Subject | New Hobby Ideas |
Dear Karry, Last time you told me that you didn't know what to do in the free time. Here I would like to tell you some new hobby ideas. Art. Adding hobbies about art to your life can help relax yourself after study. There are many art hobbies to start with, such as painting, model building, or postcard making. You can join a class to learn some skills(技能). . Playing an instrument or learning a kind of dance can also be good ideas. And there are lots of instruments that you can learn, such as guitar, piano, and so on. For dancing, you can ask the school teachers for advice(建议)to find out what kind of dance fit(适合)you most. Team sports. One good thing of a new hobby is meeting new people and making friends. So how about joining a team? You can play football, basketball, tennis, table tennis or volleyball. There might be more in the sport center. You can even start a group through your class and encourage other classmates to play together. Do you want to try any of these hobbies? Go ahead! I'm sure you will have fun. Best wishes, Lily |

Nadia Comaneci, a famous gymnast(体操运动员), was born in Romania in 1961.
When she was doing cartwheels(侧手翻)on the playground at the age of 7, a PE teacher saw her. He told her family that she was very good and advised Nadia to train in the capital of Romania. Although it was a long way from her home, Nadia went because she loved gymnastics(体操).
After that, she trained hard and took part in lots of competitions. In 1975, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th Century.

Emailing people is not easy. When you don’t know them, it is difficult to find a polite (礼貌的) way to address (称呼) them. Here are some ideas.
Think about the question: Is he or she a friend or a teacher? That may help you. For friends, “Hi…” or “Hello…” is OK. For teachers, it’s different (不同的). If you’re new to the teacher, it is good to use “Dear Mrs. …” or “Hello Mr. …”. It’s always a good idea to say who you are and why you email them. Start with, “My name is…and I go to… (name of your school).” This helps them know you. Then tell them: “I have questions about…”.
Keep your email short and clear (清晰). And remember to be polite! “Please” and “Thank you” can go a long way.
Emailing is different from doing WeChat. Read your email aloud before you send (发送) it. Make sure of your spellings. You need to spell the names right!

Keiko is a killer whale, film star in the film Free Willy in 1993. Now it’s time for Keiko to go back to the open seas, after 20 years in zoos.
In the film Free Willy, two men want to kill the whale in a Japanese zoo, because they want to sell it for money. But a young boy helps the whale to run away.
At the beginning of the film, Keiko was in a zoo in Mexico(墨西哥), and wasn’t at all happy. The tank(水槽) was too small and the water was too warm.
In 1996 Keiko moved to a better zoo in Oregon, USA. The zoo-keeper built a very large water tank for him. Many young people and their families went to the zoo to visit him.
In 1998, people took Keiko to Iceland(冰岛) by air. It wasn’t an easy trip. Keiko is heavy, about 4.5 tons. What will happen now? For some months Keiko will stay in the sea. It must learn to catch fish and get strong. It must also learn to keep away from boats.
Maybe in a year or two, if all goes well, people will open the gates and Keiko will be free, really free.

Tuesday, Jan. 6, 9: 50 p.m. We are sitting in our warm living room; the TV is running; everything is peaceful. Our back yard is brightly lit(照亮的), as if somebody turns on floodlights! Suddenly the light goes out. Then everything goes black. We find the flashlight and some candles and go to bed. |
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 7: 30 a m. My first thought after waking up is that it is very cold in the bedroom. Clearly, the power has not come back on. After I look out of the window, I feel even more depressed because it is still raining heavily. The temperature in the house has gone down to 10 degrees. Although that isn’t too bad, we have no idea when the power will come back on. So Ron lights a fire in the fireplace. |
Thursday, Jan 8, 12: 30 p. m. It has started to snow. The poor trees, which are already bent(弯曲的)under the ice, now have to carry the weight of snow. Ron comes back home, as there is no power in his office. What’s more, the storm is supposed to last until Saturday morning. |
Friday, Jan 9, 6: 00 p. m. Still no power. Even though we have lit a series of candles, it is difficult to do anything in their weak light. I am sitting beside several candles, but I am having trouble reading. |
Saturday, Jan. 10, 1: 00 p. m I take the car to go on a search for a store. The destruction along the roads is sad: everywhere, trees have been broken and the traffic light is out of order. I buy something like bread, some fruit, more drinking water and cat food. |

"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones?
Dutch company WeTransfer conducted (进行) a survey of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of the participants have creative jobs. They are writers, musicians, photographers, and podcasters (播客博主). The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.
"It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor in chief.
If we give people enough time and space to think properly (适当地), they will come up with better ideas, Alderson added. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.
However, most companies fail to give their employees (员工) a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity, according to the survey. More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier (障碍) to good thinking.
Spending time alone to think will help you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is important when you're making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in We Transfer's survey say they trust their own instincts (直觉) and research when they consider an idea.
1. What was the result of the survey?A.Brainstorming is needed to solve creative problems. |
