What happens to a teenage kid when the world he thought he knew suddenly changes? Find out in Little Brother by American author Cory Doctorow. It is a fascinating book for a new generation of science fiction readers.
Marcus Yallow, 17, from San Francisco is much more comfortable in front of a computer than obeying the rules of society. Smart, fast and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school's monitoring(监控) system. This way he and his friends get to head off to play a popular online game in real life.
While they are playing, a bomb explodes on the Bay Bridge. Marcus stops a military vehicle to get help for his injured friend, but this simple act throws him into a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secret prison. There he is treated as a possible terrorist. He is eventually let go after four days, but his injured friend disappears.
When he returns, Marcus discovers that there are many “security measures” in place and that now all citizens are treated like potential terrorists. While some consider this government action necessary for public safety, Marcus sees this as a complete destruction of the rights he is supposed to have as a citizen.
He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him with only one thing to do: to take down the DHS (数字处理系统) himself. He helps organize a large network called Xnet to spread the truth, anonymously (匿名地).
The book presents a young man who is irresponsible, but learns about himself, and grows, in the course of the story. As part of this learning and growing he becomes aware of very serious issues about his society.

To encourage reading, a Chinese company started the book-sharing activity. They put over 10,000 books around the underground, in taxis and on planes in Beijing. Since the activity started, it has earned the support of many people, even some popular stars. The book-sharing activity, however, drew much more criticism (批评) than praise because some books were left untouched, some books were taken away by cleaners. People also complained that they couldn’t reach the books—the underground was too crowded.

They teach you how to deal with problems in your life—for example, how to get along with your classmates or co-workers, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness.
Paul Sweetman, the owner of City Books in the UK, said the current political climate might be one reason why more people are reading self-help books. During the past few years, the world has seen terrorist attacks, trade wars and women’s rights movements, such as MeToo.
“People come into the shop and they’re really tired about things. They’re looking for reassurance and peace of mind,” Sweetman told The Guardian.
In addition, younger readers—such as millennials or people born after the 1980s—tend to be more aware of their own faults, according to the US psychologist Caroline Beaton. This means they’re more likely to try to improve themselves by reading self-help books.
“Self-help books used to be something people laughed at. Many people didn’t take ‘chicken soup’ stories or ‘success theory’ books seriously. But now they’re more respected and as good to read as any novel,” Sweetman said.
Whatever the reason for the growing interest in self-help books might be, it’s good to know that help is at hand if we need it. But are these books really helpful? Read one and find out.

The rock is popularly known as“Krishna's Butter Ball,” which means a favorite food, butter, fallen from the sky. The rock is 20 feet high and five meters in diameter(直径), and weighs over 250 tons. It 1ooks like it might slip(滑落) any moment and run down the hill, but it has stayed that way for several centuries now
Some say the rock is a natural formation(形成), but scientists think that's impossible because natural corrosion(腐蚀) couldn't produce such an unusual shape. Others, think that the rock might have been placed there by Gods from the sky, or the aliens who visited Earth thousands of years ago.
One of the earliest known attempts(尝试) to move the rock was made by Narasimhavarman, a Pallava king who ruled Southern India from 630 to 668 C. E. The strongest of his men could not move it at all. More recently, in 1908, Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley decided that he wanted to get rid of(除掉) the rock, fearing that it would slide down the hill. He used seven elephants to do the task, but much to his surprise, it did not budge.
Krishna's Butter Ball is now a popular tourist spot, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Visitors make their own attempt to move the rock-they fail, of course, but always come away with amazing photos!

It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, for example, you can use stairways, roofs and fire escapes, but no lifts. From the lower floors of buildings, to escape through windows is possible. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. It is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful while you are waiting for help.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe in earthquakes. Stay inside and cover. Duck and get under a desk or table, or stand in a corner or under a doorway. Cover your head and neck with your arms. A study in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings says that owning a pet, especially a dog, may help keep your heart healthy.
The researchers compared dog owners with everyone else and found that no matter what their age, sex or education level, they benefited (受益) the most in terms of cardiovascular (心血管的) health. The findings has also shown that dog ownership leads to more physical (身体的) activity. ▲ People who walk dogs enjoy an average of half an hour more physical activity a day than those who don’t have a dog. What’s more, owning a pet in general reduces (减少) stress. A dog or cat coming up to you may bring a smile to your face. In addition, the pet ownership makes us more social. Almost 90% of pet owners said that having an animal brings joy to their life and helps them to feel loved. Two-thirds feel their pets connect them to other people, whether it’s meeting neighbors while walking a dog or having something in common to talk about with other cat or bird owners.
Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, one of the lead researchers on the team, said what makes this study so meaningful is that it showed the benefits of having a dog not only just increased physical activity. The study included many factors (因素) that influenced the health of the heart and arteries (动脉), for example, pet-owners have a healthier diet than people who don’t keep a pet — thus contributing to a better cardiovascular health.

What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed(展示)at the entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is provided as an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.
When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

A.The sport goods company once found an 80 percent increase in purchase. |
B.For stores in Paris, the smell is more important than the window displays. |
C.Both the E-commerce and the real stores focus on the attractiveness of goods. |
D.Many famous stores nowadays are trying hard to find the ideal scent. |
