Have you ever tried durian? It is said to be delicious, but you probably have never seen a durian-scented (榴莲味的) candle. That’s because the fruit smells. And for this reason, some people dislike durian.
But Vincent Gomes of the University of Sydney has a strong interest in durian. In his eyes, durian is more than a fruit. He and his workmates have discovered something amazing about it. They found that durian was a natural super-capacitor (超级电容器).
Super-capacitors, just like batteries (电池), are used to store energy. But compared to the batteries we use today, they have a few advantages. They can store a much larger amount of energy. They can be recharged (再充电) much more quickly. And most importantly, they have a much longer lifespan. The lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries in our smartphones depend on chemicals to produce electricity. When the chemicals are used up, the batteries become harmful waste. This has caused serious pollution problems. Scientists have been trying to invent better batteries for years.
Although super-capacitors have many advantages, they haven’t been widely used yet. The traditional materials used to make them are expensive. Durian, in comparison, is much cheaper. It has given scientists hope.
Gomes and his workmates have worked out a way to turn cores (果核) from durian into super-capacitors. But there are still many tech problems left for them to solve. Perhaps by the end of this decade, durian batteries will have hit the market. Just hope they won’t be very smelly—we will need to use them in many places, from our cars to our phones!

Eleven and Twelve
The number “eleven” comes from the German word — “ainlif”, which means “oneleft” in English. Twelve follows the same rule. It comes from “twalif” — “two left”. Why did people use “teen” instead of “lif” from 13 to 19? We still don’t know.
42.195 Kilometres in a Marathon (马拉松)
The story began with an ancient Greek soldier Pheidippides. Once his country won a big war and he carried the good news from Marathon to Athens. He ran so fast that he died after telling people the news. To memorize Pheidippides, people held the first modern marathon in the first Olympic Games in 1896. It was about 40 km from Marathon to Athens. But race organizers for the 1908 Olympic Games in London wanted to add something special. The race began at Windsor Castle and ended at White City Stadium. It was 42.195 kilometres long. And since 1924 the number 42.195 has been kept in marathon.
28 Days in February
Before the calendar we use today, one of the first Roman calendars had only 304 days and ten months (March through December), with six months of 30 days and four of 31 days. The second king of Rome changed the old calendar. He added 50 days for January and February. To make the new months longer, he took one day from each of the 30-day months, and then made 56 days to divide between January and February (28 days each). Later January was given one more day to add up to 355 days a year.

Upcycling is the process of changing old materials into something useful and often beautiful.
So, is it the same as recycling? No. Recycling takes materials -paper or glass-and breaks them down so their base materials can be reused to make a new product. When you upcycle an item, you are not breaking down the material, you are simply refashioning it. For example, you might make shoes out of old tyres. Also, the upcycled item is typically of the same, or even better, quality than the original(原来的).
Upcycling isn't a new idea. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the 1930s to 1940s when families didn't have enough materials. In those days, things were repurposed over and over until there were no longer useful. For example, an old door can be changed into a new dining table. Saving is still a trend(趋势)today and a big reason why more and more people upcycle. But an even bigger reason for the rebirth of upcycling is its good influence on the environment.
Upcycling is green. The plain and simple fact of the matter is that upcycling is much better for the planet than throwing things away. When you upcycle, that's one item less that ends up on the waste mountain. Upcycling is also considerably more environmentally friendly than recycling, which needs energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling just needs your own creativity and effort. For example, Grace Robinson, from the UK, takes used tea bags and turns them into dresses, shoes and even hats.
There are two ways to support the upcycling movement. Sort through your recycling bins and create items yourself, or buy ready-made items from upcycled materials. Both ways do good to the environment and in returm, you get something that's both attractive and practical.

“Excuse me.” I said.
He replied with a smile and said, “Please excuse me, too. I didn’t notice you.”
We apologized(道歉) and went for our own ways.
Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too near. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked her over. “Move out of the way!” I shouted.
She walked away sadly. But I didn’t feel like I had to apologize to her.
While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me. “While dealing with a stranger, you were polite. But with a daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You will find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?”
I quietly went and sat down by my daughter’s bed.
“Honey, I am so sorry.” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked for me?”
She said, “I found them by the tree. I picked them because they’re pretty like you. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue ones.”
I tearfully replied, “Sweetie, I’m really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn’t have shouted at you.”

He realized that the dog beside him had been dead for years and so had his horse. He wondered what was happening, and where the road was leading them.
After a while, they saw a tall arch topped by golden letter "H" and a gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl. The street that led to the gate looked like gold.
He rode toward the gate and saw a man at a desk. Thirsty and tired out by his journey, he called out," Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the cowboy asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water for you."
"Can I bring my partners, too?"
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding, his dog running by his side.
After another long ride, he came to a dirt road leading through a gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he went closer to the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. “Excuse me,” he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"
"Sure, there's a pump right over there. Help yourself."
"How about my friends here?" the cowboy pointed at the dog and his horse.
"Of course! They look thirsty, too," said the man.
The three went through the gate and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets(水桶)beside it. The cowboy took a long drink, as did his horse and dog. "What do you call this place?" the cowboy asked the man who was still standing by the tree.
"This is Heaven," he answered.
"That's strange," the cowboy said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the shinning, gold street and fake pearly gates? That's Hell." "Doesn't it make you angry when they use your name like that?"
"Not at all. Actually, we’re happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Four years has nearly passed, I am now 21 years old, just two months from graduating from college. Once again, I have reached a critical juncture (紧要关头) in my life where I am going to be alone in a new way.
In four years, I have experienced a lot, happy time, sad moment and ordinary days. How grateful I am for the ones who have shown me the way and taught me to be strong when I felt hopeless. How lucky I am to know that I have a home to return to, a home where chaos (混乱) and arguments may occur, but where I still feel safe. A place where I am loved unconditionally, regardless of my mistakes.
Tomorrow, my mother turns 50. It is because of my mother that I’ve learned to love myself, to respect myself, and above all, to be a good person. It is because of her that even throughout all of my hardships and struggles, I have known that giving up is not and will not ever be a choice. It is because of her that I have truly learned the lesson that age is only a number, and what matters is your spirit and character.
My mother and I have sometimes clashed (冲突) head. She is the strongest person I know, the person who I disagree most. She has told me that I am the only person that is responsible for my life. But today I have to tell her that she has been wrong.
She doesn’t realize that there is another person who will never leave me. There’s another person who will always there for me and who will love me forever. That person is her. She is the first person I will call when I am sad, in trouble, or feeling blue. She will never lie to me to spare my feelings (不使我伤心).
I have come so far these fast four years. I still have a long life to live. A life that I hope will be full of adventure, success, and happiness. Although my mum was right when telling me that I am the only one responsible for what happens in my life. Mom, you’ve helped me so far. You are my hero. One day I hope to be like you.
