ability to stay calm, Wang passed all tests as well as physical examinations and became part of the seventh batch of female pilots in China. After four years of education and training, Wang finally learned to fly four different types of aircraft before graduation. She got the top level at the end of 2011. However, Liu Yang, instead of Wang, was chosen for the historic mission of becoming China’s first woman in space in June 2012. Wang was disappointed because it was her dream as well. But she told Liu, “We are proud of you and both of our dreams come true when you make it.”
In 2020, a team of Chinese university students translated cosmic rays (宇宙射线) into music. They said the project was inspired by Wang’s live space speech, when they were teenagers. Wang has given a second lecture in the space station, encouraging young people to achieve their space dreams.

“The results were very exciting and very surprising,” said researcher Attila Andics, from Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest.
For the study, the researchers first trained 13 dogs for months. The dogs had to sit quietly inside machines, so that the researchers could check their brain activity.
Then the researchers put headphones on dogs and played people’s voices to them. There were four different voices. Some were positive(积极的)words, such as “well done”, or neutral(不带感情色彩的)words like “however”. The words were also in different tones(音调). Some were positive and some were neutral.
Brain scans(扫描)showed that the dogs could recognize words, as well as the tone of words, much like people do. The positive words with a positive tone brought the stronger activity in their brain’s reward centers(反应中枢).
“It shows that for dogs, a nice phrase can work very well as a prize, but it works best if both words and tones match,” said Andics.
They also found that dogs deal with meaningful words with the left side of the brain and the tones with the right. Human brains work in the same way.
“It gave us a new understanding of language,” said Andics. “That is, not only do humans understand the meaning in words, other species(物种)do too.”

Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won’t help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman eyesight.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia(近视)can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there’s a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it’s down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white?
Color blindness doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells (视锥细胞) that sense different wavelengths (波长) of light. If these cells don’t work properly, color blindness occurs.
There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light.
However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.

Earth Day is on April 22nd every year. Earth Day is a day to remember to take care of our planet, Earth. We can take care of our planet by keeping it clean.
We can keep Earth clean by following the rule of “reduce, reuse, recycle”. Reduce means use less. We can reduce our use of things like water or gasoline. Reuse means use again, rather than throw things away. We can reuse many things, such as plastic bags and boxes. Recycle means to make something new from something old. We can keep Earth clean by recycling materials such as paper, wood and plastic. If we take these materials to a recycling center, they can be used again in a different way.
On Earth Day, we remind ourselves and everyone on Earth that we must do these things. We must do these things every day, not just on Earth Day. We must all do our part, and we can make a difference. On April 22nd, remind everyone you know that every day is Earth Day!
