In the American West, cowboys had to take care of the cattle. They had to watch them all day and night because the cattle were nervous and sometimes ran away. A cowboy's life was lonely and dangerous. When he was alone in the desert with the cattle, he drank strong coffee with lots of caffeine to stay awake at night. He also sang music to the cattle to make them quiet. He sang about the stars and the moon, about his family and his friends. The cattle listened to the cowboy and went to sleep. They did not run away if he sang beautiful and peaceful music.
In the American South, many people came from Ireland, Scotland, and England. Other people came from France and Canada. They enjoyed their own kind of music. They used guitars, violins and harmonicas, too. They also added instruments from their homes, like bottles and spoons. When they visited their friends and families on holidays like Thanksgiving Day, they usually sang and played country music.
Country music describes life. It talks about love, jobs, home and money. It talks about friends and enemies, trucks and highways, farms and crops. People in many parts of the world like country music because everyone knows something about these ideas. Also, many country music fans wear Western clothes and dance together to country music. Sometimes a woman dances alone and sometimes she dances with a man. The woman always wears a long colorful dress. She moves her arms and hands slowly, but her feet move fast, difficult steps. The man often wears black. Both dancers click (点击) their shoes on the floor when they dance around each other.
Cossack dances are from Russia. They are full of energy. Some are more like gymnastics than dancing! Dancers have to be very thin because they jump very high and kick their legs up and down. They often jump over swords (剑). The movements are similar to Chinese Kungfu.
Limbo dancing is an important part of celebrations in America. Young people have to dance under a pole (杆). The pole is often on fire and the dancer mustn’t touch it. After a successful “limbo”, they put the polo lower and do it again. Some dancers even can dance under a pole just twenty centimeters off the ground.
Mask (面具) dances are important for the Dogon people in West Africa. Each village makes different masks. They are often huge and colorful. The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting(做实验) and working with shade plantings. He says, “The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees(橡树) can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours’ direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours’ full sun a day, it also shows how plants and tree roots(树根) can share nutrients(养分) and water. Mr. Hoffman also planted asparagus(芦笋) around a tree. When it rains, all the rain from the leaves of the tree drops down right on the asparagus.
Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem with leaf hoppers. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide(杀虫剂). Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Leaf hoppers dislike shade, and the hottest part day is when they do the worst of their damage(破坏).
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sunlight falls or does not fall on plants. People who are interested in shade planting should also consider different conditions which planting vegetables in the shade.
