Hundreds of years ago, many people thought birds were holy(神圣的).They believed birds were messengers(信使)of God.Birds’ songs meant peace and joy.Birds’ bright and colourful feathers(羽毛) meant beauty and happiness to people.

He beat other competitors, including a master’s degree(硕士学位) graduate from Beijing University, in the third season of the Chinese Poetry Conference on CCTV on April 4, 2018.
“My interest in ancient poems began as early as I was six years old. My father hoped I would grow up to be a man who keeps the mountains, rivers, lakes and seas in mind,” the courier said.
In 2001, the younger Lei found a job in Shanghai and began to read books related to ancient poems at bookstores or libraries in his spare time, since he didn’t make much money. The young man also developed a habit of reciting poems he liked and writing them down after returning home.
Though Lei works as a fast food courier in Hangzhou later, his love for poems never died. Even on his busiest work days, he used any available moment to recite poems. “For
example, I am used to reciting poems when I wait for food at restaurants, and traffic lights
on my way to deliver food. Reciting poems not only enriches my knowledge, but also
makes my job less boring. As for my future plan, I will stick to reading and reciting
poems,” Lei said.

The expression “a red-letter day”is often heard in daily life. “A red-letter day” is a day that people are especially happy. It may be a day that you have waited for a long time, a wedding day, for example. Or it may be a day with a happy surprise. The red-carpet welcome includes a lot of cheering by thousands of fans, a parade, music and speech of praise by local statesmen.

In English there are many words to show your politeness; the use of “sir” and “madam” is not an important one. These words are used far more rarely than we think. In Britain, it is unusual for someone in the street to say “Excuse me, sir.(2) Can you tell me the way to the station?” The people who use the word “sir” in this way are usually expecting some money for a service—a taxi or a waiter. For example, “That will be $12,sir.Thank you!”
The word “please” is used everywhere in Britain.(3) Many visitors don’t know when to use “please”. When they go into a cafe they say “A coffee.” or “I want a coffee.” or even “Can I have a coffee?”(That might be really alright in their own languages).However,(4) it seems that they are impolite! Just adding a simple “please” would make it better —“A coffee ,please.” or “I would like a coffee, please.” It is better and safer to always use “please”!
Let’s look at polite ways of asking questions. Instead of a direct question we often use “Can you” and “Could you” before we say what we want .Look at these examples, which are from a normal conversation at home between husband and wife: “Can you park your car over there, please?” “Could you move the table against the wall, please?”
“Could...?” is a little more polite than “Can...?”,but both questions contain the word “please”.
If you are not a native English speaker ,then to use “Can...?” and “Could...?”to express a request is wise. In fact, you can be even more polite: “Sorry, could you tell me the way to Oxford Street, please?” “Sorry, could you tell me your name again, please?” (5) it’s, with, the, word, request, very, common, to, start, a, “sorry”.
If you ask for help, try “I’m sorry to bother you, but could you help me, please?” You might say to a friend “Hey John, lend me $100,will you?” But you couldn’t say this to somebody you do not know well.

Tape-Measure Murder is a short story by Agatha Christie. In the story, Miss Polit, the dressmaker, finds that Mrs. Spenlow is dead in her house in a small village called St. Mary Mead. Everybody, including the police, thinks that Mr. Spenlow is the murderer (凶手) because he is so calm and quiet after discovering his wife’s death. But after the police talk to Miss Marple, she finds out the real murderer.
The best part of the story is when Miss Marple explains how she solves the mystery by noticing a tiny pin (别针) on a policeman’s uniform. Her explanation is very clear and clever. Miss Marple is my favorite character in the story. I think she is very special because she is just an old lady but she is even smarter than the policemen. I never thought that an old lady could be the main character of a detective (侦探) story!
Can you guess who the murderer is? Read the book to find out! You will enjoy the story very much because the ending is so surprising.
